the new one was better, And they made willi look bad. Because it was made in 1949 and we were fighting communism. But, if anyone readthe book, rthey would realize that he was a populist.
For pity's sake, don't waste time with the Penn version. Robert Rosson's original (1949) is probably the best "political film" ever made in the U.S. Crawford won an Oscar for Best Actor and Mercedes McCambridge won one for Best Supporting Actress. It was nominated for Best Picture; I think it won that award, but need to verify. We need a little of the Willie Stark/Huey Long philosophy today: "...soak the big boys and spread it out thin."
I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book, but I've seen neither of film version. Which one would people recommend? And should I avoid either of them? :-)
Now we just need a modern day Huey to pull Congress and President Obama to the left like Long did with FDR.
"How many men ever been to a barbecue and would let one man take off the table what's intended for nine tenths of the people to eat? The only way you'll ever feed the balance of the people is to make that man come back here and bring back some of that grub he ain't got no business with."
I thought the one in '06 was the only one. Like Scarface, I thought that was the only one, untill I watched the special features and there was one in 193 something. (I think.)
No idea why that would be. Sean Penn's politics have consistently aligned with the little guy - the disenfranchised, the downtrodden... if you can't see a connection with the populist message of Willie Stark then your politics are blinding you.
Guess for some people "self-righteous" means anyone who feels strongly about something that you're against.
Sean Penn re-made this ha ha he could not shine Crawford's shoes.

I adore...

Sean Penn was trying way too hard to fit this willie stark. Broderick Crawford's performance, however, is balanced perfectly.

Sean Penn has never forgiven Hollywood for black
listing his commie father. For the most part they should black list him also. But they are all so far to the left out
there that it would make no difference.

Hey, I didn't know that there was one in '49!

I didn't say anything about Sean Penn's politics, I agree with a lot of them. I just said that he is a self-righteous douche (which he is.)
