Romans 7 is about the current state of struggle that Paul has. It is not about Paul prior to his conversion, nor is it a hypothetical unbeliever. The unrepentant sinner does not "delight in the Law" and so would not have a struggle between the flesh and the spirit. This was laid out in Rom. 1-3. Paul as a Pharisee called himself "faultless" (Phil 3) and would not have had a struggle with sin because he believed he was justified by his keeping the law.
Jesse, concerning original sin, I am curious as to how you see God's words of promise to Noah in Gen. 8: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood." The Hebrew for childhood is Na`uwr, which refers to the time between infancy and adolescence. Do you think God exaggerates the situation? Or do you think that every infant survived the flood because they were innocent? Tough problem requires a tougher savior.
Correct, it is a free will choice but we have inherited a sin nature from Adam. A baby is not innocent. Here's why: You don't have to teach a baby or a child to be bad. You have to teach them to be good. I'm right. You're wrong. That was easy.
So when Paul said that we are to confess our sins daily, he meant everyone but JesseMorrell because JesseMorrell doesn't sin, right?
Positionally we are declared righteous (by Christ's work) but in practice, we still sin.
Are you saying you don't sin every day in thought word and deed? Finney didn't believe in original sin. And that's just one of his many problems. Do you believe in original sin, Jesse?
You couldn't be any more wrong. Finney IS the heretic. We need less like him. Today's church in general is a result of Finney and clearly the modern church has a major problem.
This is great. I highly recomend God of Promise and Putting amazing back into grace. I love Horton's stuff. The Gospel the Great Rescue Mission. and not the "How to Gospel" of much of the American Religion.
Charles Finney was the Arch-heretic whose teachings had been contaminating the biblical gospel. That is why the evangelical church looks more like PELAGIUS thanks to influence in this country. I hope evangelicals wake up and begin to call that false gospel by what it is: A FALSE GOSPEL THAT SENDS PEOPLE TO HELL.
This is indicitive of the kind of solid teaching that comes out of Westminster Seminary in California, one of my pastors is a graduate from there and his teaching is incredibly gospel centered.
I hope to someday go to a church like that. I'm presently attending a Wesleyan church (because of my new wife) and it's just so appalingly man-centered. Thank God for the White Horse Inn!
I pray for an increased in Preachers & Teachers the likes of John MacArthur, John Piper, Paul Washer, Jeff Norblit, Eugene Peterson, more I pray more to fill the planet to bring the TRUE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
Give us more!!!!

Can you imagine if this was the typical pastor. Theologically committed, historically informed, biblically literate, etc.?
