There's such a thing as being too perfect, in my opinion. And compared to any wind instrument, Violin is simply not the same kind of expression that I appreciate in music. A violin doesn't sound like a human emotion, it's always so vibrato! Must it be so?
Dudi and Bell make me see, all over again, that music is a special gift musicians share with us all. Pyschologists say no one gets to "perfect" in this life unless you fudge on definitions and illusions. What we can get to is the vacinity of perfect through striving and aspiration and open commitment to an ideal.

It is really sad to read some of the comments that, instead of offering a knowledgeable insight or a greatful recognition, indulge in character assasination. Mr. Bell might or might not be my favorite violinist, might or might not be better or worse than X, Y or Z, but he is a solid name in the concert landscape and has way more merit of his own than most of us postin here, therefore deserving NOT unquestioning worshipìng (nobody does!) but WELL grounded, responsible criticism.
I'm not a fan of Bell but intonation is a bad comment to make, especially when using perlman as example... he needed a lot of cuts and takes in his recordings for pitch stuff.
Excuse me.....This fellow is one of my absolute favorite players...if you would listen inbetween the notes...im so sorry for you...Dudamel Venecuela Bell ..a superbe Project....Bell is able to colour out everything with his instrument...he is a sound genius......and NOT always perfect in Tune...Nobody is always perfect in Tune...you have no Idea whats goin on Men....
Who cares if Bell is gay or not LOL, just try to enjoy the music. Actually most gays who are in the music business are better than the straight ones. I can care less who they sleep with, as long as I enjoy their music. Very well played by Joshua but if they played this in better audio surroundings like in a church or cathedral or a dome setting the sound of his violin would have been amplified by an appropriate building designed to create either a surround or magnified sound then it would have done better justice for his amazing ability to play the violin.

The music is so beautifully played, it made me want to cry with the emotion Joshua brings across. I'm far from being an expert (as most people) so I don't hear any intonation problems. I just enjoy the passion expressed in the music.
you obviously have never played in an orchestra. The conductor is integral at keeping it all together, just like a coach on a sports team. The orchestra is only going to be as good as the conductor.
That is very true. I have never been really into classical music but a month ago, I watched this Japanese Drama series about this guy who wanted to be a conductor, and that series really changed my perspective. Though I'm no expert, I think Gustavo Dudamel does an excellent job bringing life into the music =)
this is the music piece that made me want to play the violin when I was a child. It is soooooo awesome. Alas, no kid in the projects has money for a violin when their mama needs dope.

Ernesto, in addition, I saw Joshua Bell live in performance on February 2, 2008. I never had to cringe once with intonationn problems then! His performance was a passionate and electrifying rendition of the Barber Violin Concerto. He did more than just "play notes." I am also very excited about Dudamel coming to this country. I hope to see him live someday, as well.

I also look forward to hear and see Dudamel (a lot to see). I did learn about him yesterday in "60 minutes". What I'm particularly impressed with is "El Systema". The Venezuelans seem to be doing one thing right!

As a violinist and orchestra director, I can tell you that those who are critical of either Joshua's or the orchestra's intonation are probably hearing the distortion caused by the recording. YouTube is hardly high fidelity:) In addition, conductors and soloists must have constant eye contact....I do not see Dudamel actually cueing Joshua per se. These men are both top-notch musicians; the best in their league. And, okay, I admit I have a shameless crush on both of them :)
I really don't see how youtube's sound can cause the intonation problems with Joshua. (I don't hear bad intonation by the orchestra) Low sampling rate may reduce bandwidth and affect the harmonic content, but not the pitch in tones of any length.
But it's OK to have a crush on them. (I'm not so sure if they would have in turn a crush on an Elaine.)
To be honest, my video stopped and started so many times, it was difficult to get a consistent sampling by either Joshua or the orchestra, but I was able to hear the section I believe to be suspect and it sounded to me more as if it was the quality of the recording. As far as either of them returning the crush, that would be mortifying. Millions of women have a crush on these two--young and old alike. Besides, I'm a happily married mother of two. I highly doubt my husband would approve!
I bet any of those young first chair violinists would sound more interesting and play with a more substantial tone.....

As for the intonation-there are a few notes off, but hardly. I find it to be gorgeous.

The music is so beautifully played, it made me want to cry with the emotion Joshua brings across. I'm far from being an expert (as most people) so I don't hear any intonation problems. I just enjoy the passion expressed in the music.

you obviously have never played in an orchestra. The conductor is integral at keeping it all together, just like a coach on a sports team. The orchestra is only going to be as good as the conductor.

That is very true. I have never been really into classical music but a month ago, I watched this Japanese Drama series about this guy who wanted to be a conductor, and that series really changed my perspective. Though I'm no expert, I think Gustavo Dudamel does an excellent job bringing life into the music =)

Ernesto, in addition, I saw Joshua Bell live in performance on February 2, 2008. I never had to cringe once with intonationn problems then! His performance was a passionate and electrifying rendition of the Barber Violin Concerto. He did more than just "play notes." I am also very excited about Dudamel coming to this country. I hope to see him live someday, as well.

As a violinist and orchestra director, I can tell you that those who are critical of either Joshua's or the orchestra's intonation are probably hearing the distortion caused by the recording. YouTube is hardly high fidelity:) In addition, conductors and soloists must have constant eye contact....I do not see Dudamel actually cueing Joshua per se. These men are both top-notch musicians; the best in their league. And, okay, I admit I have a shameless crush on both of them :)

I really don't see how youtube's sound can cause the intonation problems with Joshua. (I don't hear bad intonation by the orchestra) Low sampling rate may reduce bandwidth and affect the harmonic content, but not the pitch in tones of any length.
But it's OK to have a crush on them. (I'm not so sure if they would have in turn a crush on an Elaine.)

To be honest, my video stopped and started so many times, it was difficult to get a consistent sampling by either Joshua or the orchestra, but I was able to hear the section I believe to be suspect and it sounded to me more as if it was the quality of the recording. As far as either of them returning the crush, that would be mortifying. Millions of women have a crush on these two--young and old alike. Besides, I'm a happily married mother of two. I highly doubt my husband would approve!
