Delta is so crazy they don't show the map on the 747 as much. This is why I like having my own individual TV. Delta just shows their dumb ads as opposed to the map on my last 12 hour international flight the map was on for 1 hour if not less.
I was in an ultra long haul flight too flying from LAX to Bangkok last december aboard Thai airways..... A whopping 17.5hrs in the air and it went along the great circle route too.... I just love long haul flights!!
took this flight in Mar 2010. Then went on to Guangzhou. Loved the flight and the food was above expectations. It's amazing the sights you can see during 17 hrs plus. Glad CO kept the paint scheme and livery.
@hdsfs Again, as stated before (someone else asked something along the lines of this earlier), they used a northern route on this leg, a southern route would only be used if there was a favorable tailwind, otherwise you're going to route as close as possible along a great-circle track to get there (shortest distance on a flat map).
@doubl609 This route is now operated by United Airlines after the merger with Continental Airlines and CX is going to do HKG-EWR-HKG to compete with United Airlines on this route
From 2001-2005 is was the longest scheduled nonstop "west"bound flight segment in the world, the 2nd-longest scheduled flight segment total, and also part of the longest scheduled roundtrip in the world.
Totally amazing how CO was able to do that in that era, and with a 656K 772ER at that!
it makes absolutely no sense to fly this run over the Pacific... you seem to be forgetting that the Earth is essentially a sphere, not a circle, so it's possible to move in a 3rd degree (i.e., fly this flight north[west] bound as opposed to westbound over California and the Pacific, which would take the routing thousands of miles off course, for nothing)
Yes, you're absolutely right. A glaring oversight on my part (and I pride myself for seeing "the big picture" all the time!). In fact, I had noticed this a couple of weeks after I posted that comment, and hoped that no one would point out my mistake. Good work!
Great circle route (draw a straight line on a flight map from EWR to VHHH and then place it on a sphere). Shortest distance is over the top of the world... not to mention the wind aloft is taken into account... usually they go further north than this flight, however the tailwind was better a bit further south, shaves time off the flight and saves the company gas.
Why don't they fly over the pacific?

nice video why dosen't it go over the pacific i thought it was only SIN-EWR which didn't
how do you work out the time you arrive taking into account of the time difference and international date line ?
thomsonfly645k 2 years ago
because it's a polar flight... it would have to deviate several hundred miles to be over the Pacific, so obviously that's pointless.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
woo long flight. do they have an larger economy class, some airlines have it.

Funny, I thought it would take the Pacific Ocean route b/c it would be shorter than crossing the Atlantic, Europe, middle East and Asia!
