when I met her,I was pretty intense, and SHE seemed to think I was crazy-but she signed my Cd, and played you are loved ffor me,so I was a little hurt-that she would react like that'-cos I'm her biggest fan-but I had short hair and was dressed nice, almost corporate style-so she probably thought I was a cop.so I havent listened to this in years-"Century Plant is SO positive-and I'm only 51-
was this when she opened for Hootie and the Blofish? I think I was there if it was. I remember the crowd was talking all thru her set and it was not cool!
There is nobody like Vic. An amazing songwriter with a singularly beautiful voice, her uplifting music and open, postive view of the world has seen me through many a hard time for nearly two decades. She's a genuine national treasure.
Victoria is truly a treasure. I love her and her work. I appreciate that her music reveals the simple things in life that might have been overlooked. She is so special....
She's magical... first time I heard her sing "Century Plant" I was mesmerized... there was such a connection. I was like "WOW!" and I turned to the the two people beside me and they said "Huh?"... I think you have to be kindred spirit with dear Victoria to get her music. I just love her music!
I remember of her from '94, I was a child and I didn't understand. But her music in my head for all this time...now I hunderstand she's great because now I'm a man.
I've been listening to, and appreciating Vic for decades. She is an amazing songwriter, and performer dedicated to her craft in a HUGE way. She's unique, and some people can't grasp that, but she grows on you... I can only hope people listen to her message, not only is it worth hearing, it's transforming.
Only once in a hundered years it flowers gracefully.
Yes, she's unique and absolutely outstanding in the American songwriting panorama ( and Sweet Relief is proof that many great artists have been overwhelmed by her talent). Plus her voice fits so perfectly in her songs I find it hard to understand its detractors.
She's wonderful! I met her through a friend and we saw Lucinda Williams together long ago. A glorious person with a lovely voice and grweat story skills.
"We used to race to a little country store with a sign tacked to the side, said, 'No L-O-I-T-E-R-I-N-G allowed.' Undeneath that sign always congregated quite a crowd." (05:50/09:55)
Its been a long time Mary...I've changed, but now someone is bring me back.....Taken me way from this Corprate hell. I knew I should have never left. I'm sorry everyone, they brainwashed me with their Industrial Ideas.
MS has affected her ability to play guitar and piano, so she switched to a banjo run trough a reverb. At one point, MS had affected her sight, but it returned. Like everyone with MS, she has good and bad days. But as far as I know, it has never caused her voice to change.
Wow how cool! I saw Victoria in a small club in Manchester UK in 2001. She was amazing, i sat there in the front row with my pearl jam sweater on and she moved the mic stand and sang Crazy Mary right in front of me :) she then came and sat down and signed some stuff and had a chat. Was one of my all time favourite gigs
Vic is the bomb!! I saw her live in Toronto at the Rivoli in 1988 (opening for Peter Case). It was love at first sight for me. She is an amazing singer-songwriter. The message of "Century Plant" is so inspiring! We're invited to rise above our personal pain and come out and play. Truly live life to its fullest! I love you Vic!!
She was in Birmingham this past weekend and just won a passle of new fans. It takes a couple of songs to get on her wavelength, but once you're there, it's an amazing experience. She sings the music, not just the words.
I'm a big Eddie Vedder/Pearljam fan and this is the first time I've seen the original version of this song (Crazy Mary). Thanks for posting. If you haven't seen PJ's version of it I HIGHLY recommend checking it out.
I first hear her voice was when she sang a song called Crazy Mary I think with The Counting Crows...Shes so talented. Reminds me of a female Neil Young...
Victoria Williams has always been acquired taste. If are into American Idol and High School Musical, you probably won't appreciate the genius of Vic. I think many kids may think this song is written by a fictional character named Bert Hanley from the 2003 movie Camp but it was written and recorded by Victoria Williams for her 1994 album Loose.
you cant assume just because some doesnt like victoria williams they like american idol music.i happen to love marc olson and the jayhawks but victoria williams songwriting seems trite and her voice is not at all comparable to neil youngs.
man i dont want to be mean but she sounds horrible. i like the song (the lyrics are nice) but not when she sings it. I cant even bare to listen any longer for the to the second song.

Victoria is a true American asset. It is the unique voices like hers that are what make America a great land. People would do well to remember that.

Victoria's voice takes a little getting used to but she does a warm delivery of Century Plant, certainly outshining any movie version of the song.

for those who are criticizing her voice: she has multiple sclerosis. it's remarkable what she's able to do considering what she's suffering from.

um, i think vic would have the same twangy unique voice even if she didn't have MS.

i wasn't referring to her voice specifically, but more just her entire life and her accomplishments. i find them very impressive.
