another case that makes me feel we need to illigalize copyrights. another case of something we all love taken hostage over the almighty doller. nothing wrong with people makeing money off their work, but as was used for so long, should have EARNED the right to use it forever. what made the song popular thus giveing the oppurtunity to milk it? the fact it was used on hocky night in canada for 40 years.
NOW I HAVE TO WATCH THIS ON TSN EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT?!?! I miss going da da da da da daa daa daa daa daa da da da da da da While Playing Mini hockey in my living room on saturday nights.its not the same on wednesday nights.
I'm a traditionlist and miss this old Hockey Night in Canada theme. @CanadaNS - agree 100 percent with you:). It was a saple at our house on Saturday Nights. I always knew when it was 9 pm back then LOL! haha.
Keep the old THEME!!!...I remember watching HNIC from Depew, NY over the airwaves. It was fuzzy but hearing the HNIC song was a beacon for my brother and I as we felt special being able to watch hockey on a Canadian station (CBC).
spokes, and playing on backyard rinks and frozen ponds, on the street, and on those old tabletop games. Hockey ruled.
So, all these years later, being invited to create a new version of "Canada's second national anthem" for TSN's NHL broadcasts was a huge honour to me, and an exciting musical challenge. The day of recording and filming it "in the presence of the Stanley Cup" was truly one of the great experiences of my life. (Take that, bullies from 50 years ago!)"
Can't you read? The NEW one is not out until tonight. "Growing up in Southern Ontario in the '50s and '60s as 'a kid who couldn't skate right' was a serious handicap," said Peart. "Hockey totally dominated our lives for half the year -- Sunday nights with my dad at the St. Catharines Arena cheering on the Junior A Blackhawks, anxiously watching NHL games on television, arguing in the schoolyard over favourite teams and players, trading hockey cards, putting them on our bicycle spokes, Rush Rules
TSN and Anthem Entertainment Group have confirmed that Neil Peart, renowned drummer of legendary rock band Rush, will record a special rendition of The Hockey Theme, the iconic theme song originally written by Dolores Claman in 1968.
Peart is widely regarded as the world's most accomplished and most-respected drummer/percussionist. As the drummer and primary lyricist for the trio, Peart has recorded 18 studio albums with Rush which have sold over 40 million units worldwide.
Neil Peart recorded a new rock version of The Hockey Theme last month, and the percussion-inspired rendition of "Canada's second national anthem" will make its NHL ON TSN debut tomorrow: Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 7 p.m. ET during the Philadelphia @ Toronto game.
Peart's rendition of The Hockey Theme also available to fans on iTunes on January 19 and his custom drum kit used to record "Canada's second national anthem" to be donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
For the recording, Peart wore his trademark cap adorned with the logos of the original six NHL teams. He also wore a hockey jersey featuring his "Bubba's Bar & Grill" logo on the front and the number three on the back, in reference to the three members of Rush. The band's name was also sewn onto the jersey's nameplate.

By far the ONLY Hockey night in Canada song ever! :( I miss it so. YOu guys are so right. It's pure nostalgia. I remember Cold winter Canadian nights as a kid, and all I had to do was hear this song from the other room, and I know that meant my dad was watching Hockey and I could stay up to watch it with him :)
This song is waayyyy better then the new one they have on CBC, the theme song CBC has now sounds like some irish/scottish dance....it aint sound like hockey night in canada anymore
What has happened to Hockey Hertiage??? Is everything just all about money? Where will it all end? One day there will be no more Hockey. Who knows at the rate it's all going. If Don Cherry leaves It just won't be the same. More money, more money. It pisses me off.
simple solution, have the REAL hockey song saved on a cd or something portable and convinient, and simply mute the tv when the canadian gold song comes up and play the true song with the visuals provided by the cbc...i know im gonna try it out, i just dont think its gonna be the same :(
The solution is easy....simply boycott the CBC. Watch TSN instead. The CBC (Communist Boadcasting Corporation) has become a rag of a corporation. The song that will replace it sounds more like a cheesy special olympics theme song (no offence to special olympics folks).
One very simple and easy question to the CBC, "Who was fired for incompetence for losing this song?"--if no one was, fire the CBC Chairman--the bucks stops with him.
CBC has lost its way. I remember during the last strike they would show movies on saturday night..they called it "Movie Night In Canada" and they had Ron Maclean as the host. And they put on a movie called "Amelie" (which they called a "romantic comedy")....I wrote an angry letter to the CBC because the movie contained multiple orgasm bed scenes, sex shop dildos and other mature adult themes. I'm sure lot's of parents didn't expect a hockey themed show putting on trashy adult cr@p. Shame on CBC!
CBC's outright supidity (fire 5 of their do-nothing executives and that would have generated sufficient money to buy the song). This is one of the major reasons I'm voting Conservative--shake this damn CBC up!!!
It cost about $500 in licensing fees per game while it was on and Dolores Claman was offered the same amount again. Apparently she was asking for an increase of about 15 per cent, what her agency said was an industry standard. CBC also offered to buy it outright for a high six-figure sum.
The CBC is crap, they lost the anthem, they screwed Dave Hodge (anyone remember that!) not to mention their pro LIEberal spin on everything. Don Cherry will soon be gone as well.. probably to TSN.
I hate to say this but CBC always fucks up. They took alway Chris Cuthbert and the CFL and they also lost the rights to HNIC theme song. You might as well as look foward to HNIC on CTV or TSN instead of CBC. Good for CTV AND TSN bad for CBC

Hey This is an amazing song that I grew up with and I totally agree with you. I wonder where you got this particular recording as I'm very interested in getting one, of good quality, myself. Please let me know and thanks for posting this!
I have this CRAZY conspiracy as to why the CBC didn't renew it's contract.Maybe the CBC was looking for a show similar to greatest Canadian where they can get a lot of viewers, and the prez of CBC sports did say that they are planning to hold a contest to pick the next theme song, it is bound to get a lot of viewers, and boost it's ratings. Then again this is most likely a BS conspiracy theory.
This is sad. It's a Canadian tradition. My husband and I even used it as the music to end our wedding ceremony when we walked back down the aisle together.... it's legendary.
