@DanReborn I think the problem is that they are not emotionally ready to handle it - especially at 12 when some girls haven't even hit puberty yet! If there is no age of consent, predators will take advantage of that even more than they already do. Think about it though - a twelve year old doesn't have the mental capacity to understand the consequences and to make life altering decisions. Also, at that age they are more likely to be manipulated or coerced into it.

The age at which people are able to handle sex has not risen, neither has the average lifespan for adults increased to any important degree. People still die at 70+ years of age, and women still get menopause at the same age, so if they don't have babies early, they can miss out, or even have more problems like birth defects.

Seriously, you have to be mentally prepared for all the consequences that could come from being together with someone sexually. You might be physically ready to experience sex, but that's only half of what it takes to take a relationship to that level. I live in Moscow and am in 8 grade at a private school and there are only a couple of people that have had sex in 10 and 11 grades... But most of the kids that do it early are in bad schools with bad teachers who don't teach them how important it is not to do stupid things that you will later on regret... Raising the age of consent is a fake solution. Age of consent laws are more used for criminal cases of rape and other sexual abuse to determine complicity of the parties involved- these laws are only useful AFTER the fact, and has no use BEFORE the fact.
