@hoplite1766 Thought it was based on the General Electric J-79 series like the F-4 Phantom, which accounted for the telltale exhaust plume. The F-104's I worked on had the GE J-79-11, and the Phantoms which I'm familiar with while in the USAF, had-15 on the recces and early model F-4's. The F-4'E/F's had -17's, like our foreign counterparts.
I love the first scene where the French Mirage fighters take off and slowly climb out, then the Starfighters take off and climb almost straight up, I am sure beating the Mirages to altitude!!
During its period of service with the German armed forces, about 290 German Starfighters were lost in accidents, just under 30 percent of the total force. Exactly 116 pilots were killed. However, the attrition rate in German service was not all that much greater than that of the F-104 in service with several other air forces, including the United States Air Force. Canada had the unenviable record of losing over 50 percent of its 200 single-seat CF-104s in flying accidents.
The Germans were transitioning from the F-86 to the F-104 which was a beast to fly even for experienced pilots. Along with the weather and the terrain, the F-104 crash rate was understandable.
Well, I really am sorry about it, but i think they knew what their job was about... Also, the F-104 was not for everyone, and they also knew that. If you compare the Luftwaffe casualties with Greek casualties (concerning the F-104) you will see that plane is fine. No plane flies alone and if the Starfighter was ineffective in such a deadly way it would have never been exported outside the US...
the aircraft was just totally wrong for a country as germany is. bad sight, bad weather etc. this F104 was kind of a nice weather interceptor and needs much space for speed.... not that restricted as in germany required. germany had to build in much more equipment to match this, ending up in a too heavy unstable unsecure aircraft. but we can blame lockheed too cause they knew that this aircraft did't match our requirements. therefore that more then 200 crashes.
yes, for me as german. the F104 starfighter has a really really bad taste. it always lets you think about the crashes and death. ... therefore all here know the german nicknames: flying casket, earth nail, widowmaker...
well, i agree. germany's weather is not the best for this aircraft. But i'm just thinking... does the weather also forbids the use of porsches? do a lot of people get killed in porsches on germany. Germans are usually excellent handlers and makers of any technology! i wonder why the f-104 went so wrong! i agree that some of the crashes could be beacause of the weather etc. but you have to admit that there had to be a lot of bad or untrained pilots involved too!
you can't compare a porsche with an aircraft that has almost NO lift without enginepower (flyring rocket... and back then really bad ejection systems). most of the crashes in germany had not the cause of pilot errors. but cuase of structural errors malfunctions engine failture corrision etc. . lockheed agreed with the wanted changes of the structur and weight of the german F404Gs and said back then... this aint gonna cause any problems. BUT IT DID BADLY!
well, i'm sure you know better as a german. but that's why i was always wondering how it got so bad... These planes were a specific order made especially for germany. The G version would have never been made if it wasn't for germany. Maybe the only mistake was the choice of this aircraft in the first place. No matter how much you can "fix" an ugly lady, she will always be... ugly!
sure the choice was wrong. but lockheed made bribery to german politicans! (Lockheed bribery scandals can be seen at wikipedia) (that was a big affair back then) that they almost gave some of the jets for free! we all know why.... a german party had received at least $10 million for West Germany's purchase of 900 F-104G Starfighters in 1961. great dont you think? why did lockheed this??? did they know nobody would buy otherwise? USAF quit using them fast why??
F-104Cs served in SEA in 1965-66 and 1966-67 during two separate deployments. Over the course of these two deployments, no enemy aircraft were engaged by F-104s while flying escort or CAP missions.
By 1964, the USAF's only primary air superiority aircraft, the F-104C, had been forward deployed on several occasions to project US power and assure control of the air during world crises. The F-104 was widely regarded as the world's foremost daylight air-to-air platform.
an article part of wikipedia: "The USAF was less than satisfied with the Starfighter and procured only 296 examples in single-seat and two-seat versions. At the time, USAF doctrine placed little importance on air superiority (the "pure" fighter mission), and the Starfighter was deemed inadequate for either the interceptor or tactical fighter-bomber role, lacking both payload capability and endurance compared to other USAF aircraft!" but they continued to sell it with bribery!
it's true that when companies and politicians get together it can't be good! the f-104 indeed was not succesfull in the US. By the time it first flew they already had much better ones! but there always is the other side: It was much loved in greece by its crew and replacing it with the A7Es was pretty stupid to me. Now we replce the A7 with what..? f-16 i think? What bout those F-14D's that they just scrapped in the US? perfect for the aegean scenery i think! My point is,never trust politicians
I love the first clip where the French Mirage foo foo fighters climb out, then the Starfighters take off almost straight up and I'm sure beat the Mirages to altitude!!

Wonderful tribute to the "Zipper." My dad was an IP & flew the 104 for 6 years. Absolutely loved that a/c. He said it was an a/c that demanded 100% of your attention but was a straight forward plane. He got into a couple "knife fights" with some F-4's and waxed them (this was from one of the Phantom Drivers who got waxed!). It was a great privilege to grow up to the sounds of that eerie J-79.
Extremely high rate of sink, notorious for flame outs before they put the compensators in, and a very dangerous jet to fly if you're not highly trained to handle it.

F-104 ''The Legend''"The Flying Coffin"Even with these new Starfighters, the loss rate remained high, with peaks in 1973 and 1975 (ten F-104s of all versions were lost in AMI service during this period). Up to 1997, Italy had lost 137 (38%) of its F-104s in 928,000 flying hours (14.7 aircraft every 100,000 hrs).
