Jesus, this describes pretty much every aweful band that plays at open mic nights at bars where I live....seriously, it could have been filmed at one of them
OMG, I forgot about this!!! "Ghost World" is one of the best movies, and comics, ever! Oh, and if you want to watch an unusual "blues" scene, what was the name of that movie Ralph Macchio was in back in the late 80's? Old bluesman taught him how to play...
The juxtaposition of seeing this band play in the movie, after the authentic bluesman was ignored in the bar, really exposes what sucks about our culture right now. The movie altogether is a pretty smart social commentary. But it's very depressing.
Oh man. I sang two songs with a cover band that was EXACTLY Blueshammer. I was astounded how similar it was. After it was over, I walked away thinking "Man... I can't belive I just performed with friggin Blueshammer!" I was kind of ashamed.
I like to think I can play the blues pretty well for a white boy, but it probably does sound more like this. Might be time to embrace the chromosomes and trade the Tele for a banjo or accordion, get some Yani CDs or that Lord of the Dance shit.
I know this is pedantic and totally missing the point, but there were a whole bunch of Irish slaves transported to the Americas in the 17th century. Personally I think this is worth mentioning, cos its all too convenient for rich left-wingers to act as if slavery etc is purely a 'black' problem and therefore you can fence it off as a race issue. On the other hand, this IS hilarious.
Go back further and look up how the Islamic enslaved the Africans first and introduced it to the Europeans later. Also, the Muslim northern African countries also lived off of the christian European slaves and privates for centuries. Where the countries paying for them to leave them alone, and in 1812 the newly built American navy went in there to fix the problem.
It's weird how people only refer to slavery as a white/black issue. Most cultures have, at one time or another, enslaved the less privileged of their own race, much of this taking place long after slavery in America. Not to mention slavery is still going on in various places around the world, etc. etc. It's an issue of human rights for everyone, not just one group of people in one country.
But still, this video is funny as shit. Middle class douche thinking he's been ploooowin'.
Shit, even calling it hard rock is already giving it a bit more credit than it deserves. It's like a step above hair metal. I always think of Blues Hammer when I hear Nickelback or some bozos saying they're big fans of Led Zeppelin.
In the words of the great George Carlin: "In the first place white people got no business playing the blues. Ever. At all. Under any circumstances. . . . What the fuck do white people have to be blue about? . . . Shit, white people oughta understand their job is to give people the blues, not to get them. And certainly not to sing or play them."
Well, George is full of it on this one. He has bought into the Rainbow crap which maintains that white=priveldge, at least for the purposes of that particular joke. The clip is funny because the singer is imitating blues singers whi ALSO never picked cotton, and who know more about drug addiction than share-cropping. The Blues is a state of mind usually but not always associated with poverty or oppression. It knows no race.
actually it's not at all funny "because the singer is imitating blues singers who also never picked cotton" except to you I guess. You are inventing a deeper angle than there is to the joke.
Carlin's joke is funny even if it doesn't ring true, welcome to entertainment.
what do you mean? blues singers never picked cotten!!!!??? there are plenty of blues musicians that have and songs that originated on the cotten fields so what do you mean? i think you are inventing a deeper angle than there is.
