  • i love it!im playing it in a competition

  • Ive heard Justin Bieber is up to do this song

  • Different but good!

  • needs an irish accent

  • @emmett12345678

I was reared to believe a good song is a good song no matter who sings it.

So I'd take it as a compliment that someone of Knopflers standing not onlyknew the song but actually recoerded it and I as a Dubliner didn't finf anything wrong with it ok he's no Luke Kelly Goad rest him but who is and come to that Paddy Kavanagh God rest him hadn't a note

  • Ring the bells taht still can ring

    Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack in eveything

That's how the light gets in

    Class song

    Pat Savage

  • I love Luke Kellys version of this, - in fact, he was the first to sing it, in a Dublin pub, after Benedict Kiely noticed that Paddy Kavenaghs poem would fit perfectly into the melody of " Fáinne Geal an lae " (dawning of the day),

I heard Ronnie Drew sing it twice, and he blew the audience away, - different from Lukes interpretation, but, the only real contender for No.1

  • very nice

  • Have a listen to the superb version by the great Maurice Dickson from Northern Ireland and see what you think.

  • beautiful version but still luke kelly is king of the ballad

  • this sucks , original is so much better

  • Sorry to say, but Mark`s version is the worst I´ve ever heard.

  • good version but luke kelly all the way

  • as much as i love Mark he's not singing he's talking it, Peter Rowans bluegrass version is the best, in my musical opinion.

  • mairtin o connor in the area!..

  • Amazing... Anyone knows the chords for THIS version? plz let me know.

  • nice performance!!!!

  • The song is about an Irish poet ,- paddy Kavenagh, who fell in love with a medical student in UCD called Hilda Moriarty,

    - She was actually screen-tested for the part in " the quiet man " with Maureen o' Hara, ( rem. the one with John Wayne )

She was truly a stunning beauty, and what a " Muse " for Paddy...

BTW. - thanks for the lovely upload, - always loved Mark..

  • I'm a knopfler fan and love the many stunning songs he has written but this jerky breathless rendition is not good! If this is due to the fags GIVE EM UP NOW.

  • Was worried about this one, but not half bad! Knopfler's voice suits it - a difficult song to sing without sounding dire (sorry). Then again, Lunny rarely gets it wrong.

  • good version ,but nothing compares to lukes voice

  • @stephengillan34 couldn't agree more, also a mention 4 the Chieftans who beautifully backed this performer

  • thats terible....get the real irsih version!

  • The best Version Ive come across besides Luke Kelly's is the version by Dick Gaughan.. he does some wonderfull finger playing and the effect is haunting...

  • dogshit in comparison to luke kellys version

  • @danek36 perhaps, but its the spirit of the song that still comes out. which makes it such a great tune to do.

  • Music, words and voice it's the paradise !!!

  • "Gonna die now, I think."

  • This is my favorite rendition of Raglan Road!

Thank you for posting it. ;-)

  • Lovely version... despite a couple of fluffed lines ;)

  • Have to say, not a huge fan of this version it'd nearly put you asleep. Have a listen to Luke Kellys earlier versions of this. Great as the studio version is, I think the earlier versions are better...

  • sorry folks but he's irish!

  • Mark Knofler is a Geordie, not Scottish...

  • @ducdejoyeuse He is Scottish, grew up there until 7 years old when he moved to Newcastle.

  • @mirwin931 born in glasgow + grew up in blythe not newcastle not far off but no cigar :-)

  • Patrick Kavanagh <3

  • Absolutely beautiful! What a nice rendition and tribute to Luke Kelly.

  • I think Mark did a wonderful job! very good version indeed.

  • Good, but Kelly's version can never be matched or beaten

  • @crc778Hypnodoc Hard to do granted but such a perfect song will be tried by all who feel it - including myself - Knoppler - has is flavour of course but he doesn't do any justice to this song at all - Kelly/ O'Connor is the best that I've heard so far ...... but all of us have tried a verse or too - lol

  • promote culture deny war

  • I think Luke himself would have been very happy with this version, fair dues is right!

  • Even as a Dubliner I have to to say this is a gem fair dues

  • May god bless him for his amazing gift of talent, and also that he gives us so much pleasure as we listen and sometimes only learn a snippet of what he shows us.

  • You won't remember but we spent an interesting night in Dublin once when I was working for Davy Hammond? You have left a mark on my soul....

  • Great tune, bizzare third verse, and I never realised Mark Knopfler was Irish (just a joke, folks).

  • Go on Mark smile .... I dare you.

  • His voice is very moving in this one.

  • he just ruins da song, cant sing for shit

  • This is good but no one can beat Luke Kelly version.

  • @hookheader The versions are quite different. I like Luke's version more cause there is a kind of joy in it. It is rather strange - "reach" man version so sad and "poor" man version with calm and hope

  • Like, yes MK is amazing but in this genre he couldnt hold a candle to Luke

  • Questa è una poesia allietata da una meravigliosa melodia.

    Thanks tomtscotland.

  • amazing...MK never stops surprising me..

  • makes the hair stand on the back of your neck, just beautiful

  • lovely

  • I'm Irish, and a fan in general of Irish music, have to say I like this version, didn't like it first time I heard it but it grew on me :)

  • Comment removed

  • Don't know what to say... but one thing I'm sure.... He's just Great and smiles like an Angel and that's what he is !!!

  • lovely .. Great to hear someone like mark take on songs like this ..

  • A favorite song, and an extraordinary rendition. Few people would have the integrity to sing it like mark knopfler has here- and I agree that luke would no doubt appreciate it.

    Wonderful accompaniment too.

  • I've heard this a million times, but this version brought me to tears.

  • I love all versions of Raglan, but this one is truly excellent even if I cannot pronounce his name.

  • Massive Luke and Knopfler fan here. This is a superb rendition that im sur Luke would appreciate. Beautiful!

  • @elrobster1

Yeah I think both Luke and Ronnie Drew would appreciate it. :) I know I do.

  • Don't hate me but this is the BEST version of Raglan Road I ever heard. Takes me back to a long-lost love and the hundreds of 'what-ifs' and 'if-onlys' that followed. Oh, well...

  • Fáinne Geal an Lae...

  • Great version... Mark is ingenious...

  • Beautiful rendition... really enjoyed it; true to heart.

  • Veryy good. Peter Rowan does even better.

  • well i was reared on luke K-s version but this is a very interesting interpretation. full marks to mark for singing it.

    macmór/germany

  • fuck me, this is a terrible version

  • @nolzers You know nothing about music.

  • @PrehistoricPinup hmm, i don't know what i was thinking, i actually really like this on second listen. i remember i was pished first time round though. "you know nothing about music" is a fairly pointless response to someone having different taste to yours, however.

  • @PrehistoricPinup It's a perfectly valid opinion. I happen to agree with him

  • Van Morrison and the Chieftons do a great version of this song

  • This sounds like a horrid country song. I love this song, but not by this guy. Where is the passion? His emotions are not matching to the lyrics at all. This is so overdone. Look at all these great musicians here backing him up. He could at least try and sing the song.

  • Mark's raglan road is wonderfull!!! but Luke is the best !!!

  • he is singing the song to match the story it tells one of a lost love. its really clever. Its got great character this way.

  • What an artists!!! perfect so clean, i love this one. Mark is superb!!!!!!!!

  • I like them both..... But ofcourse.... Its a matter of which taste You got... No offense to anybody..

  • lovely arrangement

  • Anyone who says that this better than luke kellys should get a hearing aid!

  • Totally agreed

  • True, bud

  • Please give me one.

  • Absolutely good post Mr Tomtscotland... Know about where to get the whole DVD ?

  • youn fuckin wanker

  • its a pretty sad song though if you listen to the words...?

  • I still like Van`s version a bit better. But fair play to ya Marco.....

  • First time ever hearing this song and of all the other versions out there I have to say this melody fits the lyrics the best; because you can feel the regret in his voice and the melody. Joan Osborne sings a better tune, but it is more of sadness due to lost the regret. And the original by Luke Kelly sounds more like reminiscing than regretting. But maybe that's what Irish people do, they reminiscent their regret and are proud to tell their sob stories. Well OK half the world does that.

  • Zoegnosis, I agree with ur point and its very gud but I grew up reading that poem and listening to the tune and I realised early on that he was looking back with regret but he accepted fate but to tend his scar he looked at himself as a fallen angel. I am irish. Great song

  • @eoinroe47

    well said lad.

Always love patricks poetry and felt he was overshadowed by Joyce.

Just started reading his poetry again and have really connected with what he was trying to say.

  • @ZoeGnosis The Girl in the poem was Dr Hilda Moriarty...who later married Donagh O'Malley who became minister of education in the sixties...

  • @ZoeGnosis i agree but luke kellys wasnt the original. the tunes been around for ages

  • Luke Kelly version was the original version it was wrote by the Irish poet Patrick kavanagh Luke was the first to sing it

  • @ZoeGnosis

you should listen Dick Gaughan's version :)

sadly, no one posted it on youtube, but feel free to look for it somewhere else,

    it's marvelous

i would dare to compare it with Luke's version :)

  • @ZoeGnosis i dont think its regret, i think its sadness that she didnt pick him. he cant regret her decision. and even though he is sad he persued her he knew he had to, she was that special. "let grief be a fallen leaf". luke kelly is reminiscing and sad but thats better than regret. he would regret never having chased her and never having known if she would have chosen him.a great poem and a great melody.

  • @lawndog6794

I agree with your assessment of the poem/song

"Hilda Moriarity on the origin of 'on raglan road"

    /watch?v=I1mxaC6_rR4

  • @ZoeGnosis Joyouus

  • non e' irlandese , cazzo ,vai grande giovanni trapattoni . e forza irlanda

  • i love that thick scottish voice

really makes this tune more uplifting

  • @jferkfjkj i thought he's from newcastle??

  • @941jack He was born in Glasgow; the family moved to North-East England when he was seven. I don't hear much of Glasgow in his voice!

  • @jferkfjkj you should here the one and only Luke Kelly sing this song, then you'll hear a melody

  • @jferkfjkj This is an Irish song, and the whole of the band is IRISH. Except the singer/guitarist who comes from Newcastle in England. He is what is known as a Geordie. He used to play guitar for the band Dire Straits. BUT he is not Scottish, nor is Donal Lunny, Liam Og O' Flynn, Mairtin O' Connor, Sean Keane (fiddler with the Chieftains) or the rest of the band.

  • @jferkfjkj - That's a Geordie (Newcastle North East England ) accent.

  • Luke Kelly's work stands on its own and does not need you Bozos going about defaming other artists.

  • Too true!

  • Just became a mark fan. Never thought I would here a version of this as good as luke kelly but you have changed it from an Irish love song to an international one and I love it.

  • You should hear Sinhead O'conners version, haunting voice, like this arrangement too, but looks like he's reading the lyrics

  • I have to agree, could not have worded it better. Knopfler is my favourite musician by the way.

  • Maxiprofit - I can only assume you were, deaf, drunk or work for nevilles pub!

  • I enjoy Lorenna Mckennitt's work, particularly The Highwayman, and the Lady of Shalott, but I feel that Raglan Road is best performed by a man. While Knopfler's voice lacks the virtuoso qualities of his quitar picking, he is gifted with brilliant interpretation. This song, and underlying poem conjoin the conflicting emotions of regret and longing, the nexus of lost/unrequited love and Knopfler's Celtic heart knows that address.

  • Agree, I have no doubt Lorenna is one of, if not THE best female vocalist of our time, and the Mummer's Dance video set in Spain is a work of cinematography itself. But a tune has to fit the artist, and this one,at this tone and beat, by Knopfler is a perfect fit, this song belongs to Mark. And I have all of Loreena's CDs too, and none of his.

  • i prefer lorenna mckinnet's version

  • Luke Kelly's version is too boldly sung for my taste. Knopfler's sad, introspective rendition is my favorite.

  • I love this tune. I played it on the bagpipes at my mother-in-law's funeral this fall. It's melancholy and hopeful at the same time. Raglan Road is set to the traditional air "The Dawning of the Day" (Fáinne Geal an Lae) composed by Thomas Connellan in the 17th Century.

  • nothing will ever be as good as luke kelly singing this song

  • covered by Rowwen heze- november

  • Type neville's pub fethard on sea to hear one of our locals sing a better version and he was drunk!

  • very suspect! Should stick to the guitar!

  • This is actually my favourite rendition.

  • you can copy luke and he dosent try to its a tribute to a song and singer that the world knows to little about

  • preciosa

  • so many people have covered this song and this is the worst & i love dire straits

  • This is Knopfler's style, he does not sing, he does not just read it either, it's something in between. If you expect him to sing like Luke Kelly, you do not know Mark at all.

  • Reminscent of our own Leonard Cohen.

  • I'd like to hear Lenny do it.

  • Well said

  • well said, mark is uniqe so is his voice,i think that this is brilliant!

  • ur fuckin righ

  • excellent answer buddy! It's Mark's style...Mark always puts his signature on every song his sings.

  • BRILLIANT BACKING ..but i could sing it better meself ........... Luke is king of this song

  • Hello

This is a lovely recording almost perfect.

The backing is superb and voice great.

There is just one smigeen of a problem in the 3rd verse.

The words thats known sound awkward.

The words . thats known to the artists who have known true gods of sound and stone.. show be kept together.

But all in all a lovely rendering.

    Bill

  • No. Only Luke Kelly. I'm a huge Knopfler fan, but only Luke Kelly can sing this song. No debate. Fact.

  • stop saying mark cant cover this song he sings with passion and i think his performance is awesome

  • its a song... anyone who wants to should be allowed to sing it. and by the way , i do really like marks version of it.

  • It seems like he has a very deep personal connection to this song...he obviously feels the meaning of the words deeply

  • i think its beautiful..............

  • My favourite pipes

  • If you listen to the original record, you'll know this is a playback exibition. Anyway, incredible voice sound..

  • u sound like Blaithin Ní Chofaigh when you say this...go watch Niamh Mc Glinchey sing it....maybe then you will change your mind...in my opinion hers is a brilliant version

  • Gotta say, didn't really like this version when I first heard it but it's growing on me :) no matter who sings it, it's still an incredible song :D

  • Beautiful, Mark and co.

  • This is a great version and it is sung with passion!

  • he's no luke kelly!

  • Cavanaugh's music and lyrics blend to create the purest quality of Irish heartbeak and music

  • what an all-star line-up to Knopflers left!

  • i really like this.the simpleness with which he delivers the words helps convey and underline the heartbreak the poem describes. nice work

  • thanks 4 the explanation Mark! Great song & altho I like this, still prefer Van the Man!

  • I love the arrangement on this one but although I love Mark's voice his phrasing is a little bit off here.

  • Mark looks a bit absent minded. He's reading the lyrics in stead of really singing them.

  • Mairtin O'Connor on accordion ... and a double bass player somewhere in the dark ?

  • Yeah I can agree with that, sure, but it's the implications of: I the angel and she the creature made of clay - that for me is slightly problematical.

  • Always loved listening to this since Van Morrison and the Chieftains. This is another very moving version, though I am loathe to admit I don't much care for the message of the lyrics. Who does he think he is? springs to mind. The tune though is bloody beautiful.

  • I like the lyrics. They bring a message about temptation, sin, consequence, romance found and lost, etc. The themes are universal.

  • great version, well done for posting it
