Great job. I just was in Playa del Carmen and witnessed a woman who was scuba diving less than 100- meters from shore be pulled in unconscious. Don't know the whole story yet, but she died. 58 year old woman in Mexico with her family for a wedding. Very sad. You ARE a hero!
I came to realize that you are checking on 2 random divers and you weren't the DM of the dive. Great job. You are truly a hero. Probably just saved the life of those 2 clowns
I am trained as a rescue diver too and I am glad to have run across your video. I only once had to get a guy who was descending too quickly and he also was not watching his depth-gauge. When I tried to pull him up, he pulled me back down because he thought I was ascending too quickly. It was a short dive - ran out of air :)
Unbelievable. I was just thinking recently that PADI should make certification stricter....I've seen way too many people in over their heads (so to speak). I'm an advanced diver who recently got skin bends while diving within a safe profile....if that can happen, just imagine what can happen to some of these other idiots. They're lucky you were there. And shame on that dive master too....
ahpoolman You are an asset to the dive community. The way this entire dive went down is typical during wall dives. Even experienced deep divers often screw up their depth on wall dives and on Nitrox as you know that can be fatal. Lucky for them you where there. You handled the situation perfectly and the reality is you probably saved 2 lives because of it. You saved one for certain. Cheers my friend. You can now ad Awesome to your other diving certifications.
Im glad that you posted a video like this. It shows how real and dangerous diving can be if you act a fool. My fiance and I are getting cert next month. I've purchased used but some of the best equiptment. I'm VERY careful so I hope watching video's like this will help her to understand how critical it is to pay attention to everything.
@barthsimpson3 No it's not. If it comes down to drowning or coming up a controlled ascent is always a better option. These divers were not under deco and could safely ascend 1' per second. The rule is below 100' you can ascend 1' per second and above 100fsw you slow it to 1' per 2 seconds. In an emergency 1' per second would be fine and it is possible and realtively safe to buddy breath at 15' for 3 minutes adding further to the safety if possible. Under deco they would have been in deep shit.
Thanks for posting that, I'm newly certified diver and I'm concerned about doing something stupid like that. I'm taking more training because I don't think that four dives quite prepares you for all that can go wrong.
Wow.... really? .... i never thought people could be so regardless about their own safety in deep waters. I R BasicDiver :) ... why courses and gear so expensive :< .... lol, just the basic equipment is well over 3000$ (the best reasonable gear which lasts pretty much a lifetime).
So what happens if they let go of you and you have your BCD inflated to lift 3 people? Now you're the one with DCS. Thanks for helping these morons but don't incur this risk.
@MattJohnson9 - sure it's easy to dump air from a BCD but the point here is that the rescue diver had enough air in his BCD to lift him and two other people. If he let go of the other divers for whatever reason it would make him incredibly buoyant and no he is going to have an uncontrolled accent. That much air is hard to get out quickly..
Just something to think about for next time, perhaps review your rescue course book.
@clipperTT I don't usually respond to the comments because I get so many of them. Instead of critiquing the "PADI RESCUE BOOK" and telling me how I should handle the situation under water, I wonder what you would have done with 2 people in an OOA situation. @clipperTT LOL ClipperTT. You shouldn't think for a second that my skills in the water would ever allow me to loose control of 2 victims. Do you know what the US Navy taught me in a double rescue situation, besides deploying out of helicopters? If I had 2 panicked divers I was trained to knock one out! My life as a rescue swimmer/diver for the Navy was much more valuable then the victims in the water because of the training they put into me. Don't underestimate me skill level. THX

@7Lakings7 oh n if i had two panicked divers i was trained to knock them BOTH out. i was also taught that going in to help victims were the last thing to do, not because i'm valuable, but because if the victim puts my life in danger, you now have two guys drowning instead of one
Good video. The divers are just asking for trouble. Cant believe how deep they were and they werent checking their air. Do they not even know about safety stops ?? They should have been diving.

How ironic. We started our Cert class last night and we have a 12 year old in the class. I hope he has more sense then to not dive within his limits. Scary stuff!!!
if there was a different in the readings between your spg and the shop's fill station spg thats just an example of gear that isn't calibrated properly. and filled hot, and cooled down, you could lose 30 bar easily. people hot fill tankes to 3300-3400 psi and they sit at 3000 when cool.
i agree babe4fish13, but there are some good dive story sites on the net too. Try the myscubastory site. They have real life dive stories and dive accident videos. Put myscubastory into google, and its the first result.
This is very untrue. A J-Valve (not made anymore) had 500 psi reserve accesible by a lever and were made for units without pressure gauges. The pressure gauge on a tank reads the pressure from the tank (like a tire pressure gauge). SOURCE: I am a diving instructor.
But isnt that so, that the dive pressure reader shows less air than the actual pressure is for dive safety. Im not an expert, nor diving instructor, but last time I had to recheck my bottle if it was empty or not. The pressure from the tank according to the reader of the divecenter was showing exactly 240 bar. When I prepared my bcd, at the start my apparatus was showing 210 bar. There is no way I Iost 30 bar.
there is most certainly *not* a magical extra 500 psi hiding in your scuba tank. In fact, the regulator that gives you that air is sitting at an interstitial pressure of somewhere in the 140psi range so if you had less than that you might not even get to breathe it all because the regulator may not actually crack open....good regs fail in the open position so you can breathe but cheap regs likely fail closed.
@sylverbard LOL who said that there is an extra 500 of PSI in a tank!! I would tell him that there's and extra 20 gallons of gas in his car when the gas light comes on!
my friend, you are to be commended, you recognized a problem and took charge based on good experienced knowledge and saved two lives, i love people like you and strive to be likewise. We are a different breeed.
Outstanding job. I just received my open water certification last year through PADI and enjoy diving alot. Some day soon I hope to have my master diver certification. Wow! Nice saving, in confederation of CMAS over 30meters of depth is technical diving, and that's true, people that have one everything right on a dive deeper than 30 meters have got DCS. Now I'm CMAS P1, CMAS Basic Nitrox and CMAS P2 and I have 102 dives in Finnish cold waters and still I feel a complete rookie. Diver is never ready diver...
What a save. You risked drowning and DCS to help these dumbbells.
LESSON LEARNED: KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR SPG (submersible [air] pressure gauge) AND YOU BUDDY'S AT ALL TIMES, AND EVEN MORE OFTEN AS YOU GO DEEPER. The "Rule of Thirds" is a life-saver (one-third for the descent, one-third for the ascent, and one-third in reserve), and should be always taught and practiced. I would be surprised if one or more of these three did not suffer a DCS (the Bends) hit from the rapid ascent….
congrats for saving the rookies,, I too have been in that situation and had my reg taken by a paniced diver @ 160'. Dive master should have been reported at the least,,
@Kokoda144 yeah, There is a dive chart that has all the calculations on it. The "time" of air you have left is dependent on you depth because the deeper you are = the more the air is compressed, therefore each breath at a greater depth used more air. This is why you need advanced certifications to dive at that depth. I cant post a link, but its called a "dive table", google it.
I hope the divemaster was reported and those 2 idiots smacked up side their heads. Divers such as those two are the reason government regulations are being proposed. Pay attention and know your limits, there is no such thing as an unlimited air supply tank!!
ture OKJM40 but there are good dive stories and videos on the net also. Try the myscubastory site. Type myscubastory into google and its the first one
It happened to me once when working at fish farm cages as a commercial diver, when i already was an experimented diver. Before my 2nd dive of the day i just forgot to check the air and took an empty tank. I can't tell how i didn't notice it was empty by the weight. I run out of air about 5-10 minutes of diving at 10 metres deep. I went to my partner and picked his 2ndary regulator... no air, he had closed the valve because it leaked a little! We ascended sharing his air... ALWAYS CHECK
ok your correct girldiver245 but there are also good dive stories on the web too... try the myscubastory site.. type myscubastory into google and its the first one ... enjoy
yes mizmaringirl5 but there also good dive stories to be found on the net - try the myscubastory site ... type myscubastory into google - its the first one i think
Well done...nice save. I was in the Bahamas myself last year diving with an 'experienced' diver. At 500psi I told him I needed to go up and do my 'check'...he pissed around taking pics...at 400psi I really gave him another signal...at 300psi he got the message all the while taking fuckin pics. A couple min into our 'check' and I run out of air with 250 psi still showing on my gauge. 2 lessons...get my own equip and not every exp diver is a good one.
Good work mate! Responsibility is essential key to safety!!! And if those two would run out of air it would not be not just their life that they would put in danger, they would even put evreyone rescuer that would have to try save thems life in danger! To save two lifes underwater alone is close to imposible alone! If they had runned out of air and started to panic!
Above or below I like to think we all have it in us to help someone in stress! Most of us would live the rest of their lives living in guilt if we turn our back , some lives change with the demons of guilt haunting them . Its such a twist when you do help, you sleep way better,People respect you as you do yourself.
Instructors cannot be blamed for this!! It is each diver's responsibility to dive within their limits!
Instructors are only responsible for what goes on during a class, they cannot control you after the class!
To the diver that saved two lives, great job! If not for you, there would very likely have been 2 casualties that day, at the very least, a couple of severe injuries!
alot of fly by night dive companies out there. its the divers responsibiltiy to look after their own safety. as seen here some DM's are in their own little world. dont count on them to be there for you. check those guages early and often! use common sense. if checking your gauges is too difficult, then do yourself a favor. dont go in the water
Am I the only one who finds it stange that in the middle of this apparent emergency, the person decided taking video of the dive and the computer close ups was so important. Take away their camera? He should have put his down way earlier and been more focused on his divers to begin with!
Am I the only one who finds it stange that in the middle of this apparent emergency, the person decided taking video of the dive and the computer close ups was so important. Take away their camera? He should have put his down way earlier and been more focused on his divers to begin with!
@kenm323 He isn't holding his camera meaning, Its not exactly a distraction...... It is attached to his mask or possibly a head strap.... he obviously knows its going to video first person shots..... The others had to keep an eye on the camera, make sure it didn't float away, always taking pictures.... THAT becomes a distraction.
Did these clowns realize you saved their lives? My God, 145 ft with 700 ft lbs and 400ft lbs of air left!! I'm a diver so I uinderstand the critical nature of this video!
Wow. Aside from your crazy units (I dive metric, makes life so much easier), this is quite impressive work on your part. While everyone is responsible for his own safety, and a buddy is important, it would be great if more people were rescue divers as well.
They looked scared at the end. serves them right. Hopefully they both learned from this huge error. Good job keeping an eye on people for their safety and protection, it means you actually give a shit. Gaurdian Angel you are. Peace.
Great intervention, well done

congrats for saving the rookies,, I too have been in that situation and had my reg taken by a paniced diver @ 160'. Dive master should have been reported at the least,,

People often think of diving as a "past-time" or occasional sport, and forget that it is an activity that can get you killed if not done properly.

how does he know 700 psi is approximately 3mins of air at 150 feet? is there a formula?
Kokoda144 8 months ago
@Kokoda144 yeah, There is a dive chart that has all the calculations on it. The "time" of air you have left is dependent on you depth because the deeper you are = the more the air is compressed, therefore each breath at a greater depth used more air. This is why you need advanced certifications to dive at that depth. I cant post a link, but its called a "dive table", google it.

I hope the divemaster was reported and those 2 idiots smacked up side their heads. Divers such as those two are the reason government regulations are being proposed. Pay attention and know your limits, there is no such thing as an unlimited air supply tank!!

Thankfully you did not get injured while saving these two!!!!!
People do not realize the risks involved in diving beyond your limits!!
They are very lucky that someone with the proper training was around that day!

SrQueque 1 year ago
Good work mate! Responsibility is essential key to safety!!! And if those two would run out of air it would not be not just their life that they would put in danger, they would even put evreyone rescuer that would have to try save thems life in danger! To save two lifes underwater alone is close to imposible alone! If they had runned out of air and started to panic!

Above or below I like to think we all have it in us to help someone in stress! Most of us would live the rest of their lives living in guilt if we turn our back , some lives change with the demons of guilt haunting them . Its such a twist when you do help, you sleep way better,People respect you as you do yourself.

Damn fools. I hope they know they are lucky to be alive. should find there instructor and take away there ability to teach.
goneyellow 1 year ago
@goneyellow

He should have put his down way earlier and been more focused on his divers to begin with!

kenm323 1 year ago
@kenm323 He isn't holding his camera meaning, Its not exactly a distraction...... It is attached to his mask or possibly a head strap.... he obviously knows its going to video first person shots..... The others had to keep an eye on the camera, make sure it didn't float away, always taking pictures.... THAT becomes a distraction.
YTviewer118 1 year ago
@kenm323 OH My mistake hahaha, I only realized he was in fact holding the camera when he let go... wow, Yes you are correct.

Lehmann108 1 year ago

Peace.
