I personally suspect that religion and culture does influence human consciousness in duration of the afterlife process. Culturally familiar entities would be most suitable and effective means of fulfilling a purpose with any particular person or soul that experiences the afterlife. However, I suspect some aspects of the afterlife process is natural because everyone experiences a separation of body, the tunnel and what they'll encounter at the other end.
