So what if they aren't true battle techniques? It never hurts to practice more flashy moves, if you familiarize yourself with your weapon so well that you can practice like this then more practical moves will be that much easier. I have a wooden naginata that I practice with in a similar manner.
Yari is the real battlefield weapon from horseback to ashigari. The battlefield sword was the tachi which is pretty much a katana with ornate fittings worn edge down. The older blades are more curved and have the signature on the opposite side of the nakago then the katana. The katana developed during the edo period as more of a street "dueling" weapon to be drawn on foot quicker. Many sword schools opened up since there was no more battlefield warfare to hone their technique.
in the beginning of the samurai the katana was a secondary weapon it was archer on horse and naginata although the samurai felt a spiritual bonding with the sword and a liking so towards the end when hand to hand was growing more and more useless the katana was very much more practiced than any other weapon so when you talk bad about the naginata calling it a womens weapon just remember it was the beginningof the samurai
Thanks 4the background. I don't really consider these sticks anything more than toys that I enjoy playing with:)
Things will be what they are regardless of my recognition for them.
I can't see anything wrong with a "weapon" being called a woman's weapon.
A woman would make good use of balance and become more fluid to compensate for a lack of strength. Also she would be less likely to take pointless risks by giving in to a testosterone induced "rage".
Ok, I know I posted before but I gotta tell you something. I started using this tecnique in my sparring bouts with people and I found it pretty effective in what it's ment to do. You can actually do this in a fight (the naginata part.) but you gotta keep momentum with the spins and controle only controle direction. otherwise keeping it moving is a very good idea.
all you need to do is practice a few moves over and over again. that is 15-20 minutes every day. ok, maybe just 10 min/day. but make it a daily habit. keep it simple; only a couple of pleasant moves. after a few months you'll be able to perform them really really fast and with less and less injuries to yourself and the environment:) then you will get a feeling of understanding "how" movement works for you& everything will seem comfortable and natural:)
Even though you stated that this isn't very combat capable, how often do you see people fighting with sticks and swords nowadays?
I think this is a very good video for showing your skill. It was done very well, nice spins, nice form, and good footwork. I do some weapons (bo, nunchucks, tonfa, sai, dual short swords), and I think you know what you are doing and can do it very well. Keep it up!!!
Is your staff blue so it looks like Kilik's Duel Rod?? Haha. =p
Very good work here, sir. It's good that you're honest and show your mistakes, too. Practice is practice. And while this doesn't have a lot of combat application, your skill is very admirable.
BEAUTIFUL, def. worth watching. Im trying to become a ninja but im only an apprentice and i gotta say this is sometinhg i gotta try. Teach me more!!! :)
Love the first song (you're right, didn't know them tho!), and I'm especially interested in the bo. You certainly have my respect, sir! And jealousy! :) The bo is so fascinating. I wonder how a bo-user would approach combat with a katana or other kind of sword-user. Is it even possible? I ended up here by searching and trying to find out!
I am personaly a naginata user myself. This is actually pretty acurate for a bo. Only one change that i think i could offer would be to, instead of relentless assult and flurrishes to keep them off balence, try a more stationary aproch with higher defncive capabilities and strike when they leave themselves open after a parried attack. As far as swordsmanship goes. I havent the slightest idea how to use one. Im just now learning reten jetsuken.
if you find yourself off balnce just crouch soon as possible(even if it is only for a 1/2 second)o and i find most people concentrate only on their weapon,so,attack them pretending to be defenseless, and, when they parry(or block)chop or punch at them away from their weapon.and a bo held right can mimic a sword.
I agree with this statment entirely and honestly,(and sadly) you are all to right. when people get a weapon in a fight they forget that their feet and hands are just as deadly.
thx 4 the interest, guys. Jujutsu would b the way 2 go 4 disarming opponents. But I think it would be a better world if everybody just forgot we can use our body 2 harm others. Best thing 2 do is avoid all fights, most of them end up hurting you or those around you. keep safe guys.
yes my kenpo master told me "first, try to verbaly escape, second,if that fails, physhicaly escape, third,if that fails, disarm them and escape, and finally,if all else fails, only then MUST you fight."
well, if loosing a fight means getting punched in the face & telling the other guy he won, & if winning means breaking one of his fingers, I'd say the best way 2 go is apologizing 4 whatever mess u r into, & convince them u r 2 tired 2 put up a fight anyway. Most bullies would b satisfied with just proving 2 their friends how tough they r. If u r robbed at knife point or smth 4 the love of god just hand over the wallet & even your youtube password if need b.
Actually, you change the footwork a tad, keep the staff movements mainly the same, changed the angles and arm movements a little and that staff portion would be ok in a fight. Get rid of the turns in the sword portion, and add a few more uppercuts and you got urself a good chance in a sword fight
ya... u are right that style wont work in a real sword fight but its a pretty awesome sword dance... im not sure about the naginata part my sis does naginata so ill have to ask her opinion since i take iaido and kendo.
If u want 2 learn something of the sort It's really easy2 get a feeling 4it and it has nothing to do with fighting (you don't try2 defeat anyone but you try2 enjoy your own movements) just find a couple of moves that come naturally 2u and practice them over and over till others derive from them.

i have to agre youre doing verry nice, but i think if youre fighting you can better hold your spear/glafie whit 2 hands, and keep watching you enermie(s) instand of the weapon(or did i see that wrong?). you have a good control over it but maby (it is a advice) move your legs faster and.. its a idee.. turn around him/her.
I totally agree. That's really good advice, thank you for the consideration. About multiple enemies; turning around (circling) them is a must, I think.
This video is sooo good, but has so few views. Seems like theres hardly anyone interested in improvised martial arts. People should learn that they can reach a lot if they only believe in themselves.
thx. the way I see it, ppl can have fun if they believe in themselves, but if they want to archive something they should double that with hard work&dedication. I'm just too lazy to aim higher than having fun:))
That's right, one will need to work hard, but you have to believe in yourself first. And what do you mean by achievements? Don't you think you achieved something?
By achieving I mean going every other day to a dojo and get ranked. Or spending time&money to travel wherever they hold competitions. For me it's just a hobby I love & don't sacrifice anything 4. It might be related to my individuality but because it's not related to my social life I can't really talk about "achieving"[after all, being a specific individual happens by default4all of us]. I don't feel like achieving something because I don't expect from it anything apart some health&fun.
You know, this is one of the few videos I've seen of someone playing around where they didn't claim to legitimately know what they were doing. Good job.
Hey cool i feel the same way about "playing". Cool cool i been playing for about 3 and a half years. You are way better then me lol plus i only really practice with the Bo staff. Anyways nice vid and very nice music ( ANTICRISIS FOR EVER!!!!!!) metallica and godsmack very nice too.
it's more like playing, rather than training [ no dojo , no sensei or trainer- i guess the lack of form points that out] so i've been playing for 5-6 years[not a daily routine. just a healthy hobby i recommend 2 anybody]

hmm i practice naginata for a living and i'll sdmit your not bad with a bo staff (though you'd never win a duel with those kinds of moves)
me and my friend train with real blades every once in awhile
i use naginata and he uses a 'reverse jintachi' (which is also an excellent weapon)
-never train with real blades unless you've SOMEWHAT mastered wood-
