I cannot give an accurate aswere to your question but I can tell you that many centuries ago there were large cats in England as well as all over Europe. They are of course extinct now but there was a time when they were common as were wolves and bears. Also keep in mind that the lion has been a symbol of courage since at least Roman times and England was ruled by Rome at one time. There probably is a connection there someplace.

I mean, sure the USA managed to become independent, but it also lost a lot of troops, a lot of money and Canada swore its Alliance to Britain. We were defeated in America because Lord North finally despaired and chose to take Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown as a final defeat. When he stepped down, the Whigs rushed forward to impose their will on the King, whom they despised. Sensibly, it was decided to let the 13 colonies go in return for the resurrection of trade, commerce & profit.For that reason theTreaty was very generous to the colonies.

We did not defeat the British people in our revolution, the King George III was under a lot of political pressure and realized the colonies in America simply were not worth the bloodshed of British Soldiers. With the French navy also involved he had more important matters to attend to with the French than the "Americans" as they were called before the constitution.

The Treaty of Paris ending the conflict was signed 3 Sep 1783, and after a couple ratifications, the final documents were exchanged in Paris 12 May 1784.
