This is a pretty nice design! Wow. I would have never come up with something like that. But it seems a bit, well, more hard to use I guess. Since you need to have 2 buttons to turn the lights on or off.
Anyhow, nicely done, and if you say it is inspired by another video, you should show us what video it is :). At least in my opinion :)
I could technically make use of some logic gates, but in the trade off of redstone simplicity and neatness vs convenience, I chose redstone simplicity xD.

Though I stopped playing it ever since I began playing Minecraft/Starcraft 2/Team Fortress 2.
Though to be honest with ya, I've been thinking about coming back, seeing as how there is a new community patch.
