It is a marvelous film that helps to develop in us at the same time, a love for the movies as well as for literature. The marriage of cinema and literature has seldom been as fortunate as in this outstanding adaptation of Chejov's masterpiece.

I remember seeing this film at the Academy Cinema when it first came to UK, and it is the only 'costume' picture I have ever seen where the actors didn't seem to be dressed-up but actually the characters in their own clothes and moving as they would have moved at that time - hope I'm making myself clear.

Yes, I remember seeing it there too with my wife to be, 1963? It is a film which has stayed in our memories ever since. It was shown with Haroun Tazieff's film Volcano (which we hadn't gone to see).

@WilliamSuffolk I don't remember Volcano. As I recall, it was shown with a marvellous Indian film called The Music Room - don't know if you've seen that, but it is another film that has stayed in my memory.

"The lady with the dog" was undoubtedly one of the most formative movie experiences of my late teens. It is such a beautiful and balanced film. Every frame is an impressionistic painting; the music is atmospheric and underlines the story (like Nino Rota's music for Fellini's movies) - it is just a small masterpiece. Also it to me has a strange affinity with the best of Jacques Tati's movies, especially "Un jour de fête": a lyrical depiction of the big and little events of human life. Superb.
