  • Guinness always had the best adverts

  • You know how to gauge an advert's effectiveness? By how often you think of the product, or how much it makes you want the product. This ad is both artistically very sound (it's gorgeous, lets face it) but it does the damn job and makes you want (or think of) Guinness. The best ad ever, in my eyes.

  • Epic commetciasdfas I cant fuckin spell you cocksuckers

  • Best advert ever and I don't even drink Guinness

  • fucking SUPERB!

    that is all....

  • nicee

  • Work of art.......amazing add !

  • AD FOR REAL MEN

  • whats that got to do with beer? overrated

  • @wufrudelu

From Wikipedia: "The perfect pint of Draught Guinness is the product of a "double pour", which according to the company should take 119.53 seconds. Guinness has promoted this wait with advertising campaigns such as "good things come to those who wait".

Hence the comparison to surfers waiting for the best wave. Plus, it looks really, really cool.

  • hands down best advert ever

  • voted the N.o.1 best ad of all time by you the viewing public, the list was shown on channel 4's 1100 greatest series

  • super ad

  • Amazing

  • Are they quoting "Moby Dick"?

  • @stratocaster1986able ... inspired by Moby Dick but not directly quoted from it, also from the Walter Crane's painting Neptune's Horses.

  • The best advert ever made. I love it.

  • What if you're just like a thirsty dude? Hahaha

  • For an advert from the 90s -- this was pretty sick.

  • @ziiik0

    Idiot !!

  • THE BEST THING I SAW IN MY LIFE

  • THE BEST THAT I SEE IN MY LIFE

  • Does anyone realize how hypnotic this ad is?

  • @WhisperGarden totally, heart is kinda racing right now

  • Leftfield - Phat Planet

  • " He waits; that's what he does. And I tell you what: tick followed tock followed tick followed tock followed tick... Ahab says, 'I don't care who you are, here's to your dream.' 'Here's to you, Ahab'. And the fat drummer hit the beat with all his heart. Here's to waiting."

  • best advert ever

  • Tick followed tock followed tick followed tock followed tick. Wonderful.

  • wow, dramatic.actiony. i love it!

  • I am a director of 16 years when I started I made no money and nearly quit then Streetspirit came out and it inspired me to carry on, I got stuck in a mundane Agency then surfer came out which inspired me to quit & join a better agency. Ive been thinking about quitting again to chase the mighty dollar in a less creative agency & I saw this ad again & its inspired me to carry on. If i can just once create something half as good as this I will be happy. Jonathan Glazer is a genius.

  • crap teeth, pot belly and baggy knickers.

    Great add for guinness LOL!

  • @shinymoon5 What the horses?

  • Poseidon - God of water and surfaces... horses are sacred to him. His chariot is pulled by horses...

  • i remeber this advert

  • Jonathan Glazer is one of the best director's ever, not just for this advert though, check out the music video to Radiohead's Karma Police, and Jamiroquai's Cosmic Girl and Virtual Insanity, the latter is probably the best music video of all time, all dreamt up and directed by him

  • This is what you feel when you taste Guinness.

  • Talk about overrated...

  • I don't like this ad. I guess its just "too deep" for me.

  • @wiseye61

    lol too deep? how?

  • The best 92 seconds of video we'll ever see.

  • 1;04 when it goes silent, where it left you with yourself, at that point you understand what you realy feel about yourself, if it feels weird lonely or gay, then you should reconsider your view, wow this is pure genius...

  • I never understood this advert but since becoming a bar man I now understand it. It takes fucking ages to pour a pint of Guinness!

  • @JDWilson92 Did you pour clovers into the head?

  • Amazing ad....one of the best ever

  • You cannot define the greatness of this advertisement. Men who have been waiting their whole lives to ride the perfect wave. They don't want to go too soon which would make the feeling rushed and hasty, but they do not want to go too late in order to find the real thing is not what they thought it would be. They wait and at the end it is all worth it. As they say. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait.

  • ...I think the Irish version is better :/ There isn't all that talking in it...Personally I think that ruins it :/

  • what's the name of this song?

  • @GamezillarRespawn

    Left field-phatt planet

  • @GamezillarRespawn

the song is /watch?v=feD1j8bHAck at least similar

  • oh the extended version :)

  • I love it! There is insane power in that ad.

  • Bring this back on TV I guarantee sales will go up!

  • can anybody tell me why they use "white horses", is it some kind of surfer lingo, or just because it looks cool? Just wondering...

  • @NYC032

white horses are what you call the white frothy bits in choppy waters or at the crest of waves

  • @NYC032 No its an old saying, "the white horses" its basically describing a lot of big white water

  • @NYC032 They did a documentary on the making of this ad a while back, apparently Glazer was inspired by an Illustration of the same thing in a book (May have been an Illustrated version of Moby Dick I can't remember) but it was definitely inspired by a picture in a book of pretty much the same thing

  • the best

  • The people who really made this advert must have been the editing team. The sound cuts and flashes, black & white colour and sound fx. Excellent job - really paid off!

  • @darkembassymusic Its a shame though, that this video file actually has dips in sound.

  • Fantastic.

  • Question Do you want to buy Guiness or go Surfing now?

  • @farmerned6 GUINNESS fuck surfing

  • I WANT THAT SONG/TRACK !

  • @BoTaBLe Leftfield - Phat Planet

  • WTF not even funny bk burger shots commercial was better

  • @thefish649erm... not supposed to be ..... funny?

Ahab says i don't care who you are, here's to your dream

The old sailors return to the bar

    Here's to you Ahab

And the fat drummer hit the beat with all his heart

    Here's to waiting

  • @gnashy2 thanks ! you are the man!

  • Is that Bells Beach?

  • The advert encompasses so many things about life. Joy. Sorrow. Victory. Defeat. Determination. Courage. Teamwork. Friendship. Patience. Passion. All of that in a minute and a half. The best advert ever made. Stunning.

  • Guinness isn't beer you dick it's stout

  • Guinness is the classiest beer in the world.

  • whats the tune called???

  • @EinFuhrer18

    Phat Planet by Leftfield.

  • full info on the ad and a few other Guinness ones: docstoc.c o m/docs/15056851/GUINNESS-SURFER/

  • EPIC. the only way this could be better is if morgan freeman did the voice over. then it would be the best commercial in the world. evar.

  • needs more cowbell

  • Fantastic ad - here's to waiting :)

  • Spoken by Louis Mells, the voiceover comprises of passages from Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Again, the passages were chosen for the 'waiting' theme - the surfers for the wave, Captain Ahab and his crew for their search for the white whale.

He waits; that's what he does.

And I tell you what: tick followed tock followed tick followed tock followed tick...

Ahab says, 'I don't care who you are, here's to your dream.'

    'Here's to you, Ahab'.

And the fat drummer hit the beat with all his heart.

  • this ad is pure genius! i, like so many others, could watch it over and over again. but everyone seems to be interested in the artistic background of it and the soundtrack (which, i have to admit, i found interesting myself)

    BUT

I want to know who the main character is and find out a bit more about him.... does anyone have any leads?

  • @rollerstains These were filmed in Hawaii, at a place called Waimei Bay. It was there where the crew had their first stroke of luck - whilst looking for a nice angle to shoot from, they met their surfer, called enigmatically, 'Rocky'. He, and three of his surfer friends were to be in the advert.

The massive waves only happen a few days each year, and so with camera equipment rigged to jetskis, helicopters and the longboards themselves, the waves were filmed.

  • music sounds like from UNKLE With South

  • Here's to wating : 1 hour drive into Heathrow, 90 mins at the airport, 1 hour 20 min flight, 30 mins at Dublin airport waiting for baggage and a taxi, 30 mins taxi ride to the hotel, 10 mins at hotel freshening up...20 min walk to Oliver St John O Gogarty's....5 mins at the bar to wait to get your first Guiness of the night whilst the band play "whiskey in the jar"..yes, here's to WAITING :-)

  • Ahab is Melville's captain in Moby Dick. This ad is pure poetry in motion. A true masterpiece of visual arts. Kudos to AMV, the best ad agency the whole world has ever known.

  • amazing video....

  • yeah, Glazer channeling Jean-Luc Goddard...

    what an epic line.

  • great ad.

love the one with the old swimmer racing the pour as well.

    top notch

  • top of a Channel 4 poll of the 100 greatest ads, awards:a Golden lion and others, the waves filmed in Waimei Bay- Hawaii, horses- Lipizzaner Stallions from the Spanish riding school of Vienna, comprised passages taken from Herman Melville's Moby Dick

  • name of the song any1?

  • Search YouTube for Leftfield Phat Planet

  • Just the best piece of advertising on tv ever.Great work wether it be CGi or cool photography just enjoy such creative work and the visual effect is stunning.

  • Walter Crane; Neptune's Horses, by way of: Katsushika Hokusai;

    The Great Wave.

  • Think I heard somewhere that foam on the top of waves is called 'white horses', so maybe the inspiration? Lots of elements involved, visual, philosophical, literary, pure genius. DRINK GUINESS!

  • Lol luannexxx17,glad I made you smile.I probably went a bit ott with the post but do you honestly not like this ad?

  • this is the greatest advert in the history of adverts

  • i just fucking love this ad. it's my favourite ad for my favourite beer

  • What's the song?

  • phat planet - leftfield

  • Cheers mate

  • thx man!

  • awesome advert

  • The horses ARE the waves wild and powerful but the guy tamed them, great advert.

  • Hi miss de graaf :P

  • this ad would still be shit hot even without the horses,

  • i think this ad is amazing and i understand it... but i dont understand why the horses are in the waves.

  • It's just a visual metaphor I think, to show how powerful the waves are.

  • Also, the foam you see on the waves are known as 'white horses'. ;)

  • Awesome!

  • what's the name of that song ?

  • Phat Planet by Leftfield

  • thanx, i needed this vid 2 revise 4 ma media exam lol! cheers!

  • Interesting fact, the main guy in the ad wasn't actually a professional surfer but the makers found him sitting under a palm tree one afternoon and coaxed him into being in the ad, Subsequently the surf was 100% perfection that day and he ended up looking really good on the waves.

  • crazyoatmealmansirmiss whatever the fuck. your a spastic if u dont get it. m amazed you can use a computer and not get this, one of the best advertisements ever made......

  • Think it should have ended around 60 seconds then had voice over. Still great. Was this ever on US TV?

  • they purposely had it 90 seconds to show that it takes that long to pour the pint of guiness, but its worth the wait just like the perfect wave the surfers waited 4.

  • that was epic

  • If Carslberg made adverts....

    Oh... ;)

  • LOOL

  • quite possibly the greatest ad ever made!!!!!!!!!!

  • call me crazy, stupid, an idiot, (try to avoid excessive swearing)... i don't get it.
