I would prefer Frank Sinatra's version any day, but this version is the kind you listen to if you're alone on Christmas with a heartache. Sinatra's version is just being far away from loved ones. Nevertheless, this version is outstanding
I listened to this a lot last year during a fairly horrible time. But hey, this year things are looking up. Maybe we'll even have a merry little Christmas this time...
@kaylagaskarth Dear kaylagaskarth, What on earth were you thinking when you were writing that horrible comment? This is one of the most beoutiful covers .. <3
I'm a huge Bright Eyes fan...but I feel this is waaaaaaaay to angsty and emotional for me. Like it's trying to be sentimental so much that it sounds pathetic. Sorry, Conor, but I don't like it.
"During the later periods of Roman history, sun worship gained in importance and ultimately led to what has been called a 'solar monotheism.' Nearly all the gods of the period were possessed of Solar qualities. The feast of Sol and Victus (open unconquered Sun) on December 25th was celebrated with great joy, and eventually this date was taken over by the Christians as Christmas, the birthday of Christ."
I consider myself an AVID Conor Oberst fan, but I have to say, this is NOT a song in which his style is fitting. it's ominous and disingenuously heartbroken. you can disagree, of course.
I've always considered this more the natural intent of the song anyways. Sort of a sad nostalgia. I think if you'd considered it a "happy" Christmas song in the first place, this would seem disconcerting. But that's never how I took it. It's sort of a song about how we make a particular contrivance to be happy at Christmas, but we aren't really happy any other time.
@rohiogerv22 That's a really interesting perspective, and I agree with what you're saying. Still, I find this rendition foreboding and portentous, which I think is unwarranted even with that perspective. Also, his voice sounds to be impersonating sincerity, which is a shock since he's normally so good with empathy. Might just be me.
@IEatCray0ns I feel there's definitely an air of inward struggle; of pain he can express through music that he sees degraded by others' perspective. I believe this song is every inch his style because he reveals pain we don't understand and are mesmerized by. You should listen his Fevers and Mirrors interview. It really conveys the way he sees his fans. And I completely agree with rohiogerv22, but you make a good point about his insincerity. But the idea, I think, is that we never really know.
this song is so beautiful. I'm waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail and i am against listening to music before christmas, but, this doesn't count. :) makes me want to cry
when i first realized that Conor Oberst made a christmas album i was stunned. cause i love 2 things in this world...Conor Oberst & christmas songs....so! the first seconds of this song i was like " oh god..oh god" & right when i heard his first word i started to cry because it was so beautiful. <3
Nope... They were here in October. (EXCELLENT SHOW) He was home for the holidays and played a really small show at a bar in Omaha called the Waiting Room. 215 tickets were sold to the show. It was INCREDIBLE.. Seeing him perform less them 5 feet away from me (i was in the front row) was epic.
Ohhh I'm jealous! That sounds amazing. Yeah, I saw him with Monsters of Folk in Chicago. It was awesome, 3 hours long too. But...I couldn't see their faces I was so far away, haha.
Wow, that must have been one massive bar to fit all those people.
Beautiful, his voice always has been my favorite. This and "it's cool we can still be friends" makes me completely enamored with this man. Maria's voice is also beautiful, adds a fantastic haunting sound to Conor's.
hopefully in a good way?? for a christmas song its depressing, but generally it has more feelin, than most songs...thts wt u meant by tht right??... not tht u.. just now uve heard tht.. r guna go find sum rope, string it round ur neck jump off a chair and hope the worst, i dearly hope. cuz that cover is quite honestly, transcendent, without it trying to be...
This song very strongly hurts me to listen to. And I agree. I think Christmas is a very sad holiday, but just for the idea of the sentimental family experiences and giving of gifts to symbolize love. But I suppose it's all a symbol of growing up to me. Which this song brings out, thus making me very sad.
everything is dead under the snow, the days are filled with being cold, alone and darkness fills the sky. everyone goes to shopping malls giving in to consumerism, buying things off lists of demand forgetting about really thinkin about someone else. ..but this is just my thoughts on winter and christmas. everyone is different;live and let live, you know.

The instruments are great, but the singers, frankly, didn't do it for me. Mostly because they were completely dissonant with each other at random times - it was completely non-musical.
dissonance is a social construct. Chords with notes less than 3 steps apart were considered normal at one time and a fourth or 'perfect' fifth was painful to the ears. Music evolves and should be appreciated for what its attempting to do, not held to some hollow standard.
Actually, no, consonance and dissonance are based on how sound waves interact, and how our ears perceive that interaction. Octaves and perfect fifths are universally pleasing, and augmented fourths and minor seconds are universally displeasing. And those are exactly the kinds of intervals, among others, that this song hit at times. Basic physics and physiology there.
'displeasing' and 'pleasing' are opinions...socially constructed. study the history of music and the intervals once used to make 'pleasing' chords as opposed to what modern musicians have determined is 'pleasing'.
this is the most depressiong christmas song recording ever.
