  • this is the most depressiong christmas song recording ever.

  • maria taylor?

  • : )

  • <3

  • this is too beautiful for words.

  • I would prefer Frank Sinatra's version any day, but this version is the kind you listen to if you're alone on Christmas with a heartache. Sinatra's version is just being far away from loved ones. Nevertheless, this version is outstanding

  • Perfect for the inevitable depression that is Christmas time. Irony at it's finest.

  • 8 people didn't have a merry little Christmas.

  • This always makes me want to sob. Always.

  • Depressing as hell.

  • I listened to this a lot last year during a fairly horrible time. But hey, this year things are looking up. Maybe we'll even have a merry little Christmas this time...

  • Fucking sex.

  • i feel the need to ask- do bright eyes know it's christmas time at all?!

  • Imaginary Heroes!

  • sad...so sad. ;_;

  • This is my favorite version of 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas'. ♫♪

  • i love him and all, don't get me wrong.

but this is just downright scary.

dear conor oberst, WHAT on earth were you thinking.

  • @kaylagaskarth Dear kaylagaskarth, What on earth were you thinking when you were writing that horrible comment? This is one of the most beoutiful covers .. <3

  • @cookiemonsteraphobia to each their own my friend, to each their own.

  • this is so so beautiful. i wouldnt even think of listening to anything else on christmas morning

  • Conor sang this song so beautifully.. but let us remember what CHRISTmas is truly about.

  • I love brighteyes

  • every year i end up back at this album. x

  • I'm a huge Bright Eyes fan...but I feel this is waaaaaaaay to angsty and emotional for me. Like it's trying to be sentimental so much that it sounds pathetic. Sorry, Conor, but I don't like it.

  • @ChasHolling really? I'm here with my cat and hot cocoa and it's really nice for christmas eve

  • best x mas music ever

  • I need to get this album ASAP!!! what a gem! :)

  • Christmas is a really sad time for lots of people, lots of memories of better times...

  • ;_;

  • Why isn't it on iTunes? :(

  • @ooberzombies

You can buy it from Conor's record label.

    saddle - creek .com

  • Conor has apparently not let his heart be light lol

  • I consider myself an AVID Conor Oberst fan, but I have to say, this is NOT a song in which his style is fitting. it's ominous and disingenuously heartbroken. you can disagree, of course.

  • @IEatCray0ns

I've always considered this more the natural intent of the song anyways. Sort of a sad nostalgia. I think if you'd considered it a "happy" Christmas song in the first place, this would seem disconcerting. But that's never how I took it. It's sort of a song about how we make a particular contrivance to be happy at Christmas, but we aren't really happy any other time.

  • @rohiogerv22 That's a really interesting perspective, and I agree with what you're saying. Still, I find this rendition foreboding and portentous, which I think is unwarranted even with that perspective. Also, his voice sounds to be impersonating sincerity, which is a shock since he's normally so good with empathy. Might just be me.

  • @IEatCray0ns I feel there's definitely an air of inward struggle; of pain he can express through music that he sees degraded by others' perspective. I believe this song is every inch his style because he reveals pain we don't understand and are mesmerized by. You should listen his Fevers and Mirrors interview. It really conveys the way he sees his fans. And I completely agree with rohiogerv22, but you make a good point about his insincerity. But the idea, I think, is that we never really know.

  • @laymed0wnn fevers and mirrors interview isnt him. its a caricature of him by some guy from the faint making fun of conors depressive nature

  • the chello <3<3<3

  • Never mind found it!

  • I've heard this song before. Does anyone know what show or movie it's from? Thanks! :)

  • this song is so beautiful. I'm waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail and i am against listening to music before christmas, but, this doesn't count. :) makes me want to cry

  • This album is killer.. for christmas

  • when i first realized that Conor Oberst made a christmas album i was stunned. cause i love 2 things in this world...Conor Oberst & christmas songs....so! the first seconds of this song i was like " oh god..oh god" & right when i heard his first word i started to cry because it was so beautiful. <3

  • @Reiki101 here here

  • @Reiki101 really?

  • I love this song, it gives me shivers and actually makes me tear up literally every time.

  • This song was in Imaginary Heroes

    so sad

  • going to see Conor tonight in Omaha. Hope he does some Christmas stuff...

  • are you seeing him with Monsters of Folk?

  • Nope... They were here in October. (EXCELLENT SHOW) He was home for the holidays and played a really small show at a bar in Omaha called the Waiting Room. 215 tickets were sold to the show. It was INCREDIBLE.. Seeing him perform less them 5 feet away from me (i was in the front row) was epic.

  • Ohhh I'm jealous! That sounds amazing. Yeah, I saw him with Monsters of Folk in Chicago. It was awesome, 3 hours long too. But...I couldn't see their faces I was so far away, haha.

Wow, that must have been one massive bar to fit all those people.

  • dishearteningly beautiful :

  • conor oberst is gifted beyond belief. he brings out emotions i did not know i had the possiblity of feeling.

  • this is ironically the saddest christmas song EVER

  • I love how it leads in to Twas the Night Before Christmas

  • incredible

  • most beautiful

  • stunning, the saddest christmas song

  • nearly brought me to tears.

  • it amazes me how his voice can bring out the sorrow of any song i can never make it through this without crying

  • Beautiful, his voice always has been my favorite. This and "it's cool we can still be friends" makes me completely enamored with this man. Maria's voice is also beautiful, adds a fantastic haunting sound to Conor's.

  • me too, It's Cool.. is the song that got me obsessed with this incredible man

  • conor and maria sound so beautiful together.

  • oh my god conor oberst is god this is the best most beautiful cover of this song i ever heard

  • It's such a beautiful song, but so sad considering its a Christmas song..its still beautiful nonetheless.

  • Comment removed

  • hopefully in a good way?? for a christmas song its depressing, but generally it has more feelin, than most songs...thts wt u meant by tht right??... not tht u.. just now uve heard tht.. r guna go find sum rope, string it round ur neck jump off a chair and hope the worst, i dearly hope. cuz that cover is quite honestly, transcendent, without it trying to be...

  • @jcrist lol!!! but its so good

  • I never realized how sad it was

  • this really is extremely beautiful.

  • this was on imaginary heroes. shame they played it at a new years party lol.

  • thanks!

  • when was this released?

  • xD I'm probably gonna get a thumbs down too but that made me laugh so hard even though i like this song

  • if you're gay

  • LOl theres a video making fun of conor and his christmas cd. i think its great though, love Conor.

  • omg i fucken cried a bit <3

  • : )

  • This has been my favorite christmas song for years, and sang by Conor makes me tear up! so beautiful!

  • gosh their voices are soo sweet together! i wish they would release a duet album together!

  • Thats Maria Taylor singing along with him?

    Damn...

    weird....

  • this song has always been my favorite Christmas song, and sung by Conor makes it even better<3

  • this song hurts.

  • This song very strongly hurts me to listen to. And I agree. I think Christmas is a very sad holiday, but just for the idea of the sentimental family experiences and giving of gifts to symbolize love. But I suppose it's all a symbol of growing up to me. Which this song brings out, thus making me very sad.

  • either way; happy holidays and make the best of it,i guess shinesinpines.

  • First!

  • everything is dead under the snow, the days are filled with being cold, alone and darkness fills the sky. everyone goes to shopping malls giving in to consumerism, buying things off lists of demand forgetting about really thinkin about someone else. ..but this is just my thoughts on winter and christmas. everyone is different;live and let live, you know.

what do you think about this season/christmas

  • christmas isn't a happy holiday in reality. it's actually depressing more then anything else

  • this song wasn't written to be happy.

have you seen judy garland sing it?

she moved crowds to tears with this and it was said to be the saddest christmas carol ever written

  • Who said christmas was happy for everyone?

  • dissonance is a social construct. Chords with notes less than 3 steps apart were considered normal at one time and a fourth or 'perfect' fifth was painful to the ears. Music evolves and should be appreciated for what its attempting to do, not held to some hollow standard.

  • Actually, no, consonance and dissonance are based on how sound waves interact, and how our ears perceive that interaction. Octaves and perfect fifths are universally pleasing, and augmented fourths and minor seconds are universally displeasing. And those are exactly the kinds of intervals, among others, that this song hit at times. Basic physics and physiology there.

  • 'displeasing' and 'pleasing' are opinions...socially constructed. study the history of music and the intervals once used to make 'pleasing' chords as opposed to what modern musicians have determined is 'pleasing'.

  • terribly beautiful.

  • das ryte my nikka hahaaa

  • he makes it so beautiful!

  • is it just me? or is the picture being zoomed in on?

  • i was thinking that it moved but it seemed like whenever i focused on it, it stopped lol

  • hahahah whenever i look at a stationary picture on a computer screen that happens to me

    acid flashback?

  • can you play this at my funeral, if i die during christmas? utterly amazing.

  • thank you for uploading this! I've been looking for this song. i heard it in the movie Imaginary Heroes. :D

  • i dont know why, but when he sings it, it sounds sad. i mean, all the other covers are happy. i like this one the best^^

  • It's kind of silly actually, every song he sings sounds sad, but it somehow makes me ridiculously happy. :]
