The British lost a total of 23,000 men in the whole of the Caribbean alone in 5 years 1793-98 army, navy and militia vast majority to disease probably only 1,000 died in combat or from wounds.. These being in Jamaica Haiti and captured French and Spanish territories ie Martinique and Trinidad..etc..

In most of the major battles of the Peninsular War, the British won few major battles by themselves. Such as Talavera, Barossa, Fuentos De Onoro, Salamanca, Albuera, etc, etc..

@Freez57fr In fact it was the other way round, the Portugese army hid behind the British, who trained them, built a fortress to protect Lisbon (Torres Vedras) and ultimately led the coalition in the Peninsula war. Spain would have been crushed if it weren't for Britain's intervention - quite gracious when you think that just a few years before they had been enemies

Britain captured important parts of Haiti but due to loss of disease and the fact that Spain switched sides had to leave. The fact that L'Overture defeated a British invasion is a myth.
And the Convention of Cintra is a capitulation and was controversial because we were too kind to the captured French.

Wellington was in trouble with London for that decision, and two of his generals (I can't remember their names) were court martialed and they cannot serve in the military again.

The British lost a total of 23,000 men in the whole of the Caribbean alone in 5 years 1793-98 army, navy and militia vast majority to disease probably only 1,000 died in combat or from wounds.. These being in Jamaica Haiti and captured French and Spanish territories ie Martinique and Trinidad..etc..
