Darren, what I don't understand is why not use a more powerful Linux distro? Personally, Gentoo would be the *only* choice for such a project in my shop.
I remember the flying toasters! Gonna try running Win98?!? Well if you do you might need KernelEX available at sourceforge. It allows older Win95/98/ME/NT to run WinXP and higher applications that would not normally work. Just throwing it out there!
Actually I used to do that all the time where I used to work. I just did not like his allegedly snide remark suggesting he needed to use MS instead of Linux. I have much respect for what Darren does. I would not challenge someone if I did not think they could do better.
Don't be afraid to have shit hardware. The hardware from the late 90's/early 00's has it's uses. For example my clock is a POS, single core 1.1 Ghz AMD Athlon XP running a Samurize config. Even the software is hella old, but it serves it's purpose! And has been doing so for the past 4 years!
@TheRealSylar92 Bravo. I agree. Still use pII's for servers till ide's are dead. Then on to a san and use gpxe to boot them. There are still linux distros (as well as bsd) supporting the older hardware. I have an old compaq 1g Athlon that runs compiz with all the fancy effects very easily. MS fanboys can not believe it's real. I may do a video and put it up if I get time.
If it was set up right. you would not be having those issues. Thought of using Compiz and show what linux can really do???? Sorry but, demo was so lame.
@TheComputoman He's still testing/setting up you dingle-berry. Whens the last time YOU set up this many monitors on one box. Stick with xmas lights, nimrod.
i think u should do the flying coasters.. one.. that would be funny as hell.. man.. but try out the windows 7 on the 6 montiors .. and see what u like.. i can't wait for the season 9 this month
When I first saw the machine with the three graphic cards inside, I thought you went for a CUDA cluster, but in that case you are probably better of with one big card instead of those three small ones.
The flying toasters were bad ass!!

Hey! If you're gonna go 98, at least get 98SE. It's my favourite Microsoft OS (Actually true).
Really hope Win7 slows it down, Linux (or 98SE) FTW!

There's no need to be hardware snob. Just use whatever gets the job done. That sempron isn't a bad little chip for everyday stuff.
