my african grey flew away because i thought its cool to teach her to free flight but i was lucky to find her again after 4 days. my advise is don't give your bird a chance to fly because it will fly away
@BBirdbrain Yes I still have the bird. I moved to Minnesota and haven't yet flown Manzi outside this year. Maybe in the next couple of months. You can see updates on Manzi at manziworld (dot) blogspot (dot) com
I did extensive recall training indoors first. He is a flock animal so it isn't in their nature to fly away if they know how to return to you. When birds fly away it is usually because they are not well trained to fly and they aren't sure how to return or are scared.
Good work! Actually, there are many reasons for which a bird can fly off. Raptors, harley's, dogs, the list is huge. Focus your training to include recovery flights and you'll be ahead of the game.
Yes, you're right, they can become scared and fly off. Especially African Greys. I am teaching Manzi how to deal with those situations. Right now I am working on teaching him to climb down a tree if he is too scared to fly down. We still have a long way to go.

Just realized this in a cpl years old..
Do you still have the bird?
Any new videos showing off his capabilities?
I'd love to hear/see how you solved problems along the way..

This is probably a stupid question, but I don't know anything about these guys. Aren't you afraid he'll fly away and get lost?
