  • im sad, this kinda helps

  • gives me chills

  • unfortunately the most brilliant artists are also the most insane....

  • I'm curious why so many people are thumb-upping that he killed himself. Wouldn't you all rather have his genius still around? I wish he could have gotten the help he needed, not "went out like a boss."

  • Should be sitting on a throne, not a crappy little chair.

  • @JayMoyles He works that crappy little chair like no one else.

  • This is the best emotional ballad of what it feels like to be a heroin junkie. Beautiful shit.

  • R.I.P. Elliott Smith.

  • supreme guitar technique,

  • How could anyone dislike this? Honestly.

  • Thumbs up if you came here because Elliott Smith took over your life with his music.

  • he was probably an amazing guy. i wish i could have been lucky enough to know him

  • damn you people, just listen to the music stop analyzing and criticizing. Just listen.....

  • Not saying Elliott Smith DIDN'T have any psychiatric/substance abuse issues, but that really doesn't apply here. He's CLEARLY tapping his left foot along with the music--it's not just some nervous tic. If you actually listen to the rhythm of the guitar it's obvious.

  • i love you elliott!! my only regret is that i was too young to see you live back when you were still "able to perform." :( i hope if there somehow is a heaven that i can meet you and persuade you to play a song for me just once. :) <3

  • what a lovely guy for fucking with crack and heroin on a daily basis.

  • Every time I use opiates and listen to this song I get depressed. Great song.

  • Once your a junkie...life is not the same...no matter how long youve been clean..

  • @97kills very very true ... and i been clean a long time ...

  • beautiful song. such a shame

  • @htownallday281 Story of my life.

I wouldn't call this song helpful, but more explanatory on a personal level.

  • Look at his left leg, he always seemed nervous during interviews/shows, and that's a big sign of anxiety, constantly shaking your leg like that. I have terrible anxiety, and I do it all the time without even noticing. And no he isn't doing it to help with the rhythm of the song or anything, they're uncorrelated.

  • @htownallday281 With respect, theres a big difference between anxiety and nervousness. That sometimes happens to me during a open mic night spot. There are tonnes of ways anxiety can mannifest itself; Beethoven and Kurt Cobain both had stomach problems that a lot of profeesional put down to anxiety. Not saying your wrong, just hoping to show you a different angle.

  • @TheAppletaffy Oh I know there's a difference, but there's no denying that Elliott was depressed, and anxiety always comes a long with depression(and the other way around). There's also something called restless leg syndrome, which makes people do exactly what he's doing, but I'm almost positive that anxiety had a part to do with him shaking his leg like that. Even when I'm not THAT anxious(very seldom) I find myself shaking my leg worse than he does in the video, it sucks.

  • <3 ----that is all

  • gr8 artist

  • im certainly not saying anything groundbreaking here. but it is definitely about heroine...just so beautifully done. what a poet.

  • im certainly not saying anything groundbreaking here. but it is definitely about heroine...just so beautifully done. what a poet.

  • Stabbed himself in the heart with a knife completely sober. This mofo even went out like a boss.

  • @ihaveacar agreed, most unpussy way to kill oneself ever.

  • @ihaveacar I'm all down for boss'n and shit but i just can't joke like about Elliott Smith and I'm one of the most sarcastic jokers you'll ever meet hey...

  • @ihaveacar The police said there was reason to believe his girlfriend stabbed him but there wasn't enough evidence.

  • @ihaveacar stabbed himself twice!

  • @ihaveacar No hesitation wounds, possible defence lacerations on his palms...His girlfriend, who later revealed that she was after money claimed they fought, she took a shower, came out when he screamed, and pulled the knife from his chest. Consider her story as it might be used to cover a murder. She explained the scream, her prints on the knife, and why she took a shower. I'm not big on rock star death conspiracies, but Elliott's is one of the most compelling. His fam isn't so sure about Chiba

  • @ihaveacar blah blah blah

  • @ihaveacar

    yeah. sure.

it definitely couldn't have been his girlfriend,

  • @ihaveacar Smith was a passion, extremely intelligent person. He had trouble socially integrading into society and it caused him much angst. This does not taint his brilliance in anyway. He truly was an awesome, unique, and special person.

  • @ihaveacar Fuck you.

  • @ihaveacar sober..not sure. I know he was a pretty big heroin addict. his exit was Emo to the T.

  • @TheFunkytownGotcha He had been sober and clean for quite a while when he killed himself. He was tortured and loved a woman that was just no good for him.

  • @schwagnot Not true. He was far from being clean and sober. On top of being a alcoholic, heroin addict and being clinically depressed ...the girl didn't help matters. Clean and Sober people living the good life don't turn a chefs blade sideways and ram it into your rib cage to experience one of the most painful ways to die.

  • @TheFunkytownGotcha Get your facts right. Elliott had been sober for nearly a year before he died.

    Fucking prick.

  • @sachababs Proof or GTFO! read the reports about him leading up to it. Including the toxicology reports dumb fuck.

  • @sachababs He had 4 different types of Drugs within his system..Dumb Fuck.

  • @TheFunkytownGotcha "Toxicology reports showed only legally prescribed antidepressant and ADHD medications in normal amounts."

That's from squidoo.com/musician-elliott-smith if you don't believe me, but is a widely known fact. Yet another example of why Elliott Smith uploads should have comments disabled. It's people like this that don't deserve to have a voice really.

I don't talk to idiots. So this is my last comment.

  • @TheFunkytownGotcha I re-iterate. "Toxicology reports showed only legally prescribed antidepressant and ADHD medications in normal amounts."

    You idiot.

I'll let the youtube viewers decide which of us is correct.

  • @ihaveacar I think his girlfriend murdered him.

  • @ihaveacar killing yourself is not going out like a boss.

  • @bulmer13 No it's not. We miss you Elliot.

  • this video made me realise how powerful music can be

  • This is filmed at The Town Hall in NYC, Feb 22, 2000. I was at this show! Confirmed the video on songkick.com.

  • I love this song, I discovered it in The royal Tenenbaums. Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Kurt Cobain... the great songwriters of the 90´s. These art its so Sad, and they all died very young. We have to learn. The existence can be sad but also it can be very "sublime". And dont forget, drugs are not a good thing, and the "underworld" of drugs is even worst. Kurt and Elliott were surrounded by very bad people (obviously, they have good friends also).

Take a look at Werner Herzog films.

  • @xmfdibujito I couldn't have said it better myself. Smith, Buckley, and Cobain were brilliant. It's sad none of them can be around now to continue spreading their talent..

  • @MrBlackblend you and MYxLOVExOFxBEER got some very interesting dialogue going on here...

  • decent remix of Needle in the hay... /watch?v=4BcAVJTBCV8

  • love your videos arboria! this is a good version

  • Notice how the crowd is dead silent.

  • @zmoney682 that is awesome...

  • @zmoney682 It's exactly the way it should be always...

  • @zmoney682 It's called respect, bro.

  • @zmoney682 The way it should be.

  • Drinking from Puddles during the mid '90's was one of the best public radio programs ever!

  • people need to resist their urge to dislike this video. elliott smith was a great, troubled, beautiful man and just leave it at that.

let him play his music, wherever that may be.

  • 30 people cant find the needle and 1328 people understand that we will always miss elliott

  • @crazz3y And one person is sick and tired of people making stupid comments referring to the number of like Vs dislikes.

    -Fail

  • @90Graff lmao right

  • Do you know when and where it was recorded?

  • so beautiful.

  • I love how this is as big a venue that he would ever play, he looks like a kid at a talent show pouring his heart out

  • 30 retards!!!!!

  • amazing song, great performance.

  • You can almost hear the pain in his voice.

  • please click my name and check my version of this song, i wanna see if i'm good enough to continue making covers, if people like them. i can't paste the link but copy this and put after youtube.com. watch?v=cMUoz74LaVY

    thanks heaps, :)

  • @chennaprateep Um, hi. Do you think you could repost this comment with coma's between the song names? Because I had the same question as this person, but I can't make out the names in your post...

Please? And thank you, very much. =)

  • @yellowpowerranger94 Angeles, Ballad of Big Nothing, Waltz #2, No Name #4, Baby Britian, Son of Sam, Everything Reminds ME of her are some of my favorites off the top of my head

  • @JHALL0456 :) thank you too,

  • it reminds me that it doesnt fucking matter in spades...u filthy cocksuckers

  • 30 people don't get real music/songwriting

  • @insision It's extremely hard to believe that 30 people honestly gave this a "thumbs down". What the hell?

  • amazing song

  • I will learn to play this damn it "needle in hay"

  • I'm not one to listen to lyrics, I just tend to try to absorb the feelings exuded by the performer.. if that makes sense!!

I didn't learn about Elliot Smith until it was too late - It's a tragic waste; although what he's left behind is undeniably beautiful and something for us to treasure.

  • He had so much more....

  • i can't even watch this without crying.. i can't even imagine how the people who were actually close to him feel when they see this

  • hey everyone this is humanity at its best but when u wanna checkout someone else's point of view check out daniel johnson or the upsetters im am truly sorry for h but everyone self medicates and this music powerful or just smoke weed with me and two maybe three huggs relax..... everyday above ground is a good day right im not joking either why don't we just feed and tell the children the truth and the world will get better day by day thanks for the post

  • the 29 people who disliked this should eat shit. no crazy lights or extravagant performance, just a genius with his guitar.

  • oh my god i love this song cause it raiy tells you there are worse things to lose

  • Elliott Smith is John Lennon's talent in a Sean Lennon style...

  • so simple but but not at all at the same time. elliot died on my birthday.. weird..

  • @hobbsmusic mine too. my 18th. i had discovered him just a few months earlier...

  • havent used for 20 days or so, miss you man, see you when my song is over

  • @cmfishburn congratulations on the 20 days....keep up the good fight!

  • @TripNDazy thanks it means alot

  • @cmfishburn word dude im at 6 weeks elliott smith has always helped me when i try to get clean

  • @cmfishburn good man!

  • @cmfishburn hang in there. it took a long time for me to get clean but now it'll be 2 whole years since i've used this February. never thought i could make it this long.

  • I like the acoustic version better than the electric because his voice is more somber in this and thats the style that i like to picture the song in.

  • @randomcrackers But then again i love anything he does.

  • not bad but he's no kermit

  • i love his music but i do listen to it when im depressed. sucks that hes gone. so talented

  • You her hand on his arm, hay stack charm around your neck. Strung out and thin, calling some friend trying to cash some check. He's acting dumb. That's what you've come to expect.

  • Goodbye DP, you'll never know what a loss you were to me <3

  • goodbye dp <3

  • Excellent job! Blessings from Rose

  • anyone know what kind of pickups he uses?

  • @FreebieMe44 It's actually deep depression that makes his guitar sound like that. But I think if you look at this video it's just an acoustic, not an electric acoustic. The mic is probably picking up a bit of the guitar

  • Well, you could put basic info like where and when this video was shot. Obviously, the who and what are most important, but sometimes people will wonder where and when music is made.

  • This is one of my favorite songs; so deep and gloomy, and makes me confortable and relaxed. It's like velvet for my ears. A real shame Elliot is dead, he was awesome.

  • i really do love you more every day of my life

  • He breaks my heart then serenades the hurt away..... all in one song.... man he was a genius....

  • Some people need to learn how to spell.

  • 6th and Powell is in Portland

  • He changed the lyrics to show how versital his lyrics can actualy be

  • @CHEDDERBEN13

or maybe he wanted to say something different

  • @wanderings0ul

    word!!!

  • solid description.

by the time i figured out who elliott smith was, he was already dead. I wasn't even a teenager when he died so i guess it didn't matter anyways. I wish I could have seen him live, though.

  • mannn i sure wish i was old enough to have seen elliott perform before his death hes my fav singer

  • i dont know what it is but i find sg very relaxing in the vibration of his voice.

  • One of my favourite songs ever !

  • "I can't beat myself, and I don't want to talk, i am taking the cure, so I can be quiet wherever I want, So leave me alone, You ought to be proud that I am getting good marks." My life makes so much sense when I hear this. Thank you.

  • Your addicted to heroin? 2:25 to 3:07 is about scoring some dope.

  • as a reply, the cure may be of dope, and it may be of something elliot smith only knows of. but it may also be of something that reaches out to the listener, and captivates the audience. i thought it went well with amphetamine. the cure and getting good marks was something that made sense. good looks.

  • Your addicted to heroin? 2:25 to 3:07 is about scoring some dope.

  • well no shit.

  • well no shit

  • absolutely fucking brilliant. this man has inspired me to pick up the guitar.

  • @ariveronique

    The same here bro:D

  • This song is so dark: I love all the negatives of people who just don't get that they will soon be dust or worm food.

Just be kind to people and do little harm while you have the chance.

  • @MYxLOVExOFxBEER well put

  • @MYxLOVExOFxBEER do more harm when u have the chance

  • wow, you are so deep and cool.

  • @MYxLOVExOFxBEER i love you.

  • @MYxLOVExOFxBEER

Everyone knows we are worm food to one extent. It takes a child to know that we will die. It takes a man to know what it means to live. To think that you know what death is and what life is to each individual is comical and ignorant.

  • We are all dust so shoot heroin to appreciate life! BS. I like this song as it expresses a feeling and an emotion but that is all. It is a failed rationale. It is the rationale of resentment and giving into chemical dependency rather than just living life and enjoying timelessness.

  • @p51abc Hi, I don't think that you took my comment quite as it was meant, especially what I wrote about being kind to people...

Glad that it amused you though.

    Good luck for the future.

  • another dead hero... rip

  • Comment removed

  • can someone pleeeeaaseee do a tut. on how he plays this?!?!

  • any ideas why he changed "head down to toes" to "everyone knows"?

  • elliott did a lot of stuff different live. either forgot lyrics and made them up on the spot, or sang parts of earlier versions/earlier versions.

  • @IamLouder ,

i noticed that too. i have no idea. i'm curious as well. if anyone knows please comment!

  • So much talent.

  • This song is beyond describable. Live, it's even better.

  • RIP Elliott Smith

  • elliott smith is awesome... beutiful music.

  • flawless..

  • i and a couple other humans i slightly know took the bus to 6th and pal in portland in the dark and i sung the biggest lie with my guitar on a flat peice of wood in some grass

  • @samesamething ,

    wait...what?

  • its in portland? how do u know that, u live there?

  • 6th and powell?

  • San Fransisco.

  • I am thankful for Elliott Smith and his music and all that he and his music inspire me to do.

thank you elliott, we all love you

  • I love this brilliant mind, his music gets me through a lot of shit.

    R.I.P Elliott

    You'll never be forgotten.

  • @purpledrohaze777 man u aint lyin. I had some rough battles a short while ago and it really made me come back to life. Unfortunately it wont bring elliott back to life.

  • that's him dude.

you can tell by the classic big black leather bracelet.

however it does seem he stole his haircut from a young boy in this video...

  • I <3 elliot, will always live in all of us through his music

  • brilliant

  • Tears me down every time.

  • Ah this is GREAT!

  • he lived everyday in agony, always in his mind.. he's happy now.

  • Sweet Elliott

  • May beauty be above me, may beauty be behind me may beauty be all aournd me , may seriousnes ends where happienss begins so I'll now where i am. Shit I'm so poetic I should be a profesioanal whale hunter or a chair builder.

  • he's a gorgeous guy too; love to see his bright shining face

    =]

  • Sad, I can't believe he killed himself........ There is somethin behind his music that I don't see until he performs it.

  • hermoso tema
