I still don't understand how the 500Nm can be considered positive. What makes it different from all the other moments that it has to use the Designer's sign convention?
Good example. But shouldn't the point moment be taken as -ve in the BM diagram, since the 500 N-m moment is trying to pull the right side of the beam down? That way according to the designer's sign convention the top fibers will be in tension and bottom fibers will be in compression.

What is the designer sign convention again? I was told if you have a CCW moment then its positive and when drawing the moment diagram the jump will be equal and opposite or a downward jump. Your moment diagram begs that I was tought wrong but maybe I interpreted incorrectly. Please tell me again.

does the distance of the point moment from the point you are summing the moments about change the equation at all?
