Honestly, this show had a happier ending than I thought it would.

That's probably saying something about the expectations people set up for me about this.

Although, honestly, part of that was because I would always see a glimpse of the link to this video whenever I googled Narutaru, and thought it said 'Akira's Death'.

So, honestly, thank you. This spoiler, due to me misinterpreting it, actually helped me enjoy the show MORE.

You know even though this kid is an evil depraved bitch (and her brother's bitch I might add XD), the way she died was just plain terrifying, both morally and visually. Even though her victim gave her her just deserts, the way it was dished out isn't deserved by anyone (Yes I'm aware of what she did to her, but 2 wrongs don't make a right especially of this magnitude) I blame her brother more than anything. Kind of the same with me. The CONCEPT of it is gruesome but how it's depicted animation-wise is different.

Apparently, Narutaru was on some Japanese kids station (it's timeslot being around midnight) so that may explain why what is seen here isn't fully detailed (aka off-screen shots, silhouettes, etc).

I have an answer for your skepticism. I strongly recommend reading the comic this is based on. The anime is a pretty by-the-numbers adaptation, for the most part, very literal and not very imaginative, so a lot of the power and depth of the story is lost. And it really is a fantastic story. It's one of the few manga I really recommend to people, and I regret that the anime version seems to be better known. And yes, the expressions Mohiro Kitoh draws are strikingly delicate.

That's the wrong way to look at it. The point of Hiroko's tragic story arc is that just because you're a victim, that doesn't necessarily mean you have the moral high ground. Hiroko was horribly tortured by Aki and her friends, but in her traumatized state, she crossed the moral event horizon and became a worse monster than they ever were. And deep down, she knew this, and practically asked Shiina to kill her.

Actually, there WAS a big edit in the translated version. I've seen the original. Either Kitoh himself or someone at Dark Horse slightly redrew parts of a couple of panels. Originally, if I recall correctly, you actually saw the claw going"there", but they redrew it so that the claw's still outside. They also removed one page altogether----the gruesome aftermath. First you see Aki staring vacantly---and then you see her lower half sprawled out on the floor. It's pretty awful.
