"You can use my gun if you want to." Oh, sure. Of course, the real Earp would let someone do that.
I saw very little of the show, never cared much for westerns. But the Kevin Costner film is one of my favorites. It shows Earp as he really was, just as much on the wrong side of the law as he was on the right side.
Das war eine wunderschöne Fernsehserie, die mich intensiv an meine Kindheit erinnert. Schade, dass so etwas in Deutschland nicht wiederholt wird. :-((
Actually, the Hugh O'Brian Wyatt Earp portrayal is the real revisionist history. In spite of that, I watched the show religiously when I was a kid. Accurate or not, they were ripping good yarns. . .
It's good to understand that these shows were produced at a time when selling advertising space was very important to the producers. The t.v. watching suburb was still a rare thing, and glossy magazines and vacuum cleaners were sold door-to-door. This isn't serious history, it's a t.v. show that sold a lot of boots, cigarettes, cap pistols, cowboy clothes, horse tack, liquor and dog food.
@GJNCA : The t.v. people felt that a clean, socially "acceptable" image was important in selling the show--and the products advertised by the often-conservative sponsors. These days, they don't seem as restricted by those elements. ;]
I love stories about Old West lawmen like Marshal Earp, Marshal Hickok, Sheriff Garrett, and the rest. I realize these men were flawed, but who cares? They brought the law to a region that was screaming for order. Their actions were indeed heroic. So what's wrong with glamorizing lawmen like Wyatt Earp? If we incessantly look for flaws in the character of our heroes, then we'll have NO heroes to look up to.
hate to break it to you sojourndaze but the "heroes: who were portrayed as "brave and virtuous" were not saints (and neither was Wyatt Earp). The "revisionist" history is the one that portrays them as good and pure and all the rest of that.
A great TV show when heroes were depicted as brave and virtuous men and most of us knew men of the same character. Today so called "heroes" are foul mouthed lowlife bottom feeders and now most of us know men of that character too.
@Juliaflo I grew up on the tv shows of the 60's Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp ., Laredo , gunsmoke the movie tombstone I crave the television shows of the 60's
Revisionist history? You mean the fact that they're finally showing that Wyatt Earp wasn't the guy that everybody thought that he was?

@virginiacleosmith I second that. The lilting theme song is its calling card.
Those of you who long for television like this, raise your hand.

See no reason to use crappy language. Hear enough garbage talk in 'modern' movies, etc.
