@Addiskrilla Well, when you are writing a song, and you want the verses to rhyme, sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and they probably couldn't figure out a way to make it work with "Virginia" in there somewhere. I haven't tried to figure that out myself, maybe somebody else could do it and write another verse to it or something. I don't think for one minute that anyone will seriously think of "Dixie" without including Virginia in it.
This is the song that the University of Southern Mississippi's Dixie Darlings strut onto the football field to (well, the chorus, at least). Proud to be a native Mississippian!
@LumberSree Interesting. The chorus of the song was the melody of my high school fight song in the 1960s and 70s. I did not know until doing a search tonight that there was more to the song than just the chorus. I'm not sure why but the song faded out over the years but a group of us from that era will be going to homecoming to sing it again.
@LumberSree Well, I am glad that there is at least one college somewhere that is not afraid to be connected with Dixie and say so. I went to a big southern university and when I started there in 1968, the school band was called the "Dixie Redcoat Band" and then a few years later they changed it to the "Redcoat Band", removed "Dixie" from the name, just to appease the politically correct crowd.
You bet I"m from Dixie. Born in SOUTHERN Connecticut but raised in Charleston and Key West. Lived in Savannah and Atlanta. Heck, I know more about the South than most Southern born. Serve with the 22nd NC and the 7th Fla Straw Hats. Serve aboard the CSS Florida and the CSS Shannandoa. I stand when I hear DIXIE. We don't have a choice where we are born but we have a choice what culture we want to live with and where we want to live. YOU BET I'M FROM DIXIE.
@gilwellpark100 At University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa football games at Legion Field in years past they would troop the Confederate Flag and play, Yeah! Alabama, Are you from Dixie, Bonnie Blue Flag and Dixie before they brought out the US flag and played the Star Spangled Banner
@RM4FS We did the same at Univ of Florida. Now DIXIE is banned from ALL events that receive tax money. So much for OUR history and OUR Civil Rights or perhaps I should say the History of the United States and the Civil Rights of ALL Americans.
@gilwellpark100 Yes Sir I fully agree. I well remember the War Between The States Centennial 1961-1965. I bought a mug, when Governor John M. Patterson spoke, the mug has Rebel in Dress Uniform, a Confederate Flag and the words, "Hell No, I Ain't Fergittin!
For those who may be interested there is a great version of this song which appears as part of a Mitch Miller show salute to Minstrel songs, also including Ida. Look for Sing Along With Mitch (1of 4) and also (2 of 4).
This song was written in 1915, just two years after Grandpa was born, by George Cobb and the Hall of Fame lyricist Jack Yellen. Grandpa played an old man even as a young singer and eventually grew into the part.

Whoa back -- I smell stereotyping. Hubby and I (both in our 60's) have an old farmhouse in the rural South, keep rescue donkeys, too many rescue hound dogs and cats, but we have good, tolerant, friendly neighbors -- even though we're both known card-carrying commies. Our neighbors are young folks, but all were raised in this same rural area. Our doors remain always unlocked. New houses are being built; we will soon have blacks in our area, who will be judged as we all are, by character.
As corny as it was at the time, nothing on TV today compares to Hee-Haw. Not even close. They don't make 'em like this anymore! (Besides, we got to see Barbi Benton every week for a while).
That's why I'm grateful for RFD-TV, which shows Hee Haw eps in order. I DVD each one and put it in my collection. I remember as a kid, calling my friend Marcus. We'd sign off on the phone singing "Where oh Where." You know, I had the biggest crush on Kathy Baker.
I do and I am. Also have numerous friends of all shapes, sizes and color and love them dearly. Makes me wonder what you've done to make you so unaccepted. I'm sorry that you've been mistreated.
I wonder if you've ever thought about moving from Dixie, since you feel that way about us. We are, as a whole, just a lot of people who love God, practice "Southern Hospitality", and try to "love our neighbors as ourselves", if they will let us. Sorry you're so unhappy. God Bless!
In case anybodys interested, Grandpa Jones and all the regulars can be seen on Hee Haw on RFD-TV sattelite channel (and cable) on the weekends. Sure brings back a lot of memories.
Damn! He's good. No, correct that. He's great! YeeeeeHaaaawwww!
