This stuff, and a lot worse, is happening at many McCain events. The worst, of course, is the treatment of peaceful protesters at the RNC conv. They were assembled as a large protest group, their constitutional right as Americans, but were treated like they were rioting. Police chased them down with tear gas, rubber bullets, and percussion grenades.
This is why police departments use tests to weed out applicants who are "too smart." A police officer should first and foremost understand the U.S. Constitution.

The security personnel stated only that signs weren't allowed in video. They didn't specifically state that only anti-McCain signs weren't allowed. If you disagree with that rule on townhall meetings, then don't attend them. There is no right to attend a townhall meeting anyway.

We must distinguished, actually if this was a trad'l public forum e.g. a freedom park, a public st., that ticket & removal was illegal. However, if it was not a public forum, e.g. public city offices, etc. (even if used for public service) "state action" would be legal. But because it's not public property designated as a public forum, anyone can be escorted out. Free speech rights won't work, even if it's it partially paid for by taxpaers. Taxpayers should take this up with their legislature.

I am a librarian. Rachel is absolutely right...we are trained to protect people's right to privacy, intellectual freedom, and democracy. This stuff, and a lot worse, is happening at many McCain events. The worst, of course, is the treatment of peaceful protesters at the RNC conv. They were assembled as a large protest group, their constitutional right as Americans, but were treated like they were rioting. Police chased them down with tear gas, rubber bullets, and percussion grenades.

This isn't a free speech/assembly issue. It's a property rights issue. If you violate the rules of someone's property, the host of that property has the right to remove you. That's what happened here. She violated the rules by 1)having the sign 2)refusing to put the sign away 3)Committing trespassing for refusing to leave. She could have entered the forum by abiding by the rules or joined ProgressNow in their demonstration against McCain.

That is unless you do your research... She was informed by security that she would be permitted to enter if she put the sign away. One of the security officers had informed her that no one else had a sign out. She also refused to leave upon being told and that is trespassing. She deserved to be arrested and deserved to be removed.
McCain's staffers informed the security of the DCPA(Denver Center for the Performing Arts), that signs weren't allowed.

The security personnel stated only that signs weren't allowed in video. They didn't specifically state that only anti-McCain signs weren't allowed. If you disagree with that rule on townhall meetings, then don't attend them. There is no right to attend a townhall meeting anyway.
The only rationale that I have heard for not allowing signs is that a weapon including a gun can be hidden behind one.

I do not understand the anger by the left about this. A campaign forum is not unlike a sporting event held in a public venue. Sporting events ban items such as umbrellas and beverages, etc. being brought in. If you insist on bringing such in, you are asked to leave.
Further, most political events at that level ban firearms, though there is an argument that one has a right to bear arms.
Who attended was not banned, only what they brought in. It happens everyday.

When Senator Obama made a speech at my public high school a few months ago in an almost identical situation (Troy, MI city council meeting), I volunteered to work. We (the volunteers) were instructed not to allow signs of any kind into the building. I actually think this particular incident has been given more media coverage than deserved. For the record (and to dissuade any notion of an "agenda"), I do not support either of two leading candidates.

The 1st amend. States: "CONGRESS shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech..." It is the GOV'T that cannot discriminate based upon political opinion, not private citizens. Any private citizen may lawfully rent a facility (even a public facility) and deny attendance to anyone else (as long as the denial is not based on race, ethnicity ect.). She was indeed outside. The question is was she on property being rented by McCain's org. That pertains to the contract that he had with the city. If the contract didn't specifically refer to that area, then McCain's org. was in the wrong.
BTw, if something like this occurred with Obama, I would support his right to property rights too. I have NOT HEARD any objection from city officials, so for now I'm giving McCain the benefit of the doubt as I see no other choice.

It has been asked why the mainstream media hasn't taken this story. Well, undoubtedly if interest in this story occurred with journalists, city officials would have been contacted to find out if they thought the actions were valid. If they believed that the actions by the Secret Service were valid, then there is no story and the main stream media will not report on it.
So far, no complaints from city officials, so I have no reason to believe that the city objected to this incident.

McCain was LEASING it from the city. It was a contract. By that contract he temporarily had the rights to that building.
As for the protesters outside Obama's townhall, they have the right to protest there as no one's property rights were being violated. It was OUTSIDE the townhall. This librarian tried to ENTER McCain's townhall.
If a group of protesters wishes to protest OUTSIDE a McCain townhall, I fully respect and uphold their right to doe so.

I stated that the building was being LEASED to McCain. That is per the contract with the city, he had the RIGHTS to it temporarily. Regarding the librarian, I specifically stated that she was VIOLATING THE RULES by having that sign and they had the right to remove her on those grounds. She REFUSED to leave, so she was trespassing. There is NO RIGHT to attend a townhall meeting. I'm glad to know that you care nothing for property rights.

In truth there is no right to board a bus either. I strongly disapprove of discrimination based upon race, but that didn't happen here. Rosa Parks was removed because she wouldn't heed the request of a Caucasian and she was Black.

We must distinguished, actually if this was a trad'l public forum e.g. a freedom park, a public st., that ticket & removal was illegal. However, if it was not a public forum, e.g. public city offices, etc. (even if used for public service) "state action" would be legal. But because it's not public property designated as a public forum, anyone can be escorted out. Free speech rights won't work, even if it's it partially paid for by taxpaers. Taxpayers should take this up with their legislature.

That is what I have been saying all along. McCain rented the property from the city, and there were ground rules for the forum. The librarian violated those rules by refusing to put the sign away and then committed trespassing by refusing to leave upon being asked.
There is no case of abuse of anyone's rights here except by the librarian against McCain by her committing trespassing.
