Closing the river pisses me off. I grew up on this river, fished it since I was 7 years old. Never targeted steelhead, never even accidently hooked one. Now they close it to all fishing in the off-chance you MIGHT hook a steelhead. F#$kin joke. The rainbow fishing is awesome on this river too.....how about a flyfishing only catch and release opening?!?!?! Hate to say it, but the steelhead fishery is GONE. Sad but true.
first stop the insane drawdown of water from the tributary rivers. Sorry ranchers but you can learn to do with less or change your crop.
second, pressure DFO and MOE to get a better control of net fisheries to give steelhead better escapement.
three,pressure MOE to fund a radio tagging program, which may identify post estuary danger spots ,ie: aqua culture, by catch, by DFO controled fisheries etc.
four, get involved! Steelhead Society of BC for one are activly involved in the area.
