@ShynAwkward A Democracy is ran (theoretically) by the people (Majorty rule so to speak). A Republic is ran by representatives of the people. A Representative Democracy of which we have both systems working together. We use the Constitution as a Framework for our government. John Adams did want a Constitutional Republic, but other also wanted a Democracy.

I say skip all the arguements and call it a "Constitutional Democratic-Republic." We use all 3. Everyone wins and no one is right or wrong.

Not sure what his solution is. If he is expecting the government to fix everything he is dreaming (He kept saying "where is the government?"). The Feds have assumed the role as The Central Planner of everything (esp. economic), so I'd say the government is everywhere. Not sure where this guy is looking... I'd say cut the Feds by 50 to 75 percent and this country can return to prosperity.

A government that is big enough to give you everything is big enough to take it all away.

@patricblack1 you're assuming we have capitalism now. A truly capitalist system people would be able to freely compete. Try starting a farm or a factory. You will have more hoops to jump through than you can image. Government agencies are there to make sure large corporations don't have competition through the guise of ensuring "quality" and "safety." But they really don't want someone to compete with their buddies who get them re-elected.

I agree that we don't have socialism, but rather an economic fascism. But I disagree that capitalism was used to carry out there agenda. The Dept of Energy for example was created in the 70s to reduce foreign. At the time we imported 40% of our oil, now its 70% and the dept. is hundreds of billions of dollars. Most government depts are sold as a public goods, but once installed do god knows what.

@patricblack1 one other thing. In the 1900s state, local, and federal gov. was 4% of the economy. 4%!!! Now what is it? 40% if not more? by the time you figure sale tax or other hidden taxes like on alcohol, gas, etc.

So my question is how can the government? grow year after year and some how we still have capitalism? Was Bush as capitalist? He doubled the Federal deficit, passed huge drug prescription program, no child left behind. If it upped the deficit Bush was for it.
