No many know this but Quayle was reading off a cue card that a spelling teacher had given him. And that teacher had spelled Potato with an e at the end. After it was over the reporters had a back and forth with each other about how it was spelled. Some said the way Quayle spelled it was right. Quayle is seen in the video showing the card to the reporters with the wrong spelling on it. But not one reporter wrote about it. Instead they said Quayle was the bad speller.

Wow after 15 years I have finally seen this commercial. In 1994 when I was 13 I knew that this commercial with Elijah Wood would be airing sometime during the Super Bowl. Exactly when I didn't know. I somehow lost track of time and started watching the Super Bowl 15 minutes too late but I didn't realize that the commercial already aired some time during the first 15 minutes. So I sat and watched the whole stupid Super Bowl for 4 hours, hoping to see Elijah Wood (my obsession back then).

Dan Quayle does know how to spell Potato but the teacher didn't . They showed the uncut video on the old Trio network and you see Quayle turn the card around after the teacher left to show the press it was spelled with a "e" at the end. What's funny is hearing the reporters debate that. Some thought it was spelled with an "e" and some didn't . Either way the media reported it to make Quayle look bad but the truth is the teacher spelled it wrong.

I have the unedited version in my collection. The card is was reading off was spelled wrong. Later Quayle showed it to the media at the event and pointed out that fact. But half of them couldn't agree if it was spelled right. Bottom line, The spelling teacher spelled the cue cards wrong.
