Excuse me for cursing but: FUCK PROP 8!!!! VOTE NO! I AM!! I just got off of their site reading about why we should vote "yes" and its just all a bunch of bullshit. I'm tired of the shit in this country. Why can't some people just learn to accept people for who they are? I'm fuming right now - I'm just SOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed off.
You're right: people ARE weird. Pssh, those black ppl voted 'yes'? Shit, that's dumb. There was a time when THEY weren't accepted into society. Good vid.
TOTALLY obvious that this whole issue is nonsense. If prop 8 passes, whats next...will i not be able to marry someone who happens to be an atheist and im a catholic?? Where do we draw the line from just infringing rights and "protecting" marriage.
The forces behind YES ON PROP 8 are mostly Church of Latter Day Saints and fanatical Catholics. Yet, they were too ashamed (or too afraid to lose their tax exemptions) to "come out of the closet" and proclaim who they really are. Instead, they hide behind "Protect Marriage." What are they protecting marriage from? 50% of heterosexual marriages end in divorce! How could allowing HLGTs to marry make the statistics any worse? Ha, ha. NO on Prop. 8!!! Separate church and state!!!
Its so stupid how they want everyone to think that they will teach kids in school about gay marriage and stuff...its like, thats such complete bullshit..
First of all, why would teachers teach kids about gay marriage? I have NEVER, EVER, been tought about marriage ONCE
And why do people care if children are taught about it or not? They have to learn some time or another.
Yeah, it is. That's the point of the video. The irony is that protecting the rights of blacks wasn't seen as a civil rights issue, either. Now, it's painfully obvious we were wrong.
i'll bet dollars to donuts that you didn't know the southern manifesto was legistlation proposed by the democratic party and opposed by republicans. so perhaps you can forgive us if we don't have the same familiarity with your bills as you do.
Oh please! The Southern Manifesto was a bunch of racist bigots refusing to go along with desegregation. IF you live in the south and really believe that it was just some simple partisan battle, you're an idiot.
What's also weird is that most of the people who are for Prop 8 are the same nut jobs that call people who are pro-choice "baby killers" and whatever. Well guess what nut jobs, those people who are forced to give birth to their children and have to put them up for adoption, some of those kids will get adopted by gay couples hahahahaha!
I did my early voting yesterday. Yay! But I still have to listen to those awful Yes on 8 ads on the radio and TV constantly. When will it end? Oh, yeah, next Tuesday. Get out the vote: NO on 8!
Just to let you know that this is NOT taking anything away that has been given. There was never a law created stating that homosexual marriages could be performed. They just started doing them without permission from a law. Therefore they are not loosing anything are they? They just can not REDEFINE something that has already been defined in the state laws.
Good call man. You better believe a ballot measure to "protect the integrity of society" would have passed by a landslide in any southern state during the 1960's if it hadn't been for "activist judges" on the federal level. Think critcally America.
Oh, and the separation of church and state argument doesn't really work either. Separation of church and state means that government stays out of religion, not that religious ideals stay out of government. Sorry. Now things that will happen if Prop 8 does fail WILL be a violation of separation of church and state as the government tries to force religious organizations and people who are morally against same-sex marriage to treat it, and teach it, equal to traditional marriage.
Throwing that word "CHOICE" around proves both your bigotry and your ignorance. And as far as living some "lifestyle" that YOU think is acceptable is concerned, get over yourself. If you think that you are somehow superior because of who you sleep with, then you need to wake the hell up.
By the way, you're blocked.
How does it feel to have your freedom of speech restricted?
Liking it?
Sure hope so.
Remember this when you're voting to take away other peoples rights.
I'm not sure how this is a civil rights issue. I believe people can be born gay, but they still make the CHOICE to live the lifestyle. People cannot choose in any way to be black, white, male, female, etc... Seems a little different. I also believe child perverts are born perverts--should we give child molesters a break, as long as the 14year old agreed to having sex, since they can't control themselves? And no, I'm not saying homosexuals are equivalent to child molesters, but they do CHOOSE.
So straight people get to fall in love and have sex and gay people don't? What exactly is the "gay lifestyle?" How does a gay person's existence effect society negatively in the same way a child molester's existence does?
Well, I actually do know many people who've chosen to be a different gender than they were born as, and I'm sure you are aware of (and maybe even support) people choosing to convert to a different religion.
So, since religion is a choice, shall we no longer enforce laws against religious discrimination?
As to your equating homosexuality to pedophilia, the obvious difference is that one is a heinous crime. Or do you believe that homosexuality should be outlawed as well?
Yes on 8 is supported by the American Nazi Party, the Klu Klux Klan, and violent fag-bashers. Aren't you proud to be associated with groups with such high moral values? Yes, join the Yes on 8 supporters and chant ther mantra: "Kill all fags! Kill all niggers! Kill all Jews! Kill all Chinks! Kill all Spics! Kill all Japs!"
Prop eight is just flat out wrong. People that are for proposition 8 argue that somehow children will be so hurt if prop 8 fails. Who came to the conclusion that gay couples can't raise perfectly good kids? There are plenty of little hellions/law-breakers/fucked up kids that come out from straight couples. The government shouldn't tell homosexual couples that they can't marry, the government shouldn't be infringing on the right of the pursuit of happiness.
Yeah, it would be nice if we had complete separation of church and state in the U.S. but some things are too ingrained - at least for that to happen within our lifetime. We seem to be stuck with a certain level of it, but that doesn't mean we have to just lie down and take it either.
If you thought you were going to come here and start something, think again.
Also, your pompous attitude would be a little less laughable if you weren't also yet another faceless coward.
And finally, go read some history. If you had, you'd know there are similarities, especially when it comes to "concerned citizens" crying foul because judges at the top did something they didn't agree with.
There was a huge backlash against Desegregation too. The similarities are a little too hard to ignore, but many seem to be giving it a concerted effort.
I am both Black and queer - yes folks, it's possible - and I also happen to be a law student with a BA in sociology and sexuality studies. Both race- and sexuality-based discrimination are civil rights issues. Why is it that the great majority of people can only bother to fight discrimination when it affects them? Has history taught us nothing?!
why do people only fight discrimination when it affects them? you tell me, mr "black queer." i don't see you jumping at the helm of religious freedoms. and to say that protection of religious freedom is a non-issue when it comes to prop 8 is either a bold faced lie or naivete.
1. I'm a woman. 2. Same-sex couples have faith communities willing to perform marriage ceremonies for them. And there have always been other churches who do not want to marry same-sex couples. Prop 8 is not about that. Prop 8 is about CIVIL marriage. Something tells me that if every same sex couple bypassed churches and went straight to their local civil authority to obtain a marriage license you would still oppose gay marriage. So don't pretend that religious freedom is the issue here. Please.
Haha, I love how you put things in such a simple perspective with this video. Your tone and everything is perfect... And I agree that is pretty surprising about the older couple.
Thanks. Yeah, various ways we could look at that kind of scenario, and without talking with them directly, all I could walk (or drive) away with was that quick impression.
It's like that on all the videos on this topic, actually. Tamer here for some reason, and I've only had to remove one comment that was truly vile. Frankly, I expected there to be more idiocy landing here than there has been.
unlike race...sexual preference is a choice. not the same type of civil rights issue as racial equality...just my opinion. the couple is probably Christian.
It is neither ironic nor hypocritical, rather the issue is moral. 4 judges out of 7 changed the voice of the 61% majority of the people in California who already decided the issue. I agree, I think you do have a beef with those 4 judges who are now going to have to figure out why marriages were performed contrary to the will of the people.
Thank you for your comments here and engaging the others in discussion. Nice balance from the hateful and judgmental crap that others have been tossing around here in the last couple days.
Hey no trouble I try to keep a level head about all things. I just see this as an "equality under the law issue". You have to be blatently ignoring history to think that "seperate but equal" will ever be equal.
Funny because I was tossing this around 2 days ago. I respect love - regardless of race or gender. As a Black woman I've dated out of my race and think it's crazy that interracial marriages weren't recoginized until 1967. Taking that into consideration - though I was raised in the South with strict lines drawn insisting that "marriage" is between a man and woman, I have to respect love between all consenting adults as valid and worthy of equal rights. It took some deep thought, but I got there.
Weird doesn't even begin to touch it, y'know? We have some crap like that on our ballot too. So, we'll be voting NO on 2! Dan went on a piano tuning in a Baptist church here and they had a "Yes on 2" placard next to the freakin' altar facing the congregation. Makes me ill. I went to a great Gay/Lesbian film festival last weekend and there were great "No on 2" stickers and I forgot to get one. I'll be voting no!
The methodist church in my town has a "No on 8" sign in front of it. It made me happy.
I think this issue draws a line right down the religious. I view those religions that say gays shouldn't marry in the same light as those that used to say interracial marriages were not ok.
I think its neat how people vote on propositions down there...and am often astounded on how rediculous a person would need to be to vote either yes or no (depending on the topic). I vote no in spirit
yes...people are weird! i see the irony for sure. hypocrisy? hard to call without knowing the couple really...knowing their motivations. lol look at me pondering this...
I think most of the people who are for prop8 are hiding behind their homophobia + using prop8 as a means to discriminate even though they say they are for gay rights, How does that make sense? I was so irritated with Biden in his debate b/c he said that he and Obama were for gay rights but not for making marriage between ANY two people, they want marriage defined as b/w man and woman only, it was so hipocritical of him, it was the one time during that debate that he really mad me angry. No on 8!
I just don't understand how anyone could vote yes on such an insane proposition. In fact, I don't understand how a country that is so proud of it's democracy and with it's "God bless America" and yada yada yada, could even allow such a proposition to even exist. It's 2008 and peole are still this stupid and ignorant... When are they going to realize that God loves all His children? I sure am glad I live in a country where I can marry anyone I damn want.
People are definately weird! I think it is down right ludicrous that this kind of thing could even happen in the world today. It's clearly a civil rights issue. Thanks, Grams
NO on 8!!!!!!!! Well, that's my vote! :-) People are weird! And the ones that think their way is the ONLY way and everyone needs to stand within their moral judgements (while they continue to "judge" others) freak me out a bit...lol NO on 8!!!!!!
This reminds me of a documentary I watched on our recent influx of eastern-European immigrants in the UK. Apparently a large proportion of those opposed to the immigration come from the last wave of immigrants - Indians and Carribbeans who came here in the 60s and 70s. Bizarre.
this makes me so mad! you cant take back what the people woted for..urgh! and if you think of the money side..weddings cost lots of money! not that thats the only issue i see but..
Hope the exam went ok. Yes I think you summed it up when you said people are wierd. Unless you point it out to them directly some people just do not see the similarities between any form of discrimination. Also if it doesn't apply to them then they don't care who else is suffering. Some people are almost snobby about it, if I vote rich that means I'm not poor? Can't vote but you know I'm against that, what a sneaky thing to do. Cheers, Lesley
hypocritical in my opinion. when as human beings are we going to progress past this maturity? what does it matter if two people want to get married? what does it hurt? There's so many other things that are far more important tasks that need to be taken care of than worring about gay marriage.
IMO there should not be laws on the books in regard to this one-way or the other... Everyone has the right to feel what he or she choose concerning marriage... As far as discrimination and denomination, there is plenty of that going around on both sides of this argument...
If you told me 32 years ago that people still had to fight in 2008 for basic human rights under the law - marriage, dignity, equality, reproductive freedom, etc - I wouldn't have believed it. We've made progress in Canada, but have a way to go yet.
Yes, you have, haven't you? Now it is illegal to have freedom of speech in Canada don't you? Too bad you can be arrested there for having your own opinion. Interesting that you gain one freedom for a few and loose an important and fundamental freedom for ALL!!!
Scandinavia has had laws of same sex civil partnership for 15 - 20 years now, and Norway will take the full step of same gender MARRIAGE as from 2009, making marriage in fact gender-neutral. Many other countries already have this law passed.. I can't see the problem, really.. I sure would vote NO had I been allowed to vote at all!
ohh yes the usual Hokey-Pokey dance you do in the US, one small step forward and then two steps back.
I hope all the lazy liberals will get off their respective asses and vote, tired of hearing how the nutty religious right always wins cause they care enough to vote.
Ah yes, the old California 'Prop' Ads - always so twisted around to make people think the exact opposite - 'a yes vote means NO!' 'A Vote for 8 means Yes to No!' WTF?
'Say NO to Yes!' LOL
I'd like to peel back the holier than thou shroud and know which 'special interest' groups are involved in that proposition.
sounds downright unconstitutional to me - but then your government seems to have forgotten about the constitution all round - we are lucky as we don't have one to be ignored!
Most people don't really understand their place in society. I've met a number of people who want to defend the taxes of the rich, because they believe that "when I become rich, I don't want my taxes raised." As for the black people, hate to generalize but... probably their preacher handed out the yes on prop 8 sticker. (Disclaimer: Of course, I know that this does not apply to every single *African American [or current p.c. term] merely an estimation for purposes of explanation.)
I hear from folks all the time, "The 'yes' folks called me. I told them to scram, etc. etc." How's come they haven't called me? I want to tell them to scram! Maybe I'm toooooo weird. :)
People are weird and my sister is one of them. We had a huge "discussion" about this very issue the other day. I came to the conclusion that she is a dumbass. If I were in CA I would vote no!
You're absolutely correct that last statement!I cant believe that it would be possible to void something already legislated!Sounds like total hypocrisy to me.I sincerely hope P8 is successful and reasonable people rally!
What pisses me off is that my brother, and his partner of OVER 25 years, can't wed, but any heterosexual couple can get married in Vegas on a drunken binge only to have it nullified a few days later!
It's sad, but folks who have dedicated their lives to each other are told they shouldn't be allowed to wed, but a man and woman who just met in a bar in Vegas can be married 15 minutes later if they so desired, and that's OKAY! Like that's "preserving the sanctity of marriage". *eyeroll* What is f*cking WRONG with that picture???
Once you de-criminalise homosexuality, you acknowledge people's right to maintain a relationship with a same sex partner. It's horrifying to me that Australia which holds up Mardi Gras and Priscilla Queen of the Desert as cultural icons still doesn't have full rights for couples.
I don't see how same sex marriage takes one single thing away from traditional marriage. It's like saying Protestant divorce makes a mockery of Catholic marriage.
I don't however agree that the church should be made to embrace gay union. The church stands for a certain set of values as an independent organisation and should be allowed to maintain those values.
*Taking a study break to ignore my own self-imposed rule and read comments*
:-)
Yeah, I agree. Churches have never been forced to perform marriage ceremonies against their will before, and this doesn't change that. It's utterly ridiculous.
Did you see Kenrg's video? He nails this one about ten times better than I could have hoped to.
Just watched his - very well put. What he said about churches was what I was trying to get across only much less eloquently.
I also like his race discrimination analogy. As I said over on his channel:
It's easy to forget that institutionalised racial discrimination in the US is easily within people's lifetimes, not confined to the Civil War. Of course yesterday's bigots become tomorrow's zealots - it was only 25 years from the Civil Rights Act of 1965 to Lethal Weapon 2.
Great Vlog Curt. Yes, I too see it as a civil rights issue and believe it should not pass. The supporters have been calling our house. They sound so reasonable as they spread their lies, it's scary. Thanks for doing this and good luck on the test.
It's that appeal to "traditional values" and the religious angle that brings in people that you would think would get the civil rights angle. I'm dumbfounded that this thing might pass. We have three weeks to get the word out that this is nothing but old fashioned discrimination.
I will vote no on this...how can we vote against people's rights? This would not be right...all people should have the right to marry whoever they want...it should not matter if they are a man or a woman...what we should care about is to protect the right of being free to choose...anyway...my opinion...my right...vote no on 8
Curt I feel the same way. It baffles me that they don't think a gay couple with kids is not a family. Im sure they are the same folks who wouldn't let the thousands of fosters kids in this country be adopted by loving couples who just happen to be gay. Its sad.
I am black, but I can tell you it has to do with a religious system that demands their followers to never challenge it. It's sad to see how the views that justice slavery are also being observe so adamantly by some African Americans.
If I lived in Cali I would vote NO on Propostion 8. I am ALLOWED to vote this year. I actually just got my Voters Registration card in the mail this morning! But since I live in SC I will look VERY carefully on how I vote in this election!
While I would vote NO on this issue, if it should pass, I wonder how long before the ACLU mounts a federal case to overturn it based on the 1st Amendment and the Loving/14th Amendment decision.
That is so unfair. :( I don't understand how any government official could think that this thing could protect families. If anything it will tear families apart. I wish people were more accepting in this world.
I just went and looked to see what the "reasoning" behind voting yes would be (just to see how it "protects" families) and some supporters of the yes campaign.....my brain started to scream!
I "like" that the TV ad says that voting no "forces" gay marriage on people, NOT that it's TAKING AWAY peoples rights that they have NOW!
I still can't figure out what the real difference is between people who live together lovingly for 20 years and people who get married and live lovingly together for 20 years...
yeah people are weird, you know I think its BS that all of this has to happen. You know people think we've come so far over the past 50 years or so when it comes to accepting different people, genders, races, religion, and sexual preference, but really we haven't. We're just the same as we once were. I think all those people are ignorant idiots that need to be shipped off somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic ocean on an island and survive with they're own stupid kind.
As an African-Ameri-- BLACK woman who lives in the state of California, I will be voting NO on prop 8. But I think I can understand where the elderly couple may be coming from. Black people, and specifically black Americans tend to be EXTREMELY religious. So, I don't think it's so much a civil rights issue as it is a religious one. Do I agree? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Do I understand? Kinda. Depends on where your beliefs are. I'm not religious so it's not really an issue for me.
*scolding self for not yet diving into text books, but I HAD to reply to this right away*
Thank you for that insight! Yes, it totally makes sense. I guess when you throw religion into anything it acts as a sort of wild card... or CAN anyway.
I heard something the other day that the term "marriage" was originated by the religious for a man and a woman to marry. It has nothing to do with the legal aspect of it whatsoever. Using the term "marriage" in a non-religious ceremony is totally against what it is for. The term "civil union" is exactly what it is. It's the legal (government) part of all this. I think crying to be "married" is kind of a waste of time. It's the wrong term to be using. No to Prop 8!
People are very weird - and if you made the case to them on the irony of it all - they wouldn't even know what you are talking about. Dear in headlights imagery comes to mind for some reason.
Excuse me for cursing but: FUCK PROP 8!!!! VOTE NO! I AM!! I just got off of their site reading about why we should vote "yes" and its just all a bunch of bullshit. Well, you're wrong. The legal wall between church and state is to protect the church from the state as well as the state from the church.
No church can be forced to officiate any gay marriages, any more than a Jew and Baptist could force a Catholic clergy to marry them.

EQUALITY for ALL AMERICANS !
The standard of American Values used to be...
no rights for the African Americans, then no rights for women.
Prop 8 will strip the same rights from the gay community.
Is this fair? Haven't we learned from our history?
NO on PROP 8
For the women and the African Americans out there, please remember that you once were second class citizens too...
Don't make the same mistake! Please use your heart and your brains, Please vote NO on PROP 8.

Has history taught us nothing?!
boredgurl24 3 years ago
why do people only fight discrimination when it affects them? you tell me, mr "black queer." i don't see you jumping at the helm of religious freedoms. and to say that protection of religious freedom is a non-issue when it comes to prop 8 is either a bold faced lie or naivete.
nephihirt 3 years ago
Please.

Was happy to. It seems to be inspiring anger from people who haven't woken the hell up yet - which is actually a good sign.
It means they're now forced to pay closer attention than they have before.

Thanks for watching, Nic

unlike race...sexual preference is a choice. not the same type of civil rights issue as racial equality...just my opinion. the couple is probably Christian.
whendeegirl 3 years ago
With this comment you just proved that you know absolutely nothing about human sexuality.
OhCurt 3 years ago
It is neither ironic nor hypocritical, rather the issue is moral. 4 judges out of 7 changed the voice of the 61% majority of the people in California who already decided the issue. I agree, I think you do have a beef with those 4 judges who are now going to have to figure out why marriages were performed contrary to the will of the people.

You're stuck in the dark ages, dude.

If the 61% are violating the constitution then yes.
Also It's both Ironic and Hypocritical.

Ravensinger 3 years ago
The methodist church in my town has a "No on 8" sign in front of it. It made me happy.
I think this issue draws a line right down the religious. I view those religions that say gays shouldn't marry in the same light as those that used to say interracial marriages were not ok.
My advice to those churches is "adapt or die".

There's so many other things that are far more important tasks that need to be taken care of than worring about gay marriage.
amen curt
artofbrowneyedgirl 3 years ago
IMO there should not be laws on the books in regard to this one-way or the other... Everyone has the right to feel what he or she choose concerning marriage... As far as discrimination and denomination, there is plenty of that going around on both sides of this argument...
PappyStu 3 years ago
If you told me 32 years ago that people still had to fight in 2008 for basic human rights under the law - marriage, dignity, equality, reproductive freedom, etc - I wouldn't have believed it. We've made progress in Canada, but have a way to go yet.

Yes, you have, haven't you? Now it is illegal to have freedom of speech in Canada don't you? Too bad you can be arrested there for having your own opinion. Interesting that you gain one freedom for a few and loose an important and fundamental freedom for ALL!!!

It's sad, but folks who have dedicated their lives to each other are told they shouldn't be allowed to wed, but a man and woman who just met in a bar in Vegas can be married 15 minutes later if they so desired, and that's OKAY!
It's like saying Protestant divorce makes a mockery of Catholic marriage.
zebidee55 3 years ago
I don't however agree that the church should be made to embrace gay union. The church stands for a certain set of values as an independent organisation and should be allowed to maintain those values.

Yeah, I agree. Churches have never been forced to perform marriage ceremonies against their will before, and this doesn't change that. It's utterly ridiculous.
Did you see Kenrg's video? He nails this one about ten times better than I could have hoped to.
OhCurt 3 years ago
Just watched his - very well put. What he said about churches was what I was trying to get across only much less eloquently.
I also like his race discrimination analogy. As I said over on his channel:
It's easy to forget that institutionalised racial discrimination in the US is easily within people's lifetimes, not confined to the Civil War. Of course yesterday's bigots become tomorrow's zealots - it was only 25 years from the Civil Rights Act of 1965 to Lethal Weapon 2.

I will vote no on this...how can we vote against people's rights? I heard something the other day that the term "marriage" was originated by the religious for a man and a woman to marry. It has nothing to do with the legal aspect of it whatsoever. Using the term "marriage" in a non-religious ceremony is totally against what it is for. The term "civil union" is exactly what it is. It's the legal (government) part of all this. I think crying to be "married" is kind of a waste of time. It's the wrong term to be using. No to Prop 8!
