  • Firewire 800 is faster than gigabit ethernet: there's a huge amount of overhead for ethernet (due to packet size of only 1500 bytes)... you'll rarely get more than 20-30 MB/sec. FW 800 beats that easily.

  • ... I don't get it .. ethernet is cheaper, and goes up to 100meter at a time not only 4.5m(thats firewire standard) and ethernet is faster .. atm cat7 goes up to 100gbits ... at best firewire 800 goes at 800mbits .. wow .. and software comes standard with and PC or mac or linux any OS ... this is so not the future

  • IP-over-FireWire was around well before Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n came out to the market.

    Search List_of_device_bandwidths on Wikipedia

... many dont have Gigabit network setups, but MOST decent computers have had FireWire400 for a long time.

and Just think of FireWire3200! over 3,000Gbit!

Wait a sec ... checked the numbers and what you said again .... you meant 100Gbase-X??? Are you kidding? That's SERVER class networking .... like, 12.5 Giga BYTES PER SECOND! EXTREMELY 'PRO' STUFF!

  • You should get a mac.
