  • Great video. Everything that he explained is correct and very accurate. When I do clutches, I use the same mesures that are used on here. Very well put together, couldn't have word it any better.

  • @da1stegr Thanks for the kind comments. The attention to detail for the installation process is a critical step and can make the difference between a satisfied customer or a do it again situation. We definetly learned one on this rather low mileage transmission situation. Just a reminder, this was a freebie to the car owner. Gary

  • First of all, thanks for the video. But, how would I stop the flywheel from turning if the engine is out of the car? If you could help I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

  • @BboyMentos At 8:27 you can see the piece of steel channel that I used to stop rotation. It was secured to a large engine block bolt and one of the clutch cover bolt holes in the flywheel.

  • Noise sounds the same before and after.

  • if your paying to have your clutch worked on your better off telling them to replace all of the parts.

  • Theres 15min I won't ge back. Probably 100's of dollars in parts and no fix?? Great Job!!

  • That "noise" is the cold air intake, put the stock intake back on and I bet the "noise" will go away lol ... The air noise happened after my friend installed an intake, sounds pretty cool I think.. Nice clutch install vid though!!

    Have a nice day..

  • def a 1.8 ...

  • Input shaft bearings always go bad on hondas

  • As others have noted, the noise present is 100% input shaft bearing. A careful google search of the symptoms would have confirmed this. I had the same noise in the same car, replaced the input shaft bearing in the transmission and it went dead silent. See my video (which was a before video). That flywheel IS a candidate for resurfacing, It is a stepped flywheel and must be resurfaced accordingly, but otherwise will perform identically to a new one when done so correctly. Otherwise, good video.

  • Its the bearing, i really can't tell it's Throw out bearing or input shaft bearing but it is. i have the same problem in my 97 civic coupe going to fiend out

  • gearbox you głupki PL

  • He should have used zinc oxide grease instead of htb...

  • @kaikoda I was curious, so Google'd Zinc Oxide Grease, seems like it is used as a heat sink grease in electronic applications to bond between the (example) a chip and the heat sink. No reference found to rust resistance on steel. From ALLDATA Honda recommends super high temp urea grease. Gary

  • This video helped me alot when I did my auto to manual conversion on my Integra. Thanks!

  • Don't have a Honda, but this is great information for when I change the clutch in my Toyota. Thanks for the effort you put in to the detail!

  • @MrECC83 Thanks for the kind comments. You're correct it is the details that make a difference. Good luck with your Toyota. Gary

  • @perfectionclutch Im sorry so you did all this and he was a come back,,,did you Ever diagnose the problem and fix it ? just very curious im almost ASE master tech,i would think bearings,?

  • This noise is very typical (in my experience with older D & B series Hondas 1988-2000).. The 6 that i have owned and a few of my friends all make/made that sound in some degree.. I have personally had many-many years of driving with this sound and never had a single failure yet.. It's definitely a bearing on the input shaft but i wish i knew more about it... Great videos by the way!

  • @honda2363 Thanks for the info. We didn't expect a transmission bearing noise at the mileage of this car, we learned something on this one. Gary

  • awsome video. i have the same noise in my car. was hoping this video would let me know how to fix it.... guess ill never know what it is

  • @GEO3535 Looks like you need a video from a transmission specialist, sorry. Gary

  • thanks for the video N the comments below, would you have a video on how to take if apart FROM THE VERY START? .... Thanks in advance

  • bad input shaft bearing(s). You can hear the noise fading away not getting cut off...

  • my moronic mechanic installed a new clutch and now it chatters :(

  • Very well presented video. But you did not diagnose the root cause?

  • Sounds like the bearings on the main shaft inside the transmission. Common issues with Civics.

  • @crownedroyal2003 yeah that does not cause too many problems right?

  • i have a honda civic vtec with same peoblem but i took it to a shop they said they dont know what is the problem untill they open the clutch but i can see the honda u changed the clutch it still had the noise so do u think my car is the gear box or ist the clutch making that noise if u can tell me please please by the way i love the video the way every thing u do its best thanks

  • @shwan2307901 i have been working on honda`s for 15+ years now and i can tell you this, it is very hard to maintain a "quite engine bay" once a car has this many miles and obviously is ragged on, this honda had a intake, and is vtec, i am sure you like the sound/feel of vtec and often floor it huh? well a lot of honda`s have cam chatter, if you dont know what thats is, you dont know much about any vtec honda engine,so first make sure that is not what you are hearing.

  • @ghrmember

Thanks for adding your .02$, appreciate the comments. Blame part of the miss-diagnosis on not being transmission experts, not being familiar with the car and frankly at 169,000 miles I didn't expect transmission bearings to be the possible root cause. We did learn from this experience and hopefully the video shows the importance of a carefull noise evaluation before and after the install. The car is still being used.

    Gary

  • thats a clean si

  • just replaced my clutch and flywheel in my '98 CTR and sounds the same once I got done......no sounds what so ever, same as before! They should check the gear box for metal flakes and hopefully they replaced the tranny oil.

  • prob was still getting noise after they were done due to, that stuff takes a couple 1000K miles to get broken in and used to the oil it will make that noise with new parts liek that espiecially bearings, good fix though pretty nice

  • I think I would be annoyed if I got a bill for repairs that might not be required because it was misdiagnosed as a thrust bearing rather than gearbox wear!

Good video, very well presented, I like the way everything was greased and cleaned and the fact he didn't use air-tools.

    Really interesting to watch!

  • @urbex2007

This was installed for free, no invoice. We did it for a training video. I'm not opposed to air tools used in the correct place, but impact tools for installing a F/W or clutch is the wrong place. I checked with the owner, car is doing fine. FWIW, all of our installations were for training, no invoices to any of the owners. But belive me, we'll be even more carefull on the next "noise" issue.

    Gary

  • Typical mechanic...."it's the clutch making the sound", then when you are done it still makes the same sound and now you charge him for more shop time and changing other perfectly fine parts. I will say it's a good video, but I would edited out the end where it still made the same sound. Kinda discredits your shop.

  • 2:42 - 2:50 lol

  • the noise is obviousluy the bearings in his tranny. typical bseries trans sound. royal purple makes a good 75w 90 fluid that would halp quiet that. honda mtf is rather thin. nice mod though, should gain a bit of TQ which should help out with the tourqueless b16.

  • i swapped this same engine into my 91 civic in 3 days lol doing a clutch install is easy. and its usually cheaper to replace the flywheel than to machine it. good to see they didnt slap another stock flywheel on. but yeah the prob is the input shaft bearing in the trans. it makes noise cause the trans is spinning when the clutch is releases. it stops when the pedal is pressed lol

  • gah i wish that i can change my clutch in 15 min like this guy lol

  • they should have edited out the reason why they were doin the clutch.. "were doin this to get rid of a noise... ok we did it but the noise is still there..." if i didnt work on my own cars, i wouldnt pay these guys, they misdiagnosed the problem and fixed the wrong thing.... lol

  • how similar is this cars tanny to a 1998 honda CRV? we have the same noise and it goes away with the pedal down as well and i couldn't really tell was it the clutch release or not

  • Thank you for this awesome guide. I was able to replace my first clutch and flywheel last night in my MR2 - all on my own as well. Thank you for your detailed instructions.

  • A little bit of gearbox wear. Lol.

  • tranny's are way easier to work with on integra DA9's .... cause they are cable clutches...why can't all tranny's be like dat...easy as fuck to adjust and fix too...even upside down at the clutch pedal...

  • WHY!!!??? Did you change the clutch ...it's obviously not the problem if the noise goes away with the pedal up?????? DUh! Needs a tranny. A two year old could have diagnosed this better. Spin the input shaft by hand when the tranny is out.....problem diagnosed!!!! Common failure on these cars...dUh!

  • I have noise and was told I need to replace the clutch throw out valve? or bearing? is this the same thing? I intent on doing it myself.

  • @xGUNxBUNNYx

Diagnosing a noise from a clutch can be a bit tricky, that was part of our intent of this video. Remember almost all modern vehicles have clutch bearings that turn when the engine is turning. The pilot bearing can be "turned on or off" with the clutch pedal and the transmission can also be isolated by releasing the clutch (pedal down) and selecting a gear, input shaft stops turning. Most of the time the release bearing is blamed but it is not always the release bearing.

  • @perfectionclutch hi!!!i need help...i got mitsubishi galant 95 with automatic transmission, the engine stop everytime i use break to slow down or stop it while on reverse mode.i tried to increase the idle but it still the same.please help me!!!thanks in advance...

  • What a great video. this helped me remove and install my own transmission after a full rebuild. thanks

  • @corruptpc

Thanks. This is not one of the easiest cars that I have worked on and the hydraulic system was a bit more challanging too, I need to work on a better technique for this hydraulic system layout, big air trap on the firewall line routing.

    Gary

  • my 95 honda civic does the exact samething but i didnt think it was a problem

  • hey the perfection clutch set for the 1.6L si fits the years from 95 -00 i am currently installing one on my 93 dx bubble wit the 95 si d18z6. i also have to find an acura integra gsr shell to replace my old busted dx bubble shell that aint worth the paint thats on it but the car is almost done and hopin to take it for its first test run with th new clutch see how it runs message me if any one has this shell in trenton new jersey or text my cell 609-558-7594

  • The input shaft bearing is well known to go bad on these cars. It completely sounds like an ISB failure even before ripping it apart and sticking it to the owner. FAIL

  • @PUboiler29

    Viewers,

This is a no charge installation.

We are a clutch company not a full service repair facility and I'd like to point out one thing, we did this as a training video for a clutch installation to show proper clutch installation techniques and details. All vehicles worked on for all of these training installations are donated to us for the installation and the vehicle owner IS NOT INVOICED for the installation.

  • Fidanza aluminium flywheel FTW

  • was the clutch missing a spring?

  • @gmatamoros probably just for demonstration purposes...

  • @gmatamoros FEEL SORRY FOR THE OWNER. HE WILL HAVE TO PAY $2500 FOR THAT JOB AND BE TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIX.=(

  • @GLICIOUS21

This was a no charge installation for clutch training purposes.

    Gary

  • Awesome video! You are a great, educated technician that knows what he's talking about and can easily communicate that with others, unlike a lot of those cavemen "mechanics" out there these days that can only say "Huh, yeah, we'll fix it for $3 billion dollars."

  • You sir receive 5 stars!

  • boss as mechanic hes fast as hell and atleast know what hes talking about unlike some dumbasses that replace a clutch and fuck sumin else up in the process

  • can someone help me out...i dont have a honda but i have an 03 eclipse and need to change the clutch do i gotta take out tyhe controle arm and balls joint to remove the transmission

  • you dont wanna halfass a B16. the hard part is finding a competant mechanic. i prefer doing it myself. good mechanic tho. id let him work on mine.

  • no need to change all those things men!i have the same problem before and they only change the bearing in the clutch..after that no more crazy noise..

  • Great video on how to properly install a clutch and flywheel, not to mention on how to rip a customer a customer and poorly diagnose a noise problem. HAha!!

  • I guess I'm a little confused. I listened to the car before and after the clutch work and it sounds identical.

  • try on a 02-05 si and you will be in for a treat!!!!

  • it would be funny if it was just the cam slapping sound lol.

  • what a fuccin scam man, LMAO!!!!!

  • Nice grease job! Great instructional video on how to be a scam artist. Replaced a bunch of shit for nothing, noise still there.

I particularly enjoyed the bit about being prepared to answer the pissed off customer, that was a nice touch.

Let's try that again in the summer when it's hot outside...

  • so after you've changed all of the unessasary parts then you blame it on a liitle bit of gear box wear WAT THA FUCK.now open up the gear box again and rip the poor customer off again like you already did once .then you talk about a (pre-clutch installation test drive and you might not know everything that's goin on with it and you need to know to be prepared to answer your customers question: how come i still hear that noise? i thought it was gonna go away) i would've said u ain't gettin a dime

  • after replacing the clutch, the hydraulic system, pilot bearing, release bearing, flywheel and new tranny fluid. i can still hear the noise lol, so you just ripped a customer off for doin shit to the car which didn't even need to be done in the first place becuz those parts did not have major WEAR. you MISDIAGNOSED the problem and you say (you think the cooler temp and new honda recommended tranny fluid made a little bit of a change in how you hear the noise) so you didn't get rid of the noise..

  • Excellent attention to detail, really liked how you stressed the importance of keeping surfaces clean and on using a torque wrench properly. Well done! Now how about a video on changing an input shaft bearing?? :)

  • hello i have a similar model but it is a 1.6l D16y8 1998 honda civic ex. i was woundering what kind of chemicals did u use to clean the inside of the transaxle? nice video btw

  • you made a mistake man, when using an aluminum flywheel you should use a torque plate, this is because the bolts can damage the flywheel when you torque them down, whit a torque plate the flywheel bolts tigthen down on this ring, and save the flywheel, in addition to having the bolt come loose. Everything else is good. Nice job.

Everything else is good. Nice job.

  • how can you tell how many lb ft of torque that u are applying

  • @swagstars

That longer wrench he is using is referred to as a "Clicker" type Torque wrench.

The wrench is set by twisting the handle to the desired torque. It clicks when you have met the torque that you have set.

  • @drakezorcon thanx.....u were a big help

  • i put a 2ton truck clutch in my 95 civic, burnout all day long ;P

  • i put a 2ton truck clutch in my 95 civic, burnout all day long ;P

  • Input shaft bearing sound to me

  • excellent demonstration. thank you for the post.

  • my teg does same thing.. its clear that its the throw out bearing... i just wish i had a lift i just ordered a stage 5 cluch kit... time for boost :)

  • @chucklzslowV6 same here my teggy neeeded a throwout bearing.... same exact noise,,,noise of death and eventually when i took my foot off the clutch it died. bought a new clutch kit came in the mail yesterday!

  • Hi perfectionclutch, is this type of clutch a push-type? I have a 2006 Subaru WRX and this vehicle seems to be the one I should follow to install my clutch

    (generally speaking).

  • Mmm I think ball bearings are not good.
