  • I think if the semi trucks actually hit square and not off center of each other and the car, look closely, cause the car is off center by about 2-3 feet. (notice how part of that car is compacted perfectly). that its possible. Not to mention if you slow down those semis a bit you reduce the amount of impact thus making pancaking more possible, instead of an explosion of metal.

    I once threw a cigarette butt down on the pavement and it landed standing up. its about odds, anything is possible

  • To achieve a similar result to the commercial (which obviously faked the set-up) would be very difficult to set up accurately. For a start, you'd need at least two identical cars to drop - the first would be used purely for timing purposes. You'd also have to rig up a 4,000ft cable (or possibly several) to ensure it fell directly down rather than veer off course.

  • The vehicles used in the demolition derby should be entered together in a modern art competition, provide a catchy name like Man’s Inhumanity toward the Machine. You never know you might start a new art form. (Of course Sky net will probably send Terminators after you, but still we must suffer for our art)

  • so ya the helicopter was at 4000 feet but the car was lower than that so does that make a difference? Was the car at 4000 feet in the commercial or was the car at 3000 something feet?

  • Viewer gripe!! Okay, car started and maintained a constant velocity of 105mph travelling on the x. car 2 started at 0mph and accelerated to terminal velocity in the air. They're comparing a constant velocity vs an acceleration, and they still couldn't beat the falling car. This myth is completely impossible (I'd be skeptical even with an F-1). They should do these kinds of problems and explain the math before doing the experiment for the viewers and THEN prove why they won't work. ROCKET SLED!!!

  • @ieshghi You seriously only listen to some bad tv shows. 2 objects will fall only at the same speed if there would be NO friction. Like in vacuum. In air a stone would fall FASTER then a feather. Why? Cause of the friction. That's why a falling car would stop accelerating at some point, if the friction slows it down the same amount as the gravity accelerate it. More weight = higher top speed. Back to school dude.

  • @Sunaarashii Well, that IS correct, but in this case (car beig dropped from helicopter) the weight difference is negligable. the important thing is the position and the surface area of the object falling, because of the air resistance. Air resistance isn't much influenced by the weight of the object, since I can take a feather and a small stone of the SAME weight, and the feather wil still fall much slower than the stone, since it has a much larger surface area. Sorry to dissapoint you dude.....

  • @ieshghi like i told kafre before, you could take 2 balloons, one filled with water the other with air. Both balloons have the same size and shape. But the one with water will drop faster. Same here. With the same surface area a heavier car can reach a higher falling speed. The air friction is the same, but the heavier object has more power. Your turn dude.

  • @Sunaarashii Correct, but negligable since the terminal velocity difference is not going to be very high.

    The other thing to take into account in your example is the difference between the specific weight of water ant specific weight of air. A 1 litre ballon full of air weighs only a few grams, while a litre of water weighs a kilogram. that is about (not actual numbers) 500% weight difference. A car that weighs 10 tons (only an example) and one that weighs 10.5 is not comparable(5% difference)

  • @ieshghi Yeah, water is much heavier than air, sure. But the waterfilled balloon drops MUCH faster then the one filled with air. A car weight 0.6 - 2 tons. I don't know how much extra weight they put into the car, but it still "some" more. Even if it only 5% difference, that makes the falling speed higher. I don't know if it is a 5% speed increase or less/more. Don't ask me.

    Weight does induce faster falling in a NON-VACUUM environment, because of the higher amount of friction it causes. however it is negligible in this case since the speed difference is very small. We were both kind of right after all... Nice discussing this with you. ;)

  • @Sunaarashii No, a balloon doesn't fall "faster". It might reach it's terminal velocity faster, but it will NOT fall "faster" than the balloon filled with air. There is only a certain speed at which an object can fall, and that speed is the SAME for all objects in a vacuum. The ONLY thing wind shear does is slow down the rate at which an object reaches its terminal velocity. An object of the same size and shape, but different weight, will fall at the SAME speed.

  • My problem with this is they did not compensate for the shorter distance of the car on the groud being closer the helicopter drop height was the same.

  • @otfphotography they shorten the distance, because the car on the ground was SLOWER. But the falling the car had the same gravity, so the same speed. But... they add some weight to the car to balance it. More weight = faster fall. Also did they add the length of the rope to the height?

  • @Sunaarashii More weight does NOT equal a faster fall. Basic Newtonian laws state that all objects fall at the same rate in a vacuum. The ONLY reason an object would fall faster than another object is wind shear. Meaning more friction from wind makes it fall slower. The same car with 5,000,000,000,000,000,000 (I know it's overdoing it, but it's a point) would fall at the SAME approximate speed as the original car.

  • @kafre67151 You answered it for yourself. Basic Newton laws works only in vacuum. Not in air. If we take the friction into account, more weight allows us to reach a higher top speed. Best example: take 2 baloons. Fill one with air, another with water. Drop both of them. They don't drop at the same speed. The heavier waterbaloon can accelerate to a higher top speed. Same in this video, the "balanced" car could reach a higher topspeed, so it were faster.

Guess what? Newtonian Law: for every action, there is an equal an opposite reaction. Go put a ball on a table. Guess what? It stays still. Newtonian Law: An object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. All in an UNCONTROLLED environment.

  • @otfphotography Yes, they did. The shorter distance was to ONLY make up for the fact that the car couldn't go as fast. The fall from the helicopter would have fallen at the same approximate speed regardless of how far they dropped it from. Meaning, if they lowered the car, it would have hit upwards of 10 seconds sooner, giving entirely inaccurate results.

  • @faxepl That is due to the fact that the sound traveling through the air is significantly faster than the force of the explosion traveling through the ground creating the visible shockwave.

  • @wouldyounot11 You're saying that sound travels faster through air then solid materials? That's a joke, right? Of course the sound is edited - sound of the explosion should be heard at the time that the shock wave moves the grass near the camera.

  • @faxepl actually what causes the "shockwave" is not sound. it is the explosive force traveling through the ground. the sound is an entirely different matter and it does travel faster than the explosive force traveling through the ground... Basic Physics...and if you have ever actuallbeen near a significant explosion or sutdied basic science you would probably know that.
