Its called Jewel of Paris, on his album "The Gauntlet". Incredible song about the Hurons who were taken into slavery in Paris. The story of one small boy cared for by a Parisian woman who loved and raised him as if he were her own child. Eventually saving enough to pay for his freedom and return to the homeland he never knew. Ville St.e.Marie Quebec.
thanks .. found it after some diligent .. work.. also wanted to say after listening .. to it several times.. Is this guy Shocktower a wee tahd.. sounds like a song of social awareness to me ..
maybe it is my Algonquin blood or my Irish/Scottish blood calling out .. but it still is an excellent song of that time of a woman earning the freedom of her Native son.. save the world one step at a time ..
Wow shocktower70 - you and Stan Rogers must have been fabulous mates. You know exactly what he was thinking, how and why he wrote his songs, and how he viewed himself as an entertainer. Yep - entertainer, which he did for a living, to make money, from the working class, to feed his family. Please, post some photos, recount some conversation, preach to us about the inner thoughts of the man. I'm sure we'd all love to hear it. Or ...maybe not hey? I hear he didn't suffer fools gladly.
I'm still screaming in anger at the death of stan rogers..... Does this young man realize his resposiblity to uncover the the plight of the workeing class ???
Does Nathan view himself as an entertainer, or a possible agent of social change such as Joan Baez....His dad, Stan had the potential to return working people to Heroic status and Solidarity...
If indeed you are who you infer you are, Your dad has been missed.
hey what was the inspiration behind this song ? it is an amazing song sorta remeinds me of bruce guthros falling song !! thanks nathan for the great music keep it up .. love true stories great cd !!!!
The inspiration is "The Jesuit Relations" published c. 1685 and an account of the voyages of the French in the New World. For more, check out any info on a MicMac cheif named Donnaconna.
Looking forward to the new album and pleased to hear this will be inclulded. Hopefully you will come East for more performances. Keep doing what you do.....
Oh my goodness....if I close my eyes I can hear the spirit of Stan still singing...and yet, the voice is more beautiful....like a beautiful coastline that is touched by warm evening light...as a Scotsman I always believed that Stan should have been one of us....he sang with passion and fervour!! Nathan has that voice yet brings a softness and beauty into the lyric! As a folk fan I have found the best singer/songwriters in Canada!!
The song is called The Jewel of Paris. It is indeed a continuation of Mary's Child. I am writing the Mary's Child Sequence in three parts. For one reason or another, the kid in this story had become his own entity. The next album is likely called The Gauntlet and this song will be on it, come Hell or high water. Stay tuned and thanks so very much.
OMG he sounds JUST like his Dad!!!! Does anyone know if he has any albums out? I have a few of Stan's. AMAZING!

ITunes released "The Gaunlet" at the beginning of July. I strongly recommend that anyone who enjoys this bit buy the album, as it's beyond excellent.
(I was surprised to find myself thinking it was actually BETTER than his first album "True Stories", which was itself a great overall record.)

This is a follow up to his song Mary's Child from True Stories. Not sure of the title or if it has been recorded/released yet.
