  • Just imagine this: Kwan 1996 worlds LP, Butyrskaya 1999 worlds LP, Slutskaya 2005 worlds LP. Put these three programs together on the same WC or OG. I think it's absolutely impossible to find which one should be first, second and third. I do think that these three set the absolutely perfect example of how a ladies' LP should like. Etheral skating (Kwan), feminine sensitivity (Butyrskaya) and technical excellence (Slutskaya). Gosh, I miss those days!

  • As a spectator, I always hope all athletes do their very best. It's no fun for me to watch them fall, make mistakes or get injured. I was never a big fan of Irina's, but I have said before that she was not always well-served by her coaches and choreographers. She waited a long, long time for a night like this. For any skater this victory would be one to savor, but given what she had to endure to get there -- yet was still able to pull off that night -- it's just remarkable.

  • If you wann know how to do the 3 lutz/3 loop comination properly, look at Irina. Nobody has since done that difficuult combination like she did.

  • A very strong and powerful LP with elegance! This was by far Irina best skate ever in her long skating career!

  • You have posted enough, getrealandsee. Leave Irina Slutskaya and Michelle Kwan alone. Irina is not yours to bicker and pucker. I am sick and tired of reading all the drama you are creating in this forum. As for Irina who might be reading this. We'll see what she thinks of you.

  • TRIPLE LOOP!!!!!! LOL

  • Irina is a true champion...medical problems didn't stop her from throwing out a performance like this. Of course, I wanted Sasha to finally get a Gold at worlds but Irina deserved this win...I love her...she has such a pretty smile. Courage, honor, integrity and how sweet for her to do this in front of her home crowd...this is one AMAZING skater and woman!!!!

  • @MegaScorpionka

    Вы не правы.

    Она самая спортивная, может быть.

    Но самая артистичная - нет.

    Мертвая Бутырская и то артистичнее.

  • Great performance, to be skating through an illness and being so tired, and in front of the home crowd.I was a huge Kwan fan growing up but she always left me desiring to see more difficult jumps from her and better spins and layback spins.Irina although doesn' t have the artistry like Michelle, she can really spin and jump.Sasha is very flexible and also has beautiful layback spin but lacked consistency.

  • @beshnola Kwan is a wimpy cowardly whiner full of excuses...Irina is a true champion!

  • why the heck are they clapping in the beginning? It wasn't even right for the song.

  • I couldn't stand the british commentary, had to come watch this one.

  • Wow I love this music and she's skating so beautifully :)

  • My favourite long program from a world championships

  • Fabulous :) She has always been my favourite Russian women's skater, you can tell that she has such a passion for the sport and for performing.

  • @warriorgr Couldn't agree with you more. Perfect performance!

  • Love the combinations. Totally hate the music.

  • I have to hand it to her. Even her artistry (which is usually lacking) looked pretty good for this performance. Great job.

  • shes a great skater technicallity wise that is... :)

  • WOW !!!!

  • Irina is so courageous...has an illness...her mother is ill as well and here is the wonderful skater performing like this. OMG ....incredible...just incredible. There was an interview when she won her first Worlds in 2002 and she had to share the moment with another skater who has had ALL the breaks and none of the knocks. Way to go, Irina...awesome, simply AWESOME!!!

  • TRIPLE LOOP!

  • I've always enjoyed Irina's skating but I feel her biggest weakness over the years of her career is in her selection of music and subsequently the choreography to that music. Her programs have never seemed inspiring musically, although her skating itself is always superb.

  • She may be great technically, but absolutely no artistry/intrepration. Look at her face while she's doing her spiral sequence. She has no emotion at all.

  • @raynen2003 because she's tired but if you look at her face in the skating in between she looks exuberant and to be honest i hate the whole "look like she's been kicked really hard and is so hurt" during a spiral sequence lots of ladies have, particularly Kim Yu-na

  • Nobody can beat her. not yu-na or mao .. She is living legend !!! ♥♥♥♥♥

  • @goga587 mao asada beat irina slutskaya at grand prix final 2005-2006.

  • @yeoksamroyalvilla i know all results ;) i mean her technics her mood on the ice and ect. for me she's the best !

  • She deserved the win here, for sure. But you have to admit, she does not have the grace or line of Cohen (but few do).

  • I freakin' LOVE the way Barb Underhill says "TRIPLE LOOP" after Irina unexpected does her triple-triple around 1:30.

  • I'm tired of hearing disputes over which of Kwan, Cohen or Slutskaya deserves to be recognized as the greatest skater of their era. When I see a figure skater on the ice, I judge them by the standard Cohen put forward in footwork and grace, by the awe-inducing spirals of Kwan, and by the jumps, the power and the boundless heart of Slutskaya. We are fortunate to have lived in the days of this triumvirate, each elevated by her competition with the other.

  • @ivan09193 lol the order is simple.

Kwan- 5 World titles and 2 Olympic medals (neither gold)

Slutskaya- 2 Wrold titles and 2 Olympic medals (neither gold)

    Cohen- 0 major titles

Cohen isnt even a top 3 skater of her era. Arakawa has acheived much more, Hughes has the Olympic Gold whereas Cohen doesnt even have a World gold, and even Butyrskaya has a World title and superior longevity.

  • Life was definitely cruel for Irina Slutskaya, but she still fought like hell and it paid off!

  • Irina is a true champion! Well deserved win for her especially since she had to endure quite a lot the past couple seasons. I also love her bubbly and genuine personality :)

  • @allenglandlawns Me too! She seems so sweet and friendly, not snobby or stuck up. A total sweetheart!

  • she is the eternal queen of figure skating

  • The BEST performance of Irina Slutskaya! She is the best in the women figure skating!I proud for her!Moscow's ice take to her GOLDEN MEDAL!Я горжусь тобой Ира)

  • IDEALLLLL!!!!!!!!

  • Russia is the best <3

  • that was so amazing. she is by far my favorite female skater =] i miss her

  • I miss the old days of Kwan, Irina, and others... they all had such great, unique styles. Love Irina here; by far, her best free skate!!!!! Fabulous.

  • WOW...this woman was quite incredible.

  • Doesn't get any better than this....Irina was absolutely magnificent here. Her jumps and artistry was so stunning.

  • Wait, she did 3 triple loops? I thought that was illegal.

  • @sleepyjl77 It was 3 double loops. It's not "illegal" as such, you just don't get any credit for any that you do after the second.

  • the best program

  • Did the judges consider the 3Loop after the 3Lutz a complete one? I have seen the slow repetition a couple of times and can't make my mind about whether or not it would be downgraded (in 2010, anyway). Seeing as almost every girl today avoids combined 3loops, I'd guess it gets easily downgraded for Pre and Underrotation.

  • "TRIPLE LOOP!" I love the female commentator

  • Did she win?

  • @Menexpert Yes, She was the 2005 world champion,

  • @Menexpert Yes! It was the world championships and she won the gold after placing 9th the year before.

  • @IbeJaleel YAY! I always thought she was an underscored skater. Nice to see she finally came through.

  • Irina Slutskaya World Champion 2005 and Forever (Simply The BEST ! ) ...

  • Hi, I would like to ask somebody, if you know where I can get this music?...I really love music and performance as well. Thanks a lot.

  • @KLARCA123 Croatian Rhapsody - Maksim Mrvica :)

  • @KLARCA123 Croatian Rhapsody - maksim

  • Beautiful moment for this hard working figure skater.

  • UNFORGETTABLE PERFORMANCE!!!!! And what an ovation at the end!!!!!!!

  • Her 3 loop 2 loop combo got ZERO points (it was her third loop) and she still kicked everyone's ass. Woot.

  • The golden standard of skating...

  • i still remember the first moment my heart was caught by figure skating... that was her performance.

I want to see her passion and strength in the skaters on the rink now. how charming and lively she skates across the rink...

she's just so special to me.

is she retired or turned to be a pro skater?

  • the most successful russian lady ever!

This routine would've won the gold in torino.

  • Ирочка всегда была лучшей в мире!!!!!!!!!! the BEST!!!

  • I remember watching this in my dorm room in college. I was sobbing. I couldn't believe it. Maybe the best competitive performance by a woman figure skater EVER. Absolutely stunning. She could compete against men with a program like that. Brilliant.

  • I just had to comment here- now THIS is what I'd call a pure performance from the heart! So much fire, an elegance and finesse I hadn't seen from her before. She couldn't miss here! I think she could've won gold in SLC with this skate.

Irina- you will always be my sentimental favorite, plus I've always had a crush on you, Hehe! Your lovely apple cheeks, wish I could pinch them :)

  • I'm an Sasha fan but this program was AWESOME! She's better than MK

  • @silverwaterelement than michelle kwan she's not better but than sasha cohen ofcourse she's much better

  • THis program would've won the olympic gold fair.

    Irina is back!

  • I tip my hat to such a performance.

No doubt she was the greatest! I wish she still performed.

  • I love her final loop - it was such an expression of triumph and joy to just throw in a jump that couldn't count.

  • Was something off in this performance....despite it basically being the skate of her life?

She was doing a 3 toe-2 (toe or loop) in the Tano style at the end of this program and that didn't happen.

Plus, her usual final combination spin was cut short.

She also did three 3 loops...not sure if the first one was deducted.

  • i wish she had had those jumps in Turin =(

  • I always enjoyed watching her skate technically. I think she threw in the 3rd triple loop becaused she was worried the triple lutz/triple loop would be downgraded to a double loop. It was close.

  • She is the best figure skater!!!!!Ever!!!!!

  • IRINA SLUTSKAYA 2005 World Champion , Gold For IRINA ... IRINA SLUTSKAYA is Simply The Best , better than all the rest ...

  • I actually felt that the US commentators were sincere and objective about Irina's strengths and weaknesses. Irina, herself, acknowledged that Kwan "is a much more lyrical skater," and Dick and Peggy always talked about Irina's incredible athleticism. IMO, Irina was constantly overmarked on presentation scores, but there is no denying that this was a triumph program, and I was so happy and proud of her. She also always seemed like a cool person in real life! I miss this period in skating.

  • "Irina was constantly overmarked on presentation scores"

I dont feel so. But see, artistry cant be separated from how the moves succeded and she hits almost every position well.

But just as I said before I totaly accept if someone doesnt like her artistry.

And I didnt mean US commentators in general, I was only talking about 2006 Torino sp.

  • i want her on my side if im in trouble what a clutch skate

  • I am not a professional, but for me the best part is 4:36 - 4:56, when Irina make a "celebration" thrue the hole distance.

  • Why is she allowed to repeat the 3 loop twice. I thought, they are allwoed to repeat a jump only once?

  • yeah, she didn't get any credit for that jump like the commentator said. but i guess it was just to rub it how good she is :)

  • at most they are able to perform any triple twice.

they get penalized if they do it more than that.

  • just the best figure skater ever!!!!

  • The highlight of this clip is the commentator's scream after the triple lutz-triple loop combo. I wish the american commentators were this sincere and spontaneous with the non-american skaters.

  • Well, she really had no choice.....Slutskaya's health wasn't perfect here and nobody expected her to be strong enough to attempt a triple triple.

  • Yeah..This was her time, it would have been impossible to deny it... But if you watch the olimic sp.. I could kill those stupid american commentators... They hate Irina just because she is not american. And Im not from Russia, and she is just one of my favorites...I like Sasha Cohen very much, but its so typical: The commentators cant shut up about how good she is, even when she falls all the time...But this program was HUGE!!! And her first triple (lutz I think..) was also HUGE!!

  • @Ardenis9 LOL when Sasha falls I've seen Dick Button make comments about Sasha that have Americans angry. So what you say is not true at all. What Dick and Peggy have said about Irina is very accurate, and respectful. She has many strengths, but many weaknesses as well. She is not that high above criticism. Peggy herself said that she didn't think anyone could have beaten Irina that night, and I agree with her even though Irina is not a skater I enjoy watching very much. This was her night.

  • you said, she is not a skater?? Er.. That was a bit too hard. I never said she is above critisism. Her presentation is hard to enjoy sometimes(I like the energy radiating from her and that makes it great for me, but I totaly expect if someone says they dont like her artistry)

But its actually true that they downgrade her on so many levels. here belongs her spiral (which was better than what skaters have nowadays.) her spins (her catchfoot spins are awsome)...

  • I said she is not a skater I enjoy watching very much...I would never say she is not a skater, Irina deserves respect after a career like hers. I'm not accusing you of saying she is above criticism, but you obviously seem upset for every little thing they say. Irina has more flaws than Sasha thus she gets more criticism that's the way it goes. Her spins are very fast but other than that they aren't anything to 'wow' about. Well except for her biellmann of course, and her biellmann spiral.

  • Ok... Than I misunderstood. My bad. Spins: flexible, well centered, original, fast. equals great spin:D:D...

though I admit when she is not grabbing her foot her positions are not that good or solid at all. And they are not variated enough either.

But they are amazing. And especially her bielmann.:D We should stop this chatting btw:D:D We are both on the same page. THIS PROGRAM ROCKS!!:D

  • Yes this conversation should stop, I talk too much, sorry. xD

  • you say irina has more flaws than sasha? LOL sasha can hardly do any clean/consistent jumps. yes shes graceful and very artistic, but thats it. you said; "her spins are very fast but other than that they aren't anything to 'wow' about" just made me laugh, considering her combination spins are extremely hard. for some she might not be "artistic"- to me she is, but she's always relied on her technical abilities to make up for her presentation. her jumps, spins and speed is what she is known for

  • If you say Irina's combinations are hard than Sasha's are harder. Irina doesn't have perfect positions...Sasha does, Sasha changes positions just as much as Irina, and they are more difficult positions and better executed. The stretch on her camel, her arch in her back on that layback, and her I-spin! The only thing Irina is superior as far as spinning is her biellmann. These are all flaws Irina has that Sasha doesn't. Yes better jumps I agree on that, but not the spinning or footwork.

  • Also, she gets criticism from U.S. commentators because they feel her presentation or artistry is not good. she never gets criticism for her technical abilities. i apologize if i sound rude, i'm just expressing my opinion. i completely respect yours, even if i disagree.

  • Dear, she gets criticism because she does not have good artistry her presentation! Irina has great technique, but not presentation. Why are you arguing with me anyway...I said already that no one could have beaten Irina that day that's how amazing she was. Even Sasha couldn't have and that's coming from a big fan of hers!

  • i think artistry depends on the person, but i agree on the presentation. Sasha is a great skater & has a lot of wonderful spins and footwork, but it doesn't mean those things are Irina's flaws. every skaters has their own style and preference in spins. Irina has the bielmann and Sasha the the I-spin. i like Sasha a lot , but she's only been a few times (3) ahead of Irina. & i really didn't mean to argue with you, just saying my opinion. they're both top skaters! good day & Merry Xmas =)

  • No, maybe I should have said that they were things that Irina could have worked on to make better, such as her positions and edges. I'm sorry if I seemed overly defensive in anyway. Your right they are both wonderful skaters with amazing careers, and it should be left at that.

    Happy Holidays =)

  • @RandomMillie1991

I agree with you but for different reasons. I think when a skater skates with such joy, spunk and energy then that is an artistry all by itself.

No one will ever match Irina - she had spunk, energy, joy, and adorable apple cheeks. She had a difficult life and was frequently the underdog - someone you can really root for, in other words.

  • @jamarsano

Alright, though I don't consider Irina on the artistic side at all, I respect your opinion.

She has had a hard life and has pushed through many obstacles such as illness, and it's great that she was able to overcome that and win a World title. She definitely deserves respect, and really was one of the World's finest skaters.

  • @RandomMillie1991 u should see her interpretation of sanson and dalila (i dont remember the exactly names in english), u will be surprise, she really is an artist.

  • ...her artistry (which either judged as great ot very weak...)

But Sasha: The only bad thing they said about her was that she is incosistent, which is actually true(belive me I wacthed nearly every video of Sasha)

No one mentioned anyhing about her bodytype(that made me mad when I watched Ira's sp) or anything nasty. (I know theres nothing wrong with Sasha's bodytype)

at Torino all the nasty stuff about Ira was very well covered with sweet words, but if you look at the meaning they're evil...

  • As a big fan of Sasha trust me I know she is inconsistent, but that's not all she was criticized for. Peggy and Dick are not evil lol just very realistic. Trust me they know best. They've been around figure skating for a LONG time as skaters, and as observers. The only problem I have with the U.S commentators is Scott Hamilton who sometimes doesn't seem to know what he's talking about... ;-P

  • I know, they know.I never said they didnt. I just felt that they are not objective (which is understandable of course when it comes to compliments about us skaters, but I couldnt accept it the other way)

    I might be overreacting though:D

I dont know Scott Hamilton's voice, so I dont know anything about that...:D

  • It is true that Button can be biased, but overall even if Peggy has criticized Irina it was with all the reason. I personally always liked Peggy because she always kept Dick under control when he went to far, example 2004 Worlds when he claimed Arakawa's footwork wasn't at the level of the other skaters. It was slightly true, but he made it seem like she had terrible footwork and she didn't.

Scott Hamilton is the loud one. xD I personally love his personality, but his inexperience shows.

  • @RandomMillie1991: I agree completely! Peggy and Dick would make me mad occasionally with some of their negative comments (esp. Dick), but they were realistic. Scott really did have favorites, and it annoyed me at times, as he wasn't objective in his criticism.

  • Yea I agree :)

  • @warriorgr yes I agree I prefer to listen to canadian or british commentators they always seem a bit more genuine and less biaised.

  • woooooooooooooooooooow!! q emocion es demaciado bueno!!..... la amooo!! simpre la mejor!

  • Triple Loop!!!!!!!!!!

  • The commentator lost her crap with that one!

  • Hahahaah I love that one :P

  • XDD

    SUPER comment!!!!))))))))))))))))))))))

  • great commentating from the canadians than the nasty americans w/old man dick.

  • @simplyymyself the commentary sucks. They only comment on the jumping.

  • UAUUUUU!!!!!

  • the best :D

  • Bravo, Slutskaya !!! BRAVO !!!
