  • it's too bad the 3pt line was only introduced in Pistol's last season :P

  • Pistol Pete was the greatest offensive player that has ever and will ever play; no questiones asked. Better combination of a passer ball handler and shooter than enyone ever.

  • he was the man

  • Cousy started showtime. Pete just brought it to new heights. Dude was badass.

  • As much game as Jimmer Fredette has,and he's got loads of it,the Pistol was in a class of his won. Today's NBA would be more unwatchable than it is already without the likes of him,the Doctor,Connie Hawkins....the list is long.

    M.K.

  • @MrNotyag You never should have traded in your white sheets for that computer you have there. They looked better on you. They covered your face.

  • It is estimated that had the 3-point line existed when Pete played, his scoring average would have actually been 57 ppg.

  • Man and he was doing all this with out a 3 point line dam

  • Im only 27 so this is the era before my time...but i must say he's like a classic old record people keep sampling these days..Much respect to a pioneer and trendsetter..RIP "Pistol" Pete Maravich.

  • @MrSlik25 Pete was trully before his time.

  • wooo yo jaysigl that's neat if you can't dunk yet you have to go here today - "50inch vertical (dot) com"

    peace #VIDEOPOSTERID#

  • humlooking for a guy who knows his way around a lady's body

  • jaysigl dude, after I gained over 15 inches on my jump by finishing the workout at vert jump training (dot) com, being dunked on is nothing I have to fret over about in basketball now, heh

Pistol Pete Maravich & the Invention of Showtime Basketball

  • Everyone forgets there was no 3 point line when he did this. All the newer high scorers were with 3s. He did it all with no 3 pointers.

  • song name?

  • He can shoot like no other man alive, he could run like the wind and pass like his life depends of it. All of that without the left coronary. RESPECT THE GREATNESS

  • Yeah and he did it all with out smoking crack, raping women, dropping out of school, fathering fifty kids, not commit murder or steal anything, and not to mention rap. Just plain ole hard work, now dont that sound boring.

  • Looked to me to be the original "Hot Sauce"

  • el meyor del mundo pete maravich

  • ricky rubio better be the next maravich i wana see show time!!

  • he had the ball handling skills of a bird or magic and could take over a game like jordan. crazy

  • Pete Maravich scored 68 so easily on the Knick's Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe and Spencer Haywood, all future HOF players. He was like MJ scoring 63 on Bird, McHale and Parish. Too bad his teams did not build the right players around him, never had the management, coach or kind of teammates that Magic, Jabbar, Jordan or Bird had that led them to their championships.

  • @lakingpinas Pete doesn't need a championship to let us realize how good he was

  • I love pistol pete, he's my idol

  • nice sax riff at the end -)

  • he's like a bigger, more athletic nash

  • at 0:26 thats just sickness

  • yeh i agree

  • 1:10 was awesome

  • gq: That was the '78 Knicks with Clyde (one of the best defensive guards ever) that Pistol was pwning. He would have been the best: shoot. pass, jump. Simple game dude and he could do it all better than them all.

  • ...if Maravich was playing today he'd be playing in place of the Professor on the And 1 Tour....that's real...

  • stfu

  • he's going to the nba his year, his name's ricky rubio now

  • so, so true

  • just think if there was a 3 point line back then

  • your a stupid piece of shit retard

  • Sorry to bother you with the truth. In the NBA, Maravich was a one-dimensional player -- all offense, no defense. He was a great jump shooter and passer; no defense and he never led his teams anywhere. In today's NBA, he'd fare even worse. He was a Great college player. A high-scoring, one-dimensional NBA player.

  • The truth?

Pat Riley has said that Pete Maravich is the greatest ball handler of all time.

Do you think he's qualified to make such a statement?

    My opinion?

He was a genius. So much more talented and dedicated that today's player that it's ridiculous. 30 years ahead of his time.

  • no defense.... thats why he led in steals hahaha you don't know anything so shutup haha

  • you just don't want to give him credit because he is white!

  • @nowitzki41icon Which, if true, is absolutely ridiculous.

  • I will say only that I wish I had a player like him in my team's roster and he could stay at the corner of the court in defence the guy was 100 years in front of his age I am more than proun that my coach was calling me "pistol"

  • sounds like a ball hog

  • hes one of the few players from the psat who could strive today

yeah when he was little he always had a basketball

  • seriously

  • if Maravich played the game today he'd scoer more then 80 a night

  • imagine Oscar Robertson or Wilt playing today...

  • wow imagine if he had a three-point line...

  • thats just what i was thinking

  • Yes, he made a few 3-pointers on his last NBA season (1979-80). The NBA 3-point shot rule beginned in that season...

  • Pistol pete & Thumper Newman were the 2 best Guards of all time

  • but pistol pete was the first one to play like mj. u no what i mean like he was the first to play fancy like mj, magic, and larry bird. so i gess they where copying him kinda. and wasnt he the first to do behind the back passes and thro the legs stuff.

  • Pistol was a better overall player than MJ if one counts skills and fundamentals. Although MJ played better D. Championships are NOT a way 2 rate a player. (Then Chuck Nevitt would be a better than Charles Barkley.) Still the best overall is Kareem. End of story.

  • Pete Maravich, one of the finest basketball players ever, especially offensivly.

  • I believe Pete was the most offensively skilled player EVER and certainly the best ball handler. However, Michael Jordan, due to his far greater athleticism seems superior... BUT who knows what Pete might have done with the supporting cast guys like Magic, Bird and Jordan had. Kobe should be mentioned in this as well as Stockton, Nash, Isiah, Dr. J and David Thompson. Centers do not count! They pretty much suck.

  • I agree. Pete was "at- will" do what he pleased when he pleased on the basketball court all the time. not many players have or had that ability....all the time....jordan......and the list falls.....quickly. peace

  • very good observatioon scoobiesnax , the three point line defintitely could make up for 6 points per game, the difference would be 6 shots..but these players took many shots with amazing acuracy..both are incredible. while pete is like a wizard even better than magic Johnson ibelieve.Jordans abilities add to his prowess and tenacity. Both just magical..I try ,, iwish,, i try again..haha

  • For those who think Pistol was better than MJ, just look at the facts. FG% - MJ: .497, PP: .441. Rebounds - MJ: 6.2, PP: 4.2. Assists - MJ: 5.3, PP: 5.4. Blocks - MJ: 0.8, PP: 0.3. Steals - MJ: 2.3, PP: 1.4. Scoring - MJ: 30.1, PP: 24.2. Free Throw Pct - MJ: .835, PP: .820. Scoring (playoffs) - MJ: 33.4 (highest ever), PP: 18.7 FG% (playoffs) - MJ: .487, PP: .423.

Jordan has all the accolades while PP pales in comparison. Titles, MVPs. Look, Pistol isn't in Jordan's league, PERIOD!

  • I am a huge MJ fan, but i have to think that pete's ppg average would have been closer to MJ's if there was a 3 point line in his career.

  • I disagree with you. Look at his final three years. There was the NBA 3 point line. He only averaged 0.2 made per game. And don't say, "Well he was dealing with injuries" because there are a TON of players in every sport that would have had better careers if not for injuries. I could easily come up with at least 10 players, who would have been all world players if not for injuries. In basketball, Bill Walton comes to mind. Part of being great is actually staying on the field.

  • Pistol only shot 15 3point shots in his career. He made 10 of them.

  • Pete actually did lead the league in scoring in 1977. 31.5 points/game without a 3 point line. In 1978 Pete was again contending for the scoring title when after a 9 game winning streak he got hurt with what proved to be a career ending injury. Pete's injury came when he was just entering his prime and the Jazz would have made the playoffs. The expansion Jazz were actually 93-92 in games Pete played. His teams won 82% of the games in which Pete scored over 40. Pete the best 1 0n 5 player ever

  • Wrong again, the 3 point line only existed in his last year with Boston and Pistol shot 10 for 15, lol.

  • What about his rebound numbers? What about his steals? Blocks? Titles won? MVPs? Finals MVPs? Olympic Gold? Scoring titles? He played nine years without the three. However, so did everybody during his time. Why didn't he lead the league in scoring?

Again, you won't get an argument from me. Great, GREAT player! The problem is when someone love a player and they go bonkers. "Yeah, he's the best...ever!" Those people need a reality check.

  • Wow you seriously dont know a thing about basketball do you kid? Without Pistol there would be no Jordan, kobe or steve nash. All these guys got there games from watching pistol pete play and tryin to put his game into theirs and they admitted to doing this themselves. And in the NBA pistol had hard times so lets compare jordans and pistols college career. Pistol had 44 ppg and would have had 57 if they had a 3-point line back then.

  • First off, Jordan said he ALWAYS fashioned his game off of Dr. J. Do you actually have a link to back up your claims? Or are you just making stuff up as you go along?

Second (and I've said this already), there were *many* coaches (including Dean Smith) who wanted team ball and would not let one player dominate. Again, there's a fairly famous saying that goes, "The only man to hold Jordan under 20ppg was Dean Smith."

  • Again, if you want to use college ball as the end all and be all regarding how great a player is overall, then I guess Larry Johnson, Greg Anthony, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laitner and Grant Hill were some of the greatest players ever, right?

Again, lets judge how players played on the highest level, playing against the best players every day. Too many variables as to why I won't look at college as the end all and be all.

  • Grant Hill is pretty damn good... or was, but the rules in the NBA make it easier for athletic players to do well. I wonder if that is why FOREIGNERS are beating us in the olympics???

  • Let's look at your statement that PP would have gone from 44 to *57* per game if there was a 3 pt line.

Let's say he made 16 fgs and went 12-16 from the foul line every game. He'd have to hit *13* 3s EVERY GAME to get to 57! So are you saying that *all* of his shots were from deep? He would make 3 2s a game and 13 of his shots would be 3s? Lololololol!!!!!!

But, of course, *you're* knowledgeable about basketball, right? You might want to apply some of that *knowledge* to your poor math skills!

  • lol, have you never seen bill waltons interview when he discussed the maravich biography, the guy who the biography went back to every game pete played and counted up all the 3's he would've made, he would've made 13 3's a game actually, good math. don't doubt for a second that a player like pete couldn't drop a 3 without a seconds hesitation, you do realize how much of his life was spent with a ball right?

  • Dude, Dale Brown charted every Pistol game when he got to LSU and Pistol averaged 13 3 point makes PER GAME past the 19' 9" line. It's mind boggling but true. Search youtube for bill walton, pete maravich you will see Bill Walton talking about it. Pistol AVERAGED 13 3 point MAKES per game at LSU.

  • What they can't factor into that is with no incentive to shoot from that deep, he just naturally made 13 shots that deep each game by chance. Well, if he had known that the deep shot was worth 3 points instead of 2, he may have bombed 20-25 of them per game!

  • MJ is defeinently the greatest playerof all time, but if you look at MJs early career compared to Pistols they are pretty identical. I'd say the thing that seperates hem is MJ staying health and the bulls giving hima decent supporting cast.

  • I disagree with you. Jordan averaged 28.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 5.9 apg 84.5% from the line on 51.5% shooting HIS ROOKIE YEAR! What year did PP have like this?

If you're trying to say that Jordan didn't have the titles early on and that's the comparison you're making, fine. Of course, nobody wins a title by themselves. You need a supporting cast. But let's put it like this. Jordan won six titles with Bill Cartwright, Luke Longley and Bill Wennington at center. 'Nuff said!!!

  • Pete's rookie year was 23.2ppg...without the 3-point line.

  • one of the greats

  • And he wasn't afraid to pass the damn ball. That's what set him apart. You could easily add 24 points to what he put up that night. But he passed the ball.

  • I'm not comparing Pistol to anybody else. All I'm saying is: 68 points from all over the court between the baseline and the half-court line. Dropping bombs from downtown before the three-point line existed. The man was certainly one of the very very best. RIP Pistol.

  • Maravich owns the NCAA scoring record, which will never get touched. Before the college 3 point line, and only 3 years of eligibility at the time. His pro career won';t shine as much because the dude was playing drunk and/or hung over for most of it. Plus he was playing for the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Jazz. They both sucked the big one in the '70s.

Archie Manning was the best quarterback to have never won the Super Bowl, and Pistol was the best to never win an NBA championship.

  • pistol pete was the best ever.... of his time

  • Why does he look like he's looking at the ball when dribbling?

  • Jordan average 1.6 bpg one year. Heck, the majority of CENTERS don't get that many blocks per game! Pistol's best year was 0.4. He averaged more rebounds than Pistol as well. Jordan holds the career playoff scoring average (33.4 I believe). Again, I'm not knocking Pete. But the problem is when people want to start rewriting history. "Yeah, Pistol was the best...EVER!" Reality doesn't back up that statement.

  • 68 points without the 3 point line = win. ya, the 3 point line is rather new.

  • Yea I agree with you absolutely. Statistically speak the Pistol was nowhere as great as MJ. I referred to him merely has a phenomenal ball hander who unique style revolutionized dribbling in the NBA.

  • Agree with the point, but you can't compare stats either for two different eras, the type of game that was played was way different along with all the foul calls in today's league as well as no 3 point line from back then (you included the scoring average, not me).

  • could you put any more generic music?

  • NOT BETTER THAN KOBE BRYANT!

  • at least he doesn't rape people

  • who are you trying to refer too?

  • the dude that thinks kobe is better

  • What gift from God you are and were to us Pete.

    God bless you.

Im sure your up in heaven playing HO.R.S.E. with God. And I ain't saying who's winning but if I here you are ............it won't surprise me.

Thank you Thank you Thank you

  • why would you isult God like that?

  • Why would you "isult" us with your comment. "IF" God exists i doubt he would care about a trivial pointless comment among men.

You rock for not being able to spell and trying to be pompous.

  • I bsaw Pete play in person and he was the greatest ball handler in the history of the game. The ONLY player better than Pete was Lew Alcindor!!!

  • you mean KAREEM ABDUL JABAR!

  • Allāhu Akbar

  • Pistol Pete was the BEST player to ever play the game. He was 100 times better than Jordan and Bird. He was victim of playing in an era that would not accept his style of play. His coaches and teammates didn't understand what the future of basketball was supposed to be, but Pistol Pete did, just like his father Press did in the early 20th century. RIP Pistol Pete.

  • Amen. The most talented player that ever played in the NBA.

  • Everybody and his grandmother is better than Jordan! What are you basing your statements on, because the facts don't come close to supporting your statements.

Jordan averaged 30+ppg for his ENTIRE CAREER! He won 7 consecutive scoring titles, five mvps (should have been eight), six finals mvps, rookie of the year and 2 olympic gold medals. Heck, he even lead the league in steals once and won defensive player of the year! A defensive player of the year AS A TWO GUARD!!!

  • damn that man died to early

  • He was truly a dribbling wizard.

  • Pistol probably woulda been with larry and reggie for most 3's if they had a 3 point line back then. His shot was just so precise.

  • basketball iq of jordan and creativity of magic

  • i saw on a different vid on youtube pete almost dunking ,it was the closest there is to dunking but still a layup?

  • funny all the ignorant street ballers think cuase he white hes gabage or that stuff is iold and that 49 points ina game in nuthin but there was no 3 and also that stuff was something bball aint seen yet

  • Pete did things with a basketball that we will never see again.

  • Nobody knows him??? Spend some time learning the history of the game.

  • pete is sick, is style seem to be the same as mj, magic and some how bird... these 4 are the greatest of show time players.

  • pete and m.j.they're what basketball is all about!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pete and his "AIRNESS" ,nobody got close to both of them!in terms of contribution and to be a good ambasssador in the world of basket ball!!!!!!

  • Pete could do anything with a basketball.

  • MJ and pistol pete - best 2 to play the game imo

  • damn hes my idol

  • The Pistol is by far the greatest ball handler the NBA has seen hands down. Name a single player who has more offense weapons. Don't say Jordan or Stockon. Pistol was in a league of his own help revolutionizing the game.

  • i think iverson (allen)

  • Allen Iverson? Don't get me wrong he is an more than capable ball handler but he is no where near the genius of the Pistol. Besides, Iverson more of a scorer with a bit of crossover.

  • Pete maravich invented the cross over dribble

  • You know, it's great that you love Pete so much, but why not just look at things objectively. Jordan was a fierce competitor (and winner, the two most important things to me), scored a better average (with a MUCH better shooting percentage, btw). Won more scoring titles, mvps, you name it, he has it over on Pete. Simply look at the numbers. There's not a single number he has over Jordan.

So what criteria are you using to say that he has more offensive weapons than Jordan? Be objective!

  • 68 points without the 3 point line = win. ya, the 3 point line is rather new.

  • Pete is Serbian!!!

  • Maravich is Serbian

  • (76-77) The following season was Maravich's finest as a professional. He saw action in 73 games and led the NBA in scoring with a career-best 31.1 p p g. He scored 40 or more points 13 times, the most in the NBA that season and he led the league in total points (2,273), field goals attempted (2,047) and free throws made (501). On Feb. 25, 1977, he scored 68 points in a game against the New York Knicks despite the efforts of defensive ace Walt Frazier to bottle him up.

    Any more doubts?

  • legend

  • Are you kidding me maravich is not at all overrated... Have you even seen him play before? Watch some damn videos.

  • and 1 cant touch that

  • The guy should have died before 20. He had a defective heart, missing an artery that fed his heart with blood. That he played black or white doesn't make sense to me. Great player,

  • Song Please?

  • World's greatest offer of love and salvation given to anyone who will believe: The Gospel according to John chapter 3 verse 16. [For God so loved [you] that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.]

  • What doesn't get mentioned about the 70 pt game vs. the Knicks is 1) he was being guarded by Walt Frazier, who was supposed to be the best defender in the game at the time; and 2) that was BEFORE there was a 3-pt shot and Pete hit MANY shots in that game from behind that range. It probably would've been around a 75 point game under today's rules.

  • everybody wants to forget a cracker can play like that.

  • Excuse ME ??? What is that supposed to mean?

  • i dont know if yer talkin to me, but my comment concerned that i was listening to bob costas who must have said about twenty times that this guy "played black". Of course thats a stupid comment. but costas has built his life on trashin white folks...so..

  • hmmmm ! Point well taken. Bob Coastas always reminds me of the short guy who always wanted to "fit in". Either on a basketball team, or any sport. And he was this rich kid who tried to "fit in" by using phrases such as "Let's bust a move". Then he would go home to his rich house and the servants would ask him what he wanted for dinner.

Also notice that Costas never talks about the internals of the game itself. He's never "in-the-present" moment

  • haha! yer right. Just this morning his radio spot comes on and he's talkin about ken burns movie on PBS right now. and in the very end he's say "but the most compelling voices were those of african americans who experienced racism during the war." Like no shit bob it was the fuckin forties!

  • and i aint takin nothing from em...but WWII kinda was about racism if it was about ANYTHING. so like you said, its like the guy doesnt have any real understanding of the internals of basketball..and alson WWII. he seems to think scratching at old wounds is good for his ratings. pistol pete, played basketball pete way..not "like a black player".

  • Exactly !!!

  • How true.

  • Hey everyone! It's 11:45 P.M. right now. Still June 22. I want you guys to know that today is Pete Maravich's birthday! The best basketball player ever! My favorite also! He dedicated his life to basketball to be in the NBA, and he did! Celebrate! WIsh him a happy birthday, because he is in heaven right now, looking down on us. R.I.P. Maravich, and happy 60th birthday!

  • Go to AOL video and type in Pete's name. The first two videos are great "The story of Pete Maravich" and a short "hightlight" film. In the highlight film Pete takes a jumper from the corner which the defender attempts to block. Pete's reaction will make you smile.

  • yep. it did

  • Doesn't matter who you win against. He won the championships. A 72-10 season? Not just that but the individual accolades. 5 MVP's, 6 Finals MVP's, Defensive Player of the Year, led Chicago in assists and steals. Pistol Pete doesn't even compare...

  • I remember watching pete in new orleans, was allot of fun just seeing him enjoy himself so much.

  • (Taken from the book "Maravich") At the end of his career playing on a bum knee as a Celtic during their run for the best record in the East-Maravich shot 7 for 8 including a winning 3 pointer in the 4th qtr.

  • This was a game against the Wash. Bullets. Kevin Grevey who played in that game said: "The combination of things Pete could do was deadly...I've played against Jordan, Magic and Bird and Pete was by far the best player. He had it all."

  • Watch the "Pete Maravich Plays HORSE" video on YouTube. His last shot says it all. As Jack Nicholson said to Pete after Pete dropped 46 against Kareem and the Lakers: "Past, present or future, no one can carry your jock."

  • When Pete played for New Orleans Pete was the only guy on that team - save for two short years with Truck Robinson - who could really play. In the games Pete played for the Jazz (excluding the games he missed), their record was 93-92. The Jazz were one of the most successful expansion teams in NBA history.

  • Of course if you are talking about who had a more successful career, did for all the reasons you mentioned. However there were reasons this. Although Pete was drafted by a very good Atlanta team with 2 or 3 all stars, as Jerry West said Pete had more pressure on him than any rookie who ever entered the league.

  • Sorry. That should have read "Jordan" did.

  • Pete was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks a veteran team, with a number of All Stars none of whom made more than 60 thousand. Pete was paid around $400,000 as a rookie before he ever played a game. Because Pete was white he was resented by his Afro-American teammates who considered it unfair and a form of racial bias.

  • Not only was he resented by his teammates, Pete had to contend with the hostility of the players in the league. Pat Riley stated in the "History of the NBA that there were 250 guys in the league who were ready to knock Pete down every time he dribbled between his legs, behind his back or made a fancy pass. Jordan was welcomed to the Bulls and accepted by the rest of the league. Maravich's skills and pay (for a guard and a rookie) were unusual, and his style of play resented and ridiculed.

  • Pete was more SKILLED than any player that ever played He did not have the most successful career for the reasons stated and others not stated. Note on Jordan-when he left the Bulls, the next season they won over 50 games and almost when to the finals without him. when Bird sat out a year, the Celtics went from first place in their division with over 50 wins to a 41 and 41 season.

  • How about Rick Barry. He's the only player to lead the NCAA (37 ppg) ABA (34 ppg) and NBA (35 ppg) in scoring. He is the only player to average 40 points a game in an NBA final against a team considered one of the top 5 or 6 teams of all time. Wilt's 1967 Sixers. Rick also won a championship playing with a team of role players. Something only Bill Walton was able to accomplish.

  • And by the way it really does matter what kind of teams you win a championship against. Dr.J. Wilt, Bill Russell, Bird, Magic, Detroit and Isaiah, even Rick Barry (with role players) had to win championships against teams that had won or would win championships.

  • you know enry fact about every player its really cool 514stop

  • Jordan was not the best ever, and Maravich was a better talent. Jordan's championships came when Bird, Magic, and Dr.J were all past their prime or retired. If Jordan's prime was at the same time he would have won one, maybe two, championships. The Pistons kicked his ass in the 80s and they weren't even as good as the Celtics were. I'm sorry, but beating teams in the finals that are led by Clyde Drexler or Shawn Kemp is not that impressive.

  • Valid points. However, the general consensus is Jordan-I don't agree, but that is the general thought concerning "the best ever". (At least whenever polls are taken.)

  • You don't seem to get it. One season in a career with 30 ppg, and it requires 28 shot attempts per game. Maravich never even shot for 47%. How much is it to ask for 47%? Jordan never shot as BAD as Pete until he was a 40 year old.

  • Respectfully, I don't think you seem to get it. David Thompson, certainly had the same if not better tricks than Jordan. Kevin Loughery, Dr. J's coach in the ABA, said that the Dr. did things that were as spectacular as Jordan...but no one, I repeat, no did the things that Pete did before or after Pistol came into the league. Again, my argument is not that Pete was a better player, but more skilled.

  • I have cited the best coaches and ball handlers in the game as proof that Pete was a more skilled passer and ball handler. The differences in their shooting percentages is because of the different shot selections. MJ had the ability to go inside and play a post up game when he was having a bad shooting game.

  • You have also not responded to the fact that much of your information is wrong cited below. The consensus is that Jordan is the greatest player to ever play the game. However you will never find Former NBA players or coaches claiming that he was a more skilled ball handler, passer, or creative offensive player than "The Pistol." That is my point. Jordan, like many others was exciting, in the air, but Maravich because of his unique skills generated excitement every time he touched the ball.

  • Watch the "1989 Highlight Reel" on YouTube. Pete is on the break and someone tries to steal the ball. Pete dribbles behind his back and appears to not have control as he dribbles away from the middle. Lou Hudson continues to run towards the basket and Pete, never looking up and moving away from the play, flips the ball over his shoulder and Hudson takes the pass and scores. Unique.

  • I cite the 1989 Highlight Reel to demonstrate Pete's unique abilities. Pete could see everything on the court and throw a great pass leading to an easy basket despite a good defensive play that forced him to dribble behind his back. He deceived his opponent by appearing to lose control of the ball and made a spectacular pass-not to be fancy- but deceptive. He used the good defensive move of his opponent against him.

  • Another testimony by someone who should know taken from a recent edition of ESPN Insider- Bill Walton on Pete Maravich: "Pete was like Wilt Chamberlain. If they played in the era of ESPN, no one else would ever get on. .. he changed basketball forever. No one that I've ever seen had the accuracy or the skill that Pete Maravich was able to dial up on command, through a lifetime of perfection through practice, creativity through imagination and visualization." Bill saw Jordan.

  • I'm even getting sick of seeing my posts so I can imagine what the rest of the the YouTube Jordan and Maravich fans must feel. Thanks for the discussion and let's agree that his Airness was the best player ever. My real hero is not Pete Maravich, but the Lord and Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, who saved his life and his soul.

  • MJ WAS unique in his athletic abilities. I don't care if David Thompson was gravity defying, no one had all the tricks in the bag like Jordan. No one had such a complete all around game. Once again scoring average is not evidence that counters Maravich shooting a ridiculous number of shots while shooting worse than his team. THAT is the real evidence. His team mate scored more than him that season solely because he shot better, not because he shot more.

  • You're pretty much posting subjective viewpoints. Bottom line

    Career shooting percentage

    Jordan - 50%

    Maravich - 44%

Jordan - shot better than his team

Maravich - shot worse than his team

Jordan - the last guard to shoot in the top 15 in the league with the centers

Maravich - shot the league average
