Hear hear! what a fabulous clip explaining the samples. At the time Avalanches was just released it was a mind boggling experience for me to unraffle the samples. I came up with just the one of Klaus Wunderlich. What a DJ huh? hahahaha
I am always exploring new music .... from being a gangsta rapper in high school to a college grad soon.... amazing how life passes by and changes. Ricky thank you so much for doing the work and finding the samples! Just turned 23 today and at 4:30 in the morning , i'm treating myself to the best present anybody can ever receive....... I read the comments and try to picture what walks of life people come from and how they felt like when these songs came out... must have been good times.
Thansk truly for this. do you know how many bands/songs ive discovered from bands such as daft punk and the avalanches sampling some great disco and melodic tunes. i fuckin love it. thanks for the video
Wow dude, how did you find all of this? You must have a SUPER mind to know all those different songs and then be able to bring them all up like this after hearing them all mushed up together in a song.
how the hell did all the notes match, thats amazing work. its hard as hell to even match 2 different samples. this is why these people are master at sampling.
@bestialoculapsus Keep at it, I've been trying to find out for a long time as it seems to have generated a lot of people using the expression. Good work - unbelivable that these songs have been sampled together, imagine what some of the original artists, such as a small time band like the main attraction must be thinking!!
Excellent song, really well put together. And thanks for posting this, I find it really interesting to see where all the different parts came from! Great video.
thanks a lot for this post. The Klaus Wunderlich song in the end is incredible... It's a great track with the uncommon fusion of melodic sensibility, dreamy vibe and a great cheesiness with a precise funky rhythm. Ok, I'll rest my case... great post, this really shows what a good job the Avalanches has done.
True dat about 'Girl Talk'. All my friends were going nutty over his work freshman year of college; I couldn't listen to his stuff for more than a moment. I could never really describe why-- until now. His mixes are too pop-y-- they lack the richness, the warped clarity and distortion that past artists like DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin and The Avalanches deliver whenever they sample something. I guess I tend to gravitate more towards more controlled, orchestrated sampling.
Hey, Rickydown..there's a sample that I think might be hidden or uncovered yet. It sounds like "(can't quite understand it) makes me smile" if listened closed to. Think you can track it down? Or it might be something original from them, I dunno. x: Either way, good work. ^u^
This is great, I'd love to see more of these. I have to say, even the most hardcore head, whatever they think of The Avalanches, couldn't knock the incredible sampling demonstrated on this track, and the whole album. They constructed Since I Left You out of a comparatively huge collage of sounds and made it sound effortless.
This is great, I really enjoy these videos thank you! I've always been interested in hearing where each sample came from in the album, really makes you appreciate The Avalanches that much more knowing the amazing songs these samples turned into.
thank you so much for this!! This has been on my playlist for almost 8 years and I absolutely love how you broke it down into simple steps. You can see how much craftsmanship and raw talent went into making this jewel.
Rickydown, how come the version here in this video has the full sample of Rogers and Hammerstein's "Younger Than Springtime" (at 0:30)? I have the original version of Since I Left You, and I can't hear that sample.
The sample of "Younger than Springtime" wasn't able to be cleared for the album I believe. A version with the sample intact can be heard in their "Gimix" mix, you can get it off their website.
The sheer amount of sampling that made up their album astounds me. It's not just a bit here and there, it's a TON in every second you hear. It's like they literally bought out all the records in a store and mixed them together. (They actually did just go through scores of records in a day to see what they had to work with.)
I've listened to this song so many times, that the pitched up part of the "Main Attraction" song sounds normal to me. Such a great song, and album. Musical genius.
Wow, this is really, really, really interesting. Considering how the wikipedia article for this CD says that this whole album by the Avalanches probably contains somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,500 samples. Thank's a lot for putting this together. This is so cool!
this is just one of those albums where the impact just cant be made again
the people sampling and putting this together were just well...in the zone, i can't think of another word for it.
its just when you think of artists like girltalk who are trying to make music through the same concept, it just fails and lacks the the musical knowledge that the avalanches possessed in finding these samples.
exactly. what gregg gillis does requires incredibly complex knowledge of DJ equipment and music software. which is precisely why he is so popular, because what he does is extremely difficult. so before you judge an artist i suggest that you have at least a basic knowledge of what they do past the obvious. i am above you both intellectually and physically. you are an ignorant child in the world, a cockroach groveling in the dirt of society. a nothing
Vous recherchez un talisman pas encore jugé mai soient sur le terrain même si tu est dans le besoin la perle que vous cherchez est un gode parce qu'on aime à brouiller pénis dans la bouche
@Vandatta1 ive heard some of this girltalk stuff and its just not in the same league as the avalanches, just a load of cheesy turd , the jive bunny of sampling.. if your gunna sample and use the idea of sampling and the culture then at least respect it :)
@Vandatta1 so true. i enjoy girltalk, but in reality his music is just kinda gimmicky, a bit like many of the other mash ups floating around on the net. the avalanches are in a completely different league
@Vandatta1 I agree. I tried getting into Girl Talk, but in all honesty, it was nothing really special. The Avalanches take sampling to a whole new level...they create entirely new pieces of music. It's truly breathtaking.
@Vandatta1 Well, wait a minute, I love this album and I am not a huge fan of Girl Talk, but it's a little unfair to levy that argument against GT. He's specifically trying to do music that samples currently popular songs. The Avalanches have much dustier fingers. If there's someone you're gonna compare them to, it's gotta be like, DJ Shadow, The Go! Team or maybe The Kleptones if you really want to compare against "bastard pop".
@Vandatta1 What girl talk does is different than sampling and I guarantee he would be the first to admit it. He does mash-ups which is basically remixing songs in to each other. Sampling is taking something old, obscure, and cryptic and then chopping and screwing it up to make something new. Since I left you in my opinion is an absolute masterpiece of sampling. In 300 years it will be an artifact
