@FlamingBat I would say those are real-life victims. I'm sure those are archive pictures of bodies found during the conflict. Besides, you can tell because they are all in black and white, which shows that they might be newspaper pictures.
Archbishop Romero did not deserve to die. However, would we have known of his work for human rights if he had not been maytred? I don't know. I like to think that he would be.
I hate this part when he's shot. I felt so bad the first time i saw it...
people like him dont deserve to die. We need a Romero in every country in the world, i may not know who am i gonna be in some years, but i do know who i'd want to be like.
@HedgecockFamily God doesn't take the good, and God didn't take Romero's life, either. In case you missed it, a man pulled the trigger, a man killed Romero. God did not ask him to, and God did not want him to, but a MAN killed Romero.
Excellent movie. You really have to hand it to Romero. He was a true hero in the truest sense. He had to be terrified, petrified beyond belief. But it didn't stop him from spreading the message of love. Amazing story. RIP Romero.
my uncle was Rutilio Grande the first priest killed in the film I was told the atrocitites which occured to the people I am proud of all those who fought for the right of freedom god be with u todo mi pueblo Salvadoreno los quiero con mi alma
@TheFinalAlice That is very true, but you miss the point of this movie and what it's message was. It's about a brave man who was willing to put his life on the line for what he believed: to prevent the systematic disenfranchisement of the overwhelming majority of the Salvadoran people by a small elite. He was fighting for freedom and democracy.
@videoman10 I understand. This was merely a statement to the comments about how all rich people are terrible. In Father Romero's world, the rich-poor balance was corrupted and filthy; I realize that this is a terrible scenario. I wasn't commenting on the movie. I was commenting on the limited view of those who hate all rich people. So long as a balance can be maintained, it's not a sin to find success financially. I hate corruption, and I'm not trying to defend El Salvador's villains.
don't see it that way, there are many rich people who have done so much good, many of them built Churches and gave land for Churches to be built on, many donated large sums to build large institutions. What this film is portraying is that there are those Rich and GREEDY men who want Power but not to use it for good but to use it to become richer and richer, We must acknowledge that our wealth and power comes from God alone.
Very nuanced view. I'm a little hazy on the ins and outs of liberation theology, and I understand there's still quite a bit of debate on the extent to which Ven. Archbishop Romero came to embrace it; but the Paulist Fathers who made the film seem to show him steering a middle path. He seems less offended by an unequal distribution of goods than the determination of the elites to disenfranchise the poor -- if necessary, by violence.
@moogamax i agree man. I wrote a paper at school on this movie and El Salvador, and it becomes clear at least in the film that if Romero is to be called a liberation theologian, it ust also be denoted that he was of a more moderate strain of it then other priests (like some in the movie) who joined the geurillas rather than condemn the whole conflict
