Hey don't laugh, at our cabin DEEP in the sticks there is no high speed internet and all the house gets is a phone line in and if I want to get to the internet I have to use dialup and at 52K (which is good for dialup) forget any kind of video, streaming or otherwise. If I want high speed I have to drive 10 miles to the "town" to go to the mom&pop cafe to get 400K wireless.
@ernieerniez: in the United States. It's a "vacation home" we own. It's located in a steep mountainous area where getting satellite tv is even difficult. Because it's mountainous and remote the phone carrier Verizon doesn't offer DSL and there is no cable in the region either. A local internet provider offers a type of "wireless" DSL internet but our cabin is in a valley and the mountains block the signal so thus if we want to go to the internet it's dialup or 10 mile drive to the "town".
@lukebccb Gosh! So if it's vacation home why don't you enjoy lack of civilization? If I was you I would say fu*k off to all silicon-digital world for a vacation time;)
@CKproductions111: cause the dwelling is in a valley surrounded by mountains the cell signals are blocked. Verizon has the best coverage of any of the major carriers and even Verizon phones can't get a signal at the cabin.
nostalgia is fun, but our memory tends to forget the bad parts. For instance, the long distance charges, the busy signals, the 16k connections, ah yea, those were the gold old days. I remember we used to turn on the dial up internet when we got home from school early in the afternoon (on fridays mostly) so that by the time we wanted to use the internet that evening we were already logged in and wouldn't risk the chance of getting a busy signal or a terrible connection.
@japierce15 16k connections? haha, you're cute. When I was on BBS systems in the early-mid 90's all I had was a 2400 baud modem. 1MB/hr. I got lucky in that the town I lived in had some free lines into a larger one nearby with 2-4 BBS systems, including 1 setup at the HS. We had Prodigy but I was only allowed to dial into that once a weekend since it was long-distance. I finally was able to buy a 19.2k modem when I turned 16 and could drive to a job. But then it was all Internet. :(
It is painful watching this video and hearing the dial up sounds! LOL! Such sweet agony back then.....and just unimaginable now! I loveeeeee my cable! But back in 1997 when I got my Packard Bell 100mhz (wow) first used p.c., it was awesome! The waiting and all of it! How things change!
I don't know. I love those BBS screens . That was art in my opinion. It made you feel in a different world . Nowadays with all these super hi res webpages i can't detach from the real world, dunno if you get what i mean. Probably i m just getting old.
@dataviruset You're absolutely correct. I made a mistake in this video. Got to correct that slide and re-upload it. It should be It should be "486DX/4 100MHz" instead of "486 MHz processer." It is very quick with Windows 3.1.
man, I wish there was a way I could use this! I'm 18 and never actually got a chance to check this out during my childhood... how would one go about achieving this? I really want to see what it's like!
There are many BBS's still operating - go to Google and search "Dial Up BBS Numbers" and you'll find lots of numbers to use. Many are long distance so be careful of running up long distance phone bills. Call during weekends or off-peak time.
Compaq Contura 430C intel 486DX4 100MHz 8MB RAM by default (max. 32MB) about 500MB HDD from factory 10,4" Color Screen (430C = DSTN , 430CX = TFT) got the 430CX with 32MB RAM and a 1,6GB HDD :) still works great in WfW 3.11 or NT 3.51 :D and the battery is easy to "fix" (replacing the cells inside the battery pack) 4 1/2 hours battery lifetime again *yay* i'm using it for old DOS games :D
It is a old Compaq laptop - it was made in the early 1990s. It has a beautiful color screen (for it's age). I have made a few repairs to it - it works great!
Such horrible memories of dial up Dx took forever and was slow as FUCKK

486 MHz? I don't think so. An Intel 80486 between 16-100 MHz more likely...

You'll have to install Windows 3.1 onto a computer, get the modem to work with Windows 3.1, get the terminal software, and find a BBS to dial up.

486 does not mean 486 MHz! It's the 80486 series of Intel CPUs that came before the first Pentiums. It's probably 33 or 66 MHz lol
