It commemorates the Prussian victory over Austria in 1866 at the battle of Koniggratz and was a standard march of the Imperial German army. Might even be used by the modern Bundeswehr for all I know

A very intelligent observation....However, I believe that Austria was ruled by the House of Habsburgh, while Prussia was ruled by the House of Hohenzollern. If being of German blood might have come into play, maybe there would have been diplomacy, but that wasn't the case, as Prussia was looking keep Austria out of the federation that Prussia was looking to unite.
