This was so touching. Not a mean word . I cried too hearing Flair share his thoughts about Harley. And Race looked like a wide eyed kid, actually his face has gotten softer with age like life is finally looking good despite his massive injuries. Rick of course his features puffed up due to much drinking...but hey, who's perfect? Thanks for sharing...
what happened to this Ric Flair??? It seems like in the last couple years SINCE this time - he has become cocky and a complete asshole bitching and moaning about everything.
That graphic pisses me off though ... It says "8 Time EX Nwa Champion" .... U don't say that!! It should have just read "8 Time NWA Champion" .. Am I being picky??? lol
@akschenk Not at all....you have a valid point!! They don't call former presidents the "ex-presidents". President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush.......Harley Race and Ric Flair? NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONS!!!
So cool to see Ric Flair be undeniably human and sentimental about another adversary/friend. For all his swagger, this interview betrays his image and shows him to be a classy (even sensitive) guy. Nobody rocked the interview like 'ol Slick Ric. Woooooo! Big props to Harley Race, too. Pure class. Great to hear them be so open about what happened behind the scenes.
u know u see these wrestlers on TV beating the shit out of each other talkin mad shit 2 each other , then outside the ring, theyre just nice guys. Ric Flair seems 2 be a very emotional guy.
I read where Vince McMahon offered Harley a ton of money back in 83 to ditch the NWA title and starcade and come to the WWF,but Harley being the man he is refused to do it,and hurt the NWA.
@cbaldwinjnr a very true and very sobering thought....The indis is the only way to get Talent that really care about the buisness I would have thought but Vince likes to push the muscle men.
@beautifulsarah100 I had the honor of seeing them at the old omni back in the early 80's when I was a kid (34 now) and I don't remember much of the card but Flair and Race was the main event and I remember it like it was yesterday and it was amazing.
@beautifulsarah100 I was there In St Louis when rick Beat Harley Race for the title. the place was electric!!! I was there for the rematch also...I was best man and part of the party was taking the guys out for the match. Also i remember when Randy Savage wrestled in Kentucky and Elizibeth was the sports announcer.
I think Harley was spot on when he said the Wrestlers do too much in the ring and that they shouldnt let the fans control what they do it should be the Wrestlers controling the fans emotions.
Nwa wouldnt be the same as a full fledged wrestling organisation today. They have tried to do it several times and it just flopped. The name will always have value but unless its behined somebody with money the ability the market talent and market there product then they will become another WCW at best.Unless they have a buisness plan and a foothold on what fans want as an alternative then it wont really work.It needs to be more then wrestling it needs to be good storylines aswell.
Kayfabe is the real reason why this era of wrestling isn't realistic. If you're going to watch 'wrestling', you might as well watch the amateur stuff...people know it's NOT REAL. So this idea of 'wrestling' is not realistic IMHO. The reason why the NWA (particularly Mid-Atlantic and Georgia Championship Wrestling) was so emotional was this idea that there was realism to these people. That is long gone. The NWO gave you an illusion that the WWF(E) was literally infiltrating
...WCW. That is why it garnered so much heat (along with Hogan's heel turn of course). But McMahon, for all the hatred some have of him, forever changed how pro wrestling is looked upon. This idea that you can ever return to the days of TBS at 3:05 PT on Saturdays...it's just not happening. Not only that, but guys get into the 'business' for all the wrong reasons. It's another vehicle to stardom...guys don't live pro wrestling anymore.
@cbaldwinjr Let's just say I'm not a kid anymore.... but if wrestling today was like it was in the 80's, especially NWA Mid Atlantic and TBS style, I know I would still be a fan. I can't watch this era's pro wrestling. I could go on a very long rant about today's product but I can tell were on the same page.
These two, and their feuds, set a standard for professional wrestling. They defined story telling. They set the bar for cutting promos. They had a natural chemistry working in the ring together. I don't think there's anyone that can do that now.
Loved the genuine respect and admiration these two legends have. They represent the best of what pro wrestling used to be. A shame it can't be that way again.
You can tell there is real love and a real bond between these two men. I can't help but think of how nice it would've been if they had faced off a few more times, maybe even exchanged the belt a time or two more. It would've been magical.
I have much respect for Harley Race a great competitator, But as far as Flair is concern. I think he is a glory hog, not as much as Hogan but still. Race knew when to stop being active when will Flair learn? I don't want him to get seriously hurt but he needs to stay out of the ring all together.
Why doesn't WWE acknowledge him as such?...In the Flair retirement thingy after WM23...HHH said "7-Time World Champ"...I think even PWI even acknowledges that short-lived (a few-or so-days during a tour of Austrailia/New Zealand & The South Pacific) reign...Even Harley said it during the Bobby Heenan HOF Speech...What's the deal,WWE?...
Harley made a good point. Back then being world champion was more than just about having that belt. You had to be able to go out there night after night and have a great match with ANYONE. That's what being world champion is truly all about.
What a great interview, I saw them both live, Race in the 70's and Flair in the 80-90's and they both made it real. When the show was done you knew they gave it there all and wanted you to want more. And more I always wanted from them.
These guys are emotional because they gave their hearts, souls and bodies to the business. There is a mutual respect between these guys, especially the old timers. These clowns on TV have no clue about any of this
Harley freaking Race. What a tough mutha. Guys from his era don't get enough credit. Some people act like pro wrestling began in the 1980's in the WWF. Guys like Race, Funk, Brisco, Ladd, Brody, etc. don't get enough credit. Also, guys who didn't necessarily spend the majority of their careers in the WWF. These were men and helped put wrestling on the map and should get the credit they deserve.
he beat flair in 1984 during a tour of the south pacific/austrailia & new zealand...harley won it in new zealand...flair regained it in singapore (i think)...so thats how harleys an 8-time champion...
BOTH THESE MEN WHEN THEY WRESTLED WERE TOUGH AS NAILS MY RESPECT TO FLAIR AND RACE I KNOW I WAS A KID WHEN I FIRST SEEN THEM LATE 70's EARLY 80's BUT THEY ARE THE REASON I BECAME A WRESTLING FAN !
flair cries because he is happy to see his good old friend and he remembers the good old days he Spent with Harley Race BOTH THESE GUYS ARE A CLASS ACT !!!
@Konni1969 The positive thing about Ric being retired is he gets to pass on his knowledge to the younger guys. The guys he manages in TNA should feel lucky as they have the greatest wrestler alive passing on his skill to them. Plus he still is the best mic worker in the business. More charisma than 95% of the guys in wrestling.
@buddmann Bruiser Brody tried to get cute with Harley during a match in Japan and stiff him so Harley stretched him and whispered in his ear "if you wanna get real, we will get real" Brody backed off.
@RSXemperor I think Race would be one of the last people I would have gotten cute with back in that time span. When Flair went to Japan as NWA champ and the Japanese are known to doublecross the American titleholders on occasion and take their belts, Flair brought Race with him to make sure there was no funny business taking place,
I read onetime where Vince McMahon tried to off offer Harley alot of money before Starcade 83,and get him to not show up.However Harley Race is a standup guy and true profeesional and wouldn't do it.
yeah he's gonna cry, him and his people made a life long carreer outa something you werent supposed to last 10 years doing in the old days, they grew up together
Flair was always very emotional when it came to "real life" the business, and the people he shared sweat, bruises, injuries, and blood with.
Here you can see a true love for what he does, and looking at the results both men had, who else if not a man who is in love with what he does, can make a champion of that caliber?
A chap I met runs a game shop and wrestling company in England. I asked about a photo of him and Flair (recent photo mind). This fellow mentioned how Flair wrestled him at his much smaller company. But still put on an awesome show and works so well with the wrestlers. Flair is a real wrestling fan's hero.
@fmthebaron He'd probably be supplying the kleenex & offering Flair comfort. Yeah, I can see it now. Steiner putting those massive, steroid enhanced arms around Flair & holding him until he stops crying.
Ok, so that would NEVER happen.
Seriously, Ric's a passionate guy & not afraid to show emotion. Nothing wrong w/ that.
Steiner has talked himself out of a job. All those years of bashing Flair led to TNA not renewing his contract. Now Steiner's being soooo nice to Flair.
@bjohns1975 thats because Steiner is the most insincere A-hole in all of professional wrestling. His mouth and his refusal to put guys over has been his downfall. Its why he works in the WWC promotion out in PuertoRico because quite frankly no other promotion will have him.
Race's hay day was before my time but I grew up with Rick and saw Race as an aging but still great wrestler! True legends! Thanks for the decades of entertainment!
Charlotte is a great city. Ive went there to play music many times and never been disappointed. Always a wild crowd. Im going there to see ANTiSEEN and GBH end of this Month.
You can tell the passion that Flair has for the business! He has pretty much gave his whole life to it, hope he gets to stay around in TNA for another few years. Nobody cuts a promo like Ric!
You said it! I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with the guy...I mean, he sees Harley on a regular basis, so that couldn't have set him off, and he was crying literally seconds into the interview, so it's not as though he had any time to get emotional over talking about the good old days. For god's sake, man, GET A GRIP!
@garethac81 You obviously didn't hear Ric say that he doesn't get to see Harley that much. You don't know the history between people, so don't comment on what you don't understand!!
no futal minds..Race won the IWC or IWA worlds title from Dick the Bruiser I believe not long before he entered the WWE. Thats why there is a claim oh 8 instead oh 7 title reigns.
Awesome to see two legendary wrestlers i grew up watching on tv as well as reading about them in the pro wrestling magazines.....this is great....brings back alot of memories..
@speedbuggy one of the 8 reigns was originally not recognized and was only recognized many years later. It was when Race and Flair switched the belt on an overseas tour.
Yea I didn't start to like Ric till sometime after 00', matter of fact I hated him as a kid cause I was a huge Hogan fan and a buddy of mine loved Flair lol..
I never seen Sammartino wrestle... I think I was too young to see em, not to mention missing out on most of the good WCW stuff cause I didn't have cable for the most part growing up... so I was limited to WWF, and grocery store magazines that featured other promotions...
Flair was the greatest wrestler of all time and Race was second, but not by much. I saw them in their prime, they were the best ...HANDS DOWN. God bless you guys, you guys gave me memiores that will last forever.
Harley used to come to my small territory in the 70's and put up his NWA World Championship against the local champ, and it was always a big thrill to see Harley live!
i've never seen someone cry as much as flair, but i guess if i was the greatest wrestler of all time id get a little teary eyed too when i got to see one of my greatest rivals.
dude race was 1 flair was 2or 3 race passed the torch to flair and flair did all races moves knee fly knee all suplexs over top rope flip etc race 8 times when it meant something flair had title more but it was diluted flair great harley the greatesttttttttttttttttttttttt
The video at the start shows Harley wrestling the referee-turned-wrestler Danny Davis. That must have been when Harley returned to the WWF in late 1988 and became a fan favorite. I was rooting for Harley when he wrestled Haku for the crown back then.
@indianajoe219 oh no I am a loser I better go a hide under a rock someplace. Your comment has led me to believe that I am a loser. a dumb un punctually lossers oh shit a nsd now ia m am spelliong nwords wrong. What the hell did you think you where going to pull.
@sanddune He's lived the life for so long. All the guys he came into the industry with are old, physically torn apart , or dead. I truly beleive Ric cries often because he truly apreciates the career he's had and those who've helped him along the way, and the fact that after more then 30 years, he still gets to do it today.
Harley Race and Ric Flair. . . &%$* yeah! I was too young to see Race in his day, but I used to love when he was Vader's manager because I got a chance to see him wrestle on VHS and found the appreciation for who he was.
Great video. I've wondered if Ric's emotion was a put-on at times in the WWE, but you can see it is genuine right here. I think Vince just milked it a little too much. I personally think it is fantastic and really shows how much Flair cares, but there was a stretch recently where it seemed like every time he came out, they made him cry.
Anyways, a great clip and I wish I could have been at this event!
He didn't cry that often. There were a few times post match. Then the 2003 celebration is Greensborro, the Hall of Fame, Wrestlemania XXIV, and the night after on RAW.
All of them were special moments, that had to do with him getting the respect he deserved. I just think it's some people looking at it being WWE produced, and finding stuff to nitpick. I don't think Flair would cry on command.
Marraige is great, so long as you don't linger over space mountain too long.
Truth be told, Beth got selfish and obviously didnt love him as much as he thought she did, otherwise she'd have rolled her eyes at his behaviour the way she always previously did.
lots of respect for the man..i admire him only not for wrestling but for convincing wwe for still giving paychecks to hall of famers like harley race and some other wrestlers who were not as succesful but made a difference during their time..some still receive monthly checks from wwe all because of flair..thanks man..the true legend of sports entertainment.
Harley survived Polio as a youngster, Ric survived a horrific plane crash and a broken back early in his career and yet both went on to have lengendary careers that nobody has matched to this day. Amazing.
sorry for the 2x comment but in all fairness to wwf the did have the best wrestling match of all time which i seen, WM 3- steamboat/savage.. but yea to be the man you gotta beat the man. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
two guys who established and legitimized a belt (in my eyes atleast), race was the man who more than likely made flair....kinda like andre/hogan.... flair is the champ that i watched growin up and compared to hogan in the "day" was wayyyy more believable to a kid... id always mark out for the horsemen too...btw ECW ECW ECW!!!
in the 80's , what kind of fan would deny great talent from different promotions, of coarse wwf was red hot but if you didnt know these two guys you def. dont know wrestling!
I do not/ will not/ will never be a WWE fan and it was disappointing to see Flair there for the last 8 years ot whatever but the WWE did show him a ton of respect. You have to keep in mind that Flair was not a WWE creation and Vince went way out of his way to make sure that Flair was treated with respect and always included him in the show. Things were so bad for Flair in WCW and thanks to Vince Flair went out the right way.
When I was in high school this was a guy in my geometry class that was this huge wrestling fan and he didn't even know who Ric Flair was. The WWF had taken control of everything and it was as if the NWA didn't exist. I brought a wrestling magazine to school and showed him the world rankings in PWI. #1 Ric Flair. #2 Andre the Giant. #3 Rick Martel AWA world champ. #4 Hulk Hogan WWF Champion. Not only did the WWF champion come in 4th but the WWF title was not recognized by PWI as a world title!
I remember those days as well. I knew a huge wrestling fan that I went to school went myself. Of course, he knew Hulk Hogan and never heard of Ric Flair and Rick Martel and other territories. I brought him a PWI magazine in school and all he did was look at the WWF stuff. I told him to read the magazine, and it will get interesting. He did read it, and admitted there was some stuff he overlooked, but he was still pro-WWF.
damm a local tv station actually covering a wrestling convention, dont see that kinda respect given by local media, unless its maybe in philly or memphis
in fairness, alot of those companies drove themselves under, awa by 1988 had a bunch of wrestlers that no one cared for, world class, have the big stars died off, ecw ran out of money, and wcw had booked themselves into the graveyard, did vince kill off the von erichs? no, did vince tell paul heyman to bounce checks? no, did vince have nash beat goldberg and then lay down for hogan? no, so vince just had a lil better business sense
actually let me rephrase what i said before vince did not make any wrestler the wrestlers made vince by busting there ass for his amusement while he's havin "fun" with the lady wrestlers
It was an honor and a privilege to be in Charlotte last week for the NWA Fanfest...I was there Thursday night and Friday. I live in Dallas and came to only see The Four Horsemen....I was at the Q & A with Race and Flair....I have new respect for Harley Race...he truly is a man with class and is very humble. It was FANTASTIC to see them sitting together and talking about wrestling(past and present)....I still can't believe how fast time goes by...I was there just last week.....GREAT TIME!!

Flair was always very emotional when it came to "real life" the business, and the people he shared sweat, bruises, injuries, and blood with.
Here you can see a true love for what he does, and looking at the results both men had, who else if not a man who is in love with what he does, can make a champion of that caliber?
TheRealAxelFury 1 year ago
Harley Race was a tough SOB. Flair is just showing the proper respect. Race taught him a lot and was one of the guys who helped put him on the map.
danteras23 1 year ago 13
@danteras23 There are few "entertainers" that understand what they benefit from Race. Flair showed class. You are absolutely right.

I love Flair, but he cries too much. I mean he was barely on camera 5 seconds before the tears started flowing.
You know the only thing I wished I could've seen with Flair & Harley? I wish Race would have been around during the Four Horsemen days.
TrueTalkTV 1 year ago
A chap I met runs a game shop and wrestling company in England. I asked about a photo of him and Flair (recent photo mind). This fellow mentioned how Flair wrestled him at his much smaller company. But still put on an awesome show and works so well with the wrestlers. Flair is a real wrestling fan's hero.

Imagine if Scott Steiner was there with a mic seeing Flair cry.
fmthebaron 1 year ago
@fmthebaron He'd probably be supplying the kleenex & offering Flair comfort. Yeah, I can see it now. Steiner putting those massive, steroid enhanced arms around Flair & holding him until he stops crying.
Ok, so that would NEVER happen.
Seriously, Ric's a passionate guy & not afraid to show emotion. Nothing wrong w/ that.
Steiner has talked himself out of a job. All those years of bashing Flair led to TNA not renewing his contract. Now Steiner's being soooo nice to Flair.
bjohns1975 1 year ago
@bjohns1975 thats because Steiner is the most insincere A-hole in all of professional wrestling. His mouth and his refusal to put guys over has been his downfall. Its why he works in the WWC promotion out in PuertoRico because quite frankly no other promotion will have him.

stevedrums 1 year ago
@stevedrums

Yea I didn't start to like Ric till sometime after 00', matter of fact I hated him as a kid cause I was a huge Hogan fan and a buddy of mine loved Flair lol..

@sanddune He's lived the life for so long. All the guys he came into the industry with are old, physically torn apart , or dead. Harley Race and Ric Flair. . . &%$* yeah! I was too young to see Race in his day, but I used to love when he was Vader's manager because I got a chance to see him wrestle on VHS and found the appreciation for who he was.
Maybetruth 2 years ago
Great video. I've wondered if Ric's emotion was a put-on at times in the WWE, but you can see it is genuine right here. I think Vince just milked it a little too much. I personally think it is fantastic and really shows how much Flair cares, but there was a stretch recently where it seemed like every time he came out, they made him cry.
Anyways, a great clip and I wish I could have been at this event!
giantrobot9000 2 years ago
He didn't cry that often. There were a few times post match. Then the 2003 celebration is Greensborro, the Hall of Fame, Wrestlemania XXIV, and the night after on RAW.
All of them were special moments, that had to do with him getting the respect he deserved. I just think it's some people looking at it being WWE produced, and finding stuff to nitpick. I don't think Flair would cry on command.
But I agree, this video was pretty touching.

Things were so bad for Flair in WCW and thanks to Vince Flair went out the right way.
patvilhauer 2 years ago
When I was in high school this was a guy in my geometry class that was this huge wrestling fan and he didn't even know who Ric Flair was. The WWF had taken control of everything and it was as if the NWA didn't exist. I brought a wrestling magazine to school and showed him the world rankings in PWI. #1 Ric Flair. #2 Andre the Giant. #3 Rick Martel AWA world champ. #4 Hulk Hogan WWF Champion. Not only did the WWF champion come in 4th but the WWF title was not recognized by PWI as a world title!
patvilhauer 2 years ago 4
I remember those days as well. I knew a huge wrestling fan that I went to school went myself. Of course, he knew Hulk Hogan and never heard of Ric Flair and Rick Martel and other territories. I brought him a PWI magazine in school and all he did was look at the WWF stuff. I told him to read the magazine, and it will get interesting. He did read it, and admitted there was some stuff he overlooked, but he was still pro-WWF.

all vince did is make wrestling bad by buying all the wrestling companies like wcw ecw awa and all the other companies around the world
joshoct1984 2 years ago 6
in fairness, alot of those companies drove themselves under, awa by 1988 had a bunch of wrestlers that no one cared for, world class, have the big stars died off, ecw ran out of money, and wcw had booked themselves into the graveyard, did vince kill off the von erichs? no, did vince tell paul heyman to bounce checks? no, did vince have nash beat goldberg and then lay down for hogan? no, so vince just had a lil better business sense
chriskoob 2 years ago 2
actually let me rephrase what i said before vince did not make any wrestler the wrestlers made vince by busting there ass for his amusement while he's havin "fun" with the lady wrestlers
