The only good thing about Apple is the Mac OS - with their proprietary developed drivers and entire system fine tuned it is runing very fast. But in exchange for that you pay for updates, you pay for the hardware that much more money and even the hardware is not so reliable as it used to be.- tons of stories to tell. I had a iPhone in the past and synchronizing with iTunes drove me nuts all the time. When it comes to linux i kind of like the Suse as well. But Ubuntu might not be that bad either.

I've used Arch Linux since 2004, I think you would like it since you're in to tinkering with stuff.

Come to the dark side, get an Intel system ;-) I have a Core 2 Quad, thinking of upgrading when the Ivy Bridge processors come out later this year, since my motherboard is having problems with USB (sometimes not detecting keyboard on boot, not detecting SD cards after a few inserts/removes).
