@njkm213 You shouldn't "block", period. Static blocking is inferior, and only reasonable with stick-fighting. What you want is a ward/deflection/displacement instead.
Like most people who train solely with wood/plastic weapons, They don't seem to care about their "edges."
Most unfortunate, considering how nihonto have slightly more fragile edges than swords of most any other culture. The point of training is to ingrain/refine proper habits and actions. If you train incorrectly from the start...
Also, I highly doubt that the koryu would've used much, if any "parry-riposte" actions. Another distinct stick-fighting tendency.
@HipposHateWater i prefer chinese jian or a good hand and a half broad sword (or 2 european short swords) for the reason that even if my edge is damaged its much easier to repair then a katana and that my edge tho softer is less likely to chip
the tall guy in the hakama and the "sensei" have some knowledge of swords-maybe aikidoka playing with a new toy.The other guy doesn't move like he's even done a martial art of any sort and the strikes would never have landed even if the uke never moved.Way to much emphasis in "blocking" instead of "parrying"
@Dragonforcelover19 Well, congrats! It is up to you...treat it as something you got out of a store or as a weapon that could save your life.On April 13, 1612, Musashi (about age 30) fought his duel with Sasaki Kojirō, who was known as "The Demon of the Western Provinces" and who wielded a nodachi. Musashi came late and unkempt to the appointed place — the island of Funajima, in the Kanmon Straits separating Honshū and Kyūshū.
@Dragonforcelover19 The duel was short. Musashi killed his opponent with a bokken that Legend says he had carved from an oar used on the boat that carried him to the island
The greatest Samurai that is the template of Japanese business, won not by using a sophisticated device, but a simple wood stick; congrats on your bokken, treat it with respect as you would your own blood, his ultimate writing: The Go Rin No Sho / The Book of Five Rings.
@daremoagain69squared as far as i know Musashi Miyamoto used an oar to defeat Kojiro Sasaki, who wielded a huge nodachi! mmmh, what if King Arthur killed Mordred using a frying pan?
@GetitUnderCool FRYING PAN! you say fryiing pan!!! who knew, right!? a great weapon... how many husbands were kept straight by the frying pan weilding wife!!!! no joke! also, let us not forget sean connery and his 'thumb!' frying pans, the thumb and the pen, impliments of great power. all kidding aside, it is 'a' truth. remember most martial art weapons were farmers implements of need to feed their families and used to fight the enemy.
@GetitUnderCool Be mindful to be Mushin (of no mind) and be very aware of being selfless! for those who get the irony, read 'zen in the martial arts' by joe hyams. please trust me, to anyone who wishes to better themselves, this is an amazingly easy read from a man living in the time of bruce lee era, and he relates amazing martial art lessons in small 1,2 page life experiences learned from masters that can be embraced by the even most beginer student. gotobook store, preview it, benifit.
@doughnutugy1 Ha, thxs, yeah I had that figured, but are they blockling flat of blade to edge? B/C edge to edge makes a big chip. Wat does " O.o" mean?
one of the most important things, i feel during training that I learned from some of my Private instructors, was that I should NEVER make a strike, that wasnt going to hit my opponent anyway. in this vid, I see training, and I admire that. I would like to put in that all strikes should be "intended" to strike their opponent, and not the sword their opponent is wielding, which would give that opponent something to actually "realistically" deflect. Just sharing what was taught to me. *bows*
The sword should never be lower than the bottom of the chest, because going any lower risks a loss of control. Also many times idiots going lower than the chest have cut their knees and even foot
Well, thank you, sincerely for the reply. Contest in observations and making conversations is excellent training.
Sword work is about perfection for a reason. Although we, the masses, have been saturated with movie realities about how fights 'go down', a sword fight/fist fight amongst experienced begins and ends in 20 to 30 seconds.
Fact is, when observing this video, the bodies of the demonstrators did NOT move with the dexterity of an experienced Artist of.....
@daremoagain69squared dexterity of an experienced Artist of the Martial Way; not to be confused with people who take classes in the martial arts or who 'take karate!' The very movements of these 'black belts' were pathetic and awkward and stunningly short of the respect of swordsmanship...
swordsmanship... not the cocky uptight rules of British fencing, but the deep respect of the lifestyle of the samurai, whose swords your bokkens are to represent, which is to be a limb or extension of the practioners very soul!
you said 'it is all about timing and being able to move with a partner'... well, then take up badmitten or the tango! This drill, which you see no downside to, is
downside to, is perfectly fine for white belts who haven't the slighest rudimentary skills to understand what they are doing or what is missing in the training, but even the syllogism, the 'basic logic model' of this drill does not instill the magnitude of importance of engaging this activity with this type of weapon: someone will die, ignorance will kill you, the lesson of 21 feet, HONOR, DISCIPLINE, RESPECT, PROPER ETTIQUETTE and on and on i can recite passages of the fallicies of this video.
This video lacks any reference to the Arts of the Martial Way, the black belts are clearly deficient in rudimentary skills as evidenced by the movements of their very feet! In watching their bodies I was reminded of my 3 year old imitating a dance he saw on Nick Jr channel. I am not trying to be insulting deliberatly, but for the sake of the integrity of the Martial Arts, i'm not going to coddle anyone.
This video CLEARLY demonstrates the lack of one of the basic lessons of defense and offense. By your instruction, when your 'students' perform, their weapons are attacking weapons. This is a huge faux-pas in training. The repetitive sequence in the video shows these 'black belts' striking each others swords! Are you not familiar with the famous quote
"It is the finest blades that are easily blunted!" ? When you block, you are blocking an attack in which you immediately follow with an ending strike; the strike that fills the cavity, the open space, that is a product of any initial attack, and should kill your attacker. There are no fantastic battles like the movies except as demonstrated by Matt Damon;
quick, sudden and finished. Your video shows wooden swords clanging together, nothing more relevant than a volley at a ping pong table and about equally as instructive. Honestly, I am very sorry to say, but it is for your benefit, this is elementary thinking, process, and kata, hyung or forms.
I have no malice, my friend, except for the one frightening thing that I detest ... 'ignorance' that lulls us into false confidence which incites those to fear and disrupt society; F.E.A.R. False Evidence that Appears Real.
I disagree with you, but i am not sorry to have this wonderful opportunity to engage in this difference. I will welcome your counter thoughts (more hopefully 'mutual aggreements' or 'agree to disagree') and I
will never see your thoughts as an enemy; rather i will see your thoughts as an education. I spoke frankly. Do we have time for anything else? You are an explorer studying in the same arena as I. If, on my voyage, you and I beneifit each other and learn to benefit the youth of tomorrow, then we win, my friend. Debate, technique and policies/rules comes thru experimentation and validation. I wish you the best!

Erm why is there a clash? no need for it apart from being showy and making *bang* noises ... and the black belt guy almost falls over when he completes his strike. kinda funny all round really :(
it looks as if they're attacking each other's bokken instead of actually trying to hit... silly me it's probably because they get outta the way just before the strike would land on them... hmmmm, noooooo, they're not... they really are attacking each other's bokken
I was thinking the same thing, they should learn to control their attack so that they can actualy go for the opponents body and not risk doing too much damage if the opponent doesn't move or block. Atleast that way they will learn to block instead of thinking "Oh well it's just going to miss any way"
lol, which is exactly why sword based martial arts are flawed. i might post a video of me and a friend doing it samurai style. the way it was supposed to be done. aim for the body, not the sword, and evade instead of blocking (to some degree), and to use all of the bodys weapons, not just the sword.
well sword based martial artists are flawed, not the art, because they practice the wrong way. pretty much everything on the internet about martial arts is absolute crap, which is why more and more i've been trying to stop watching stuff like this on youtube and the like

it's kinda funny to know that a friend and me learned this on our own, without any instruction. I do hope this guys will practice at an higher pace, 'cause in a fight they'll need it.
If they would slow wayyyy down, they could get the proper maii and then later work up to doing this exercise with speed.
A common problem in most martial arts is that the sensei doesn't teach it slowly and the student never really gets the right "muscle memory" to do a technique at speed correctly. Practice doesn't make perfect - perfect practice makes perfect.
There's no reason to block most of these strikes, most would miss the target from being too short or too far off center, as they evidently do several times in this video. If you want to teach blocking/deflecting the attack should land on target, otherwise the technique is pointless.
@dalaeck It seems to me that they are on target, hence them constantly moving out of the way. They move to the right, and use their "weapon" to deflect to the left. Hence it being a block. It just looks off target because they are doing it so slowly, because they are learning.
@Foxbodyfan50 this is not blocking,a block stops dead. This is called a parry, more finesse and brains required and horrific spead for the counter attack if done correct

For beginner and intermediates, if you are struck by a senior, then the senior should restrain his expertise in order for the less experienced have room to learn. However, when one becomes a candidate for a black belt, then it is his own fault for not knowing better. he is responsible for his actions or lack thereof.
