A 4 (or 5) star General never "retires". Eisenhower had to resign his commission in order to run for President in 1952. One of the first things John Kennedy did as President was to order that Eisenhower's rank and commission be restored. He died a 5 star General.

Of American presidents, Washington, Jackson, Grant and Eisenhowser were always referred to as "General" rather than "President" after their retirement.
