Lemieux would have beat Gretzky's 51 game point streak but had to stop at 46 due to back pain. Mario was awesome, I cant wait to see the alumni game on the 31st that will be something special.

@mothercanuckers he is good!! i would have to consider Lidstrom ahead of him tho and Niedermayer is a close 2nd.. he's done more with his career then Bourque.. took him the last year to win a cup! he never really led a team to victory! i know its hard for a dman to do that but...

@RAM9119 in that era from about 1986 up to 1996 I think Ray Bourque was unquestionably the best dman in the league he led Boston to 2 cup finals although they did lose he was the man who was carrying the team no 1 man can win a cup by himself it never happened before and it never will Gretzky didn't win on his own neither did Messier, Lemieux, or Yzerman.

@mothercanuckers brian leetch, chris chelios, rob blake and ray bourque i think are all in same league! in their prime that is.. chelios wasnt that great near the end of his career lol... al macinnis as well... i unno, lots of good dman in the 80's 90's..

@RAM9119 I agree that those guys had years where they really shined but I think over the entire period playing 2-ways that Bourque was the best Leetch had offense and Chelios and Blake were real physical presences but I always put Bourque on a pedestal above those guys he could do it all and do it all well consistently.

@Blackhawksfan1993 LOL i was born in 93 too... never got to see bure and i can agree that ovie is the best pure scorer along with heatley that ive ever seen. but what else does ovie do? score goals and thats it. if he hits a cold streak hes fucking useless.. crosby can play defense, play on the pk and all that stuff when hes cold. better all around player=better player. goal scoring isnt all, little things in hockey matter the most.

@Blackhawksfan1993 Mario Lemieux was better than Gretzky (maybe not 10 times better...), but Gretzky was fortunate to not incur any long-term injuries, while Lemieux wasn't so lucky, and it hampered his still impressive career.

@Blackhawksfan1993 maybe not ten times better, but i agree, gretzky did play on some stacked teams. messier, kurri, not to mention once he left those stacked oilers teams he never won a cup again. messier did. but anyways lemieux skill wise and leadership wise i think may be better than gretzky. if not for all the injuries, 66 may well be the number retired from the entire league.

I heard from somewhere that he scored on his first shift (in this shift, shown here in this clip on Youtube), but, I didn't realize that he also scored on his first shot attempt on net in the NHL (and, in having done so, subsequently thereafter, became that NHL season's leading scorer at that point in time).

Awesome,,probably number 1 or 2 all time. He never had decades of all stars & goal tending throughout his career. He did have lymphoma, significant spinal stenosis on multi-levels , & radiation treatment. Managed to win a few cups & financially save a franchise by staying committed to a city & organization that could not compensate him. 66 Forever

now gretzky can u see him getting one good clean/dirty hit, picture the hits on toews and savard. ones dirty ones clean (hes not gettin up like toews, hes dead if he got hit as hard as savard(jus kiddin) i dont see anyone that skinny playing in todays nhl but i think he would avg. 2.30 ppg on a healthy season maybe 75pts a season give or take a few. they were both good once upon a time we can agree on that

ok lets all wonder how gretzky and mario would do in todays nhl..........lets think.....ok mario was great but i see him getting hurt in todays nhl maybe a concussion or knee etc he was a pretty big guy but lost fights (lol) maybe avg. 2.24. ppg give or take a few, everybody gets hurt and maybe still get 70 pts a season(maybe)

Without Gretzky, the Oilers would have still won their cups. Without Lemieux, there wouldn't even be pro hockey in Pittsburgh let alone stanley cups!!!! Its not all about numbers when comparing the two. All I can say is Gretzky had Messier, Kurri, Anderson, Coffey and a lot of other talented teammates EARLY in his career. Who did Lemieux have?

None of the players you named were in the NHL (except Messier) when Gretzky came into the league and won his 1st MVP and tied for the lead in scoring. None of the players you named got more than 75 pts on Gretzky's second season when he broke the assists and points records (109 assists, 164 pts) while winning the scoring race by 29 pts and earning the MVP again.
Mario debuted his career playing with a guy that scored 51 goals the year before, Gretzky didn't have that chance.

@Irato99 As i stated, Gretzky had a lot of help from future hall of famers EARLY in his career, as in his first five or six seasons! In response to the 51 goal scorer Mike Bullard the season before Lemieux arrived, I never noticed his name on a hall of fame ballot! Most people can't even name another player on the roster until Coffey and Barrasso arrived in 87-88(Lemieux's fourth season) and 88-89 respectively!!!
