To me, the SLR has the best sound of any supercar. V8s tend to sound better than high strung 10s or screaming 12s. They're more gutteral and menacing. The SLR may not be the best performer, but it's got style and sound.

I'd like to see this compared to the LF-A. They are both expensive, exclusive, hypercars from luxury car companies. The SLR makes a sinful V8 bellow, while the LF-A makes a spine-chilling V10 shriek. I would expect the LF-A to be faster because thanks to its lower curb weight. I've driven the SLR at high speeds, and found that it lacked front-end grip and was very squirrelly, but I want to give the Lexus a go.

The bad thincarg about Fifth Gear is that in all supercars they look for the same thing. The thing that the McLaren F1 has..though not all supercars are about the best Nurburing lap times.

The SLR as Clarkson said was built so you can go to the ring,do a very fast lap,and then drive it home..it is more of a really really fast GT car.

Tiff putting the SLR past the point of traction is the best way to learn about all the dynamics of the car easily. Suspension, power delivery, chassis, steering all need to be VERY well set up to make a car drift well right out of the factory. Often too, manufacturers set their cars to be comfy and to handle well should you need to do some emergency maneuvers, but take it to 100% and then flaws become apparent.

i hear you but i think the slr is more of a long distance cruiser. i dont think they really can build a great car because if you think they don't have a car out that's best in class. however, you are very very wrong when you say that the vette is only for straight lines. it's really good around corners, and the steering is precise and communicative around a track. even clarkson who hates all american cars and destroyed a c4 corvette said that the current corvette is pretty good.
