I feel the need to warn anyone really interested in Russian history to avoid watching this program. Although i sympathize with this attempt to bring rich Russian history closer to a western viewer, this program is full of inaccuracies and crude simplifications. I could think of ten ways that would introduce Russia and its monuments far better in 50min. then what is shown here.

Nonetheless i thank the poster for his effort.

@ulongkoror they were part of the mongols, the western part of their empire. People in Eastern Europe called them tattars not mongols. It has more to do with tradition. The byzantines for example called themselves roman but history remembers them as byzantines because historians preferred that name.

Tatars and Mongols. This is the reason we call it tatar-mongol yoke. Originally tatars were a smal tribe that fell under the rule of mongols. However, later the name was given to all nomadic people east of Russia (similarly all people from USSR were called Russians).
