in the 1979 afc championship if the mike renfro catch was called for a touchdown the oilers could of gone to the superbowl and won. the oilers would of never went to tennessee
@FlauntyHawk- They weren't kicked out. Their greedy owner Bud "I'm a totally heartless asshole" Adams decided to MOVE the team to Nashville, after attemtping to move them two other times while sucking the life and money out the fans that supported him.
I am going to keep going to church so when I die I can be in heaven with the toughest football player to ever live. George never lost a fight on the field in the NFL or the AFL. Bob Talimene once said George was the toughest guy on the Oilers. And now I say he is the toughest guy in heaven.
Been working on an autographed Oilers helmet for awhile..George Blanda, Charlie Hennigan, Earl Cambell, Bum Phillips, Ken Houston, Curly Culp, George Webster, Elvin Beathea, Dave Casper, Mike Rozier, Billy Cannon, Hoyle Granger, Ken Burroughs, Warren Moon, Charlie Joiner, Pete Beathard and Dan Pastorini. Hope to have it posted later on.
No way would the Eagles have clobbered the 1960 Oilers. The Oilers would have surprised them with all the passing and the Eagles who werent that good of a team would have been overwhelmed.
@superman93994 Oilers pass defense would havd been shot full of holes by Van Brocklin. Tommy McDonald was unstopable at that point of his career. You under estimate the Eagles pass defense. Eagles easy.
The only bad thing I can say was the Astrodome was the first place that took weather out of the game and Astroturf curtailed the number of classic mudbaths I used to love like the '65 NFL title game or the Lions Thanksgiving games in 1968 and 1969 against the Eagles and Vikings respectively.
as an eagles fan, i must say that if the oilers and the eagles met to decide the championship in 1960, it wouldve been a very exciting game to watch. a very explosive offensive shootout featuring qb's george blanda and norm van brocklin, oiler receivers bill groman and charley hennigan and eagle receivers tommy mcdonald and pete retzlaff. not to mention, some big plays by the defenses. point being everybody who watched this game would witness a very significant show.
@psufan001 A close look at the facts suggests that any "Pre-Super Bowl" would have been won the NFL team, probably easily. These teams were all starting from scratch. The Cowboys went winless in their first year and didn't make the playoffs until their 7th season. The Vikings didn't until season #8. The Packers won the first two Super Bowls by 68-24. The rosters of the AFL teams had a huge turnover in the late 60's as the league geared up to compete with the NFL.. They were finally ready in '68.
@WWETNAwrestlingfan15 Bednarik might've gotten loarded for the game. He was a big bag of wind and still is. He puts down Sanders? lol The Eagles!? LOSERS! 36 games below .500 in your history?
In 1962, the Oilers were the first AFL team to sign an active NFL player away from the other league, when wide receiver Willard Dewveall left the Bears to join the champion Oilers. Dewveall that year caught the longest pass reception for a touchdown in professional football history, 99 yards (91 m), from Jacky Lee, against the San Diego Chargers
fantastic tribute...sure could have used a lot better song (something from back in that era, maybe), but the pics override it....and, I just muted the sound.
0:24 - 1962 AFL Championship double overtime Dallas Texans @ Houston Oilers Texans 20, Oilers 17. Three teams in Texas from 1960-1962. Cowboys, Oilers, and Texans. Don't forget about the 1952 Dallas Texans who went 1-11-0. Their only win came against the Chicago Bears who played their 2nd string on Thanksgiving in Akron, OH 27-23
Great tribute, thanks. My dad took me to Oiler games after we moved to the Houston area in 1964.
Charley Tolar, Ode Burrell, Don Trull, Scott Appleton Glen Ray Hines, Hoyle Granger, Charley Hennigan, Fred Willis, Earl Campbell, Kenny Houston ... damn I miss the Oilers.
@Stronghurst I miss the Oilers too. I'm fortunate to have an autographed photo of the late Charlie Tolar, along with four of his football cards, all mounted in a frame on my office wall. There's also a FaceBook page dedicated to him - we need more than five people to "like" it though.
In later years, George Blanda would remain a strong supporter of AFL heritage, saying: "That first year, the Houston Oilers or Los Angeles Chargers (24-16 losers to the Oilers in the title game) could have beaten the NFL champion (Philadelphia) in a Super Bowl." Blanda said further: "I think the AFL was capable of beating the NFL in a Super Bowl game as far back as 1960 or '61. I just regret we didn't get the chance to prove it."
Love George and love the old AFL but the results of the first two SB's indincate that no early AFL team could have beaten an NFL title team. If you look at the rosters from 1966 to 1969, there was a total change. Everyone in the AFL was upgrading. It was like the coming of sound in Hollywood. Very few survived.
NFL did the same thing too except for the Eagles. NFL started to draft players from black colleges which they didnt' do at the beginning of the 60's. Charlie Hennigan could have kicked any DB's butt. Matter of fact Willie Brown was on the Oilers but was cut because he couldn't stop him.
i dont quite think so. i think it would have been a bear scare with the final being:
chicago bears 17
san diego 14
but this scare would hav sent shock waves thru the established nfl and made them wake upo and smell the coffee. pete rozelle wanted no part of such a game back then thinking it could only tarnish the nfl's rock solid superior reputation. but taht san diego team starrign lance alworth was truly an offensive machine. i just dont hink geo halas would have let his team lose.
@09rockmusic To be fair, please note my bias as a Packers fan as I give my opinion. The NFL and AFL were equally good leagues. The Lombardi Packers were equally better than all the teams in both leagues, as was proven in the first two Super Bowls. They would have similarly CRUSHED the '61 Oilers, '62 Texans and '65 Bills.
@09rockmusic I agree with that the AFL could have won the Super Bowl in 1960, but that Lombardi Packer team of 1961 could only be beaten with a shotgun.
oops i mean 1963
