Actually, Peter was crucified upside down in Rome. His remains are still buried in Rome. Peter was encouraged by Emperor Constantine to make his "headquarters" in Rome as Rome at that time was the centre of power in the world. As for Peter being married, he and the rest of The Apostles basically dropped everything and devoted their lives to Christ and His teachings.
